Problem installing Extension Pack
Virtual Box installed on my Dell laptop running Win 8.1
But right at the start of installing the extension pack I get:
Failed to install the Extension Pack C:/Users/howarddy/Downloads/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.30-101610.vbox-extpack.
Failed to load the main module (‘C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox/ExtensionPacks/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack/win.amd64/VBoxPuelMain.DLL’): VERR_SYMBOL_NOT_FOUND — GetLastError=127.
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: ExtPackManagerWrap
Interface: IExtPackManager {edba9d10-45d8-b440-1712-46ac0c9bc4c5}
IS the extension pack 64-bit, or do I have another problem??

Ext pack are both 32 and 64 bits. Have you tried to install the one matching your VirtualBox version?

This happened to me when I tried to install the Extension Pack with version mismatch.
The Extension Pack was meant for VirtualBox 6, but the one I had in the machine was VirtualBox 5.
After I installed VirtualBox 6, the ExtensionPack could be installed successfully.

That is not valid. The extension pack is a plugin for a specific version of VirtualBox. By definition the versions must match.
I’m going to lock this topic: the vague title IMHO invites «me too» posts.
I have Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1.38 installed for long time:
$ apt-cache policy virtualbox-5.1
virtualbox-5.1:
Installed: 5.1.38-122592~Ubuntu~xenial
Candidate: 5.1.38-122592~Ubuntu~xenial
Version table:
*** 5.1.38-122592~Ubuntu~xenial 500
500 http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial/contrib amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
I have not ran kernel updates, or something DKMS-related today.
The problem started with «Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found!» as in this Q&A.
So I downloaded corresponding version of Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack and tried to install it by clicking on the file in ~/Downloads
folder.
Then VirtualBox opened, suggested me to install extpack:
I clicked Install and accepted license.
Then the following error window was shown:
The installer failed with exit code 127: Error creating textual authentication agent: Error opening current controlling terminal for the process (`/dev/tty’): No such device or address.
Same with console way of installation:
$ VBoxManage extpack install ~/Downloads/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.1.38.vbox-extpack

What to do with this?
I purchased a network card to give a separate network to my virtual machine. My host OS is Ubuntu 14.04 . Also i need to mount the USB to my virtual machine and not my host OS, so i downloaded extension pack version 5.0.2 for Vbox-5.0 . While installing virtual box extension pack, there were two VM’s running and i got this popup.
Failed to install the Extension Pack /home/aniket/Downloads/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.0.20-106931.vbox-extpack.
Failed to load the main module ('/usr/lib/virtualbox/ExtensionPacks/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack/linux.amd64/VBoxPuelMain.so'): VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND - /usr/lib/virtualbox/ExtensionPacks/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack/linux.amd64/VBoxPuelMain.so: undefined symbol: RTLogRelGetDefaultInstanceEx.

Interface: IExtPackManager {3295e6ce-b051-47b2-9514-2c588bfe7554}
Even after power off of VM’s and restarting the host OS, I get this similar error code.
Sorry if you think the question is not formatted properly or any other issue with my question. This is my second post, please tell me if there are any things i need to correct in my question.
Thanks in Advance.

After lot of test and trial, the solution I found that the extension pack was not compatible and hence I had to download the compatible version of the virtualbox I am running on.
What happened was this, I was running virtualbox-5.0 and the version I was trying to install was 5.0.20 .
You can check your version by clicking on Help
and then About Virtualbox
and download the exact compatible extension pack, else it will through the same hex error code 0x80004005
which means file not found
.

Run vboxmanage command with sudo, i.e.:
sudo vboxmanage extpack install Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.1.22-115126.vbox-extpack --replace

I encounter this problem again, but this time I disable my antivirus software(mcafee), that is ok. refer by https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/7972

How to fix the VirtualBox USB enumeration error and extension pack installation
Jack Wallen experienced several errors upon installing VirtualBox 7.0 and he has the fixes for them.
Recently, I upgraded to VirtualBox 7.0, and it’s been a stellar release for the virtual machine management tool. While some VirtualBox upgrade experiences were less than ideal, the march from 6.x to 7.x was, for the most part, pretty painless. However, there are two issues you will probably encounter, both of which require different fixes.
SEE: 40+ open source and Linux terms you need to know (TechRepublic Premium)
What happened with the upgrade? Well, to begin with, because VirtualBox 7.0 isn’t in the default repositories for most Linux distributions, the process of getting the latest iteration up and running requires you to first remove the old version and then install the version.
This caused two problems, the first of which was that my user was no longer a member of the vboxusers groups. The second of which the extension pack was removed. Now, you might think that the latter problem is just a matter of going into the VirtualBox Settings window, opening the Extensions tab and adding it. Well, VirtualBox 7.0 removed the Extensions tab, so there’s no way of doing the installation from within the app.
Let’s fix both of those problems.
What you’ll need to fix the VirtualBox 7.0 problems
The only things you need to fix these problems are a running instance of VirtualBox 7.0 and a user with sudo privileges. If you haven’t already installed VirtualBox 7.0, you can find out how in my article titled How to install VirtualBox 7.0 on Ubuntu-based Linux distributions.
That’s all you need. Let’s get to the fixes.
How to fix the USB enumeration error
This fix will probably solve a lot of the problems you might have with VirtualBox 7.0. For your user to do a number of things with VirtualBox, it must be a member of the vboxusers group. Unfortunately, the installation of VirtualBox 7.0 doesn’t add your user to that group, so you have to do it manually.
Fortunately, this is simple. Open a terminal window and issue the command:
sudo usermod -aG vboxusers $USER
Log out of the desktop and log back in. Start VirtualBox 7.0, and you should see those errors have vanished. Huzzah.
How to install the extension pack for VirtualBox 7.0
To fix this issue, you must first download the extension pack. There is only one file for this and it works for all platforms.
Once the file has been downloaded, open your file manager and double-click on the file that should be named something like Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-7.0.0.vbox-extpack. When you double-click that file, VirtualBox 7.0 will automatically open and install the extension pack for you.
At this point, VirtualBox should behave exactly as expected. You’ll not see any errors and can enjoy the benefits of having the extension pack installed, such as support for physical USB devices in your virtual environments, host webcam support, connecting to a remote VM through the VirtualBox interface and more.
Enjoy that error-free VirtualBox experience.

Problem installing Virtualbox Extension Pack in 18.04
I installed Virtualbox with synaptic. Then I tried to install virtualbox-ext-pack and got the error:
Code:
E: virtualbox-ext-pack: installed virtualbox-ext-pack package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1
The «Details panel» of the attempted installation said:

Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Re: Problem installing Virtualbox Extension Pack in 18.04
I suggest using the version of VirtualBox distributed from the Oracle repositories. You can add that version to your sources list, and VB will update the same way everything else on your system does.
See the instructions at: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linu…xdistributions
I never have problems with version incompatibilities using Oracle’s repository.

Thanks, alboc, your method worked perfectly.

Re: Problem installing Virtualbox Extension Pack in 18.04
When I was documenting the latest developer release of 18.04 last week, I found that installing dkms, rebooting and then installing the guest extensions directly from the CD worked for me.
I documented the steps I took here: Installing Ubuntu Server — Software Configurations

In this instance I am still getting the same error with the package from the oracle repos when trying to install on 18.04

Are you using VirtualBox 5.2.8 and did you install the version that came with it?

The current version of VirtualBox 5.2 for 18.04 in the Oracle repo is 5.2.10-122088~Ubuntu~bionic.
Code:
$ dpkg -s virtualbox-5.2 Package: virtualbox-5.2 Status: install ok installed Priority: optional Section: contrib/misc Installed-Size: 162658 Maintainer: Oracle Corporation <info@virtualbox.org> Architecture: amd64 Version: 5.2.10-122088~Ubuntu~bionic
I recall having an architecture problem when I first started using the repo for 18.04. I solved it by editing /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list to read
Code:
deb [arch=amd64] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bionic contrib
adding the «[arch=amd64]» parameter then running «sudo apt update» and «sudo apt install virtualbox-5.2».
