Symptoms

When you open a saved Microsoft Visio drawing, you receive one of the following error messages:

An error (100) occurred during the action Open Saved File.

Visio cannot open the file because it’s not a Visio file or it has been corrupted.

To determine the unique number that is associated with the message that you receive, press CTRL+SHIFT+I. The following number appears in the lower-right corner of this message:

An error (100) occurred during the action Open Saved File.

Visio cannot open the file because it’s not a Visio file or it has been corrupted.

Error message 2

Visio cannot open the file because it’s not a Visio file or it has become corrupted.

Note In this error message, File name is the name of the file.

Cause

If this problem occurs only with a single drawing or a small group of similar diagrams, your drawing or diagrams probably are damaged.

Resolution

The information and shapes in a damaged or corrupted drawing can seldom be recovered.

The best way to protect yourself against the data loss that results from a damaged drawing is to keep backup copies of your diagrams. As an alternate to keeping a separate backup copy, you can work with a copy of the Visio drawing instead of the original. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Open.

  2. In the Open dialog box, select a drawing, click the arrow on the Open button, and then click Copy.

    Note In Visio 2007, click the arrow on the Open button, and then click Open as Copy.

  • Running under WIN7-64 bit with Office 2013.  Requests reinstall every time it is run. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No change. Office 2013 does not recognize that Visio 2007 is installed. Copy paste operations between Visio and Word 2013 don’t
    work. Tried disabling sharepoint access for Visio 2007 and did a repair for Office 2013. No change.Tried various compatibility modes. No change. Ran Microsoft troubleshooter which verified there is a compatibility issue but provided no solution.

    Tried the following…

    Type the following command, and then press Enter:
    reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Visio\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

    no change

    «Update for Microsoft Office 2007 suites»
    Windows Update -> Installed Updates -> Select this item -> Uninstall.

    For me, this magically fixed the problem with Visio 2007 and Visio 2013 install on the same machine (and Visio 2007 crashing or constantly reinstalling).

  • Hi all,

    when am trying to copy some text from visio file, following error message occuring.

    can anybody help in this.

    Visio internal error # -1

    Action 1021: copy

    First try closing and reopening the file. next try restarting visio.

    This kind of error is generally seen when a file has some corruption, possibly very minor — meaning that you can still open and print, for instance, but some action, like copying
    shapes, causes an error.

    If you have one or two files that seem to see this problem, try cleaning them up (after making backup copies) using suggestions from this article:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826418

    Specifically, try the «Methods to try if you can open the drawing» section:

    Method 1: Save the file as an XML drawing

    Save the drawing as an XML drawing (.vdx file), and then save the XML drawing as a drawing (.vsd file). To do this:

    1. Start Visio, and then open your drawing.
    2. On the
      File menu, click Save As.
    3. In the
      Save As dialog box, click XML Drawing (*.vdx)in theSave as type box, and then type a file name in theFile name box. Specify a location where you want to save the drawing file, and then clickSave.
    4. Close all the drawings that are currently open.
    5. On the
      File menu, click Open.
    6. Locate the XML drawing (.vdx) that you saved earlier in step 3, and then clickOpen.
    7. On the
      File menu, click Save As.
    8. In the
      Save As dialog box, click Drawing (*.vsd) in the
      Save as type box, and then type a file name in the File name box. Specify a location where you want to save the drawing file, and then clickSave.
    9. Close the drawing.
    10. On the
      File menu, click Open
    11. Locate the drawing (.vsd file) that you saved earlier in step 8, and then clickOpen.

    There are other options in that section, but this one is the most effective.

    If the above method cannot solve the issue, then try to upgrade to Visio 2010 to check the issue.

  • The exact error I am getting is:

    «An error (126) occurred during th eaction Save As.

    Visio cannot save the file you selected.»

    whenever a user tries to do a «Save As» of a file into a network directory. They can do a save as if it’s on their own computer, then move the file to the correct network location, but this can be an annoyance if you are working with many Visio files.

    I’ve checked the permissions on the folders, ran the program as an Administrator, turned off my firewall and anti-virus program, but nothing seems to work. I have also found no information on error 126.

    I noticed that there is a fix on Experts-Exchange, but I don’t have a subscription.

  • Excluded vsd files on the server in Etrust.

    Go under:

    Client

    Policies

    Realtime, eTrust Antivirus

    Selection

    Regular Files, All Except the Specified Extensions (in the drop down box)

    Edit list

    type in vsd in the «Enter a new file extension» box

    click ok

    apply

    Seemed to work.
