Hey guys i just bought the game and really wanted to play it but when i try to run it there’s a VFS Error Message and the launcher closes. Can anybody help me? Restartet the pc, verfied my game folder, updated my grafic drivers and startet the game as an admin still doesnt work.

I am not realy shure how i solved this problem but i think the first step was verifying the game data of the game(go to your steam libary-> right click on attila—> go to properties—> local files—> verify game data)

the next step is to deinstall all the mods and verify again. if this is still not working you could try to run the game as admin(rightclick on the game launcher—> start as admin)

and if this is still not working just reinstall the game and hope for your best.

Sry if this doesnt work. it was a long time ago when i had this problem and i solved it somehow(cant remember how but i think the things i wrote above could be a start)

So I went to try and play Attila for the first time since AoC came out today and I keep getting this: «VFS Error: could not load the mods. It looks like the mods you have in your data directory don . play well together. Consider withdrawing them and reintroducing them one by one to see what the offending combination is. Don . forget to share your findings on the forum!»

The thing is I always get this message, even if I don’t have any mods selected or even installed. I made sure that I was unsubscribed to them on my profile in steam and the «modification.ini» has nothing in it. What do I do?

FYI I’m reinstalling for the 3rd time right now, give me a few minutes and I’ll try it and post the mdmp if it crashes again. I’d deleted the whole directory before I thought about the crash files.

Is the dxdiag needed or just the mdmp?

Yep crashed like a MF.

Manually deleted entire Attila folder and the appcache folder, fresh instal, again, no mods.

I was just playing this game fine (and have been for months) prior to the last update, what did you do?

When I launch Attila I deactivated all my mods and I verified the integrity of my Attila files yet still same message:
«VFS Error: could not load the mods

It looks like the mods you have in your data directory don’t play well together. Consider withdrawing them and reintroducing them one by one to see what the offending combination is. Don’t forget to share your findings on the forum!»

Fred, are your mods older than the new-ish (new to me ) launcher?
it supports load order ( a plus ) but borked sme of the older mods ( a minus )-
not all the modders went back and repackaged their 4-5 year old mods ( understandably )-
some still work. that’s my experience, anyway having just reinstalled this from — whenever.

‘VFS error: Could not load the mods’ — I’m not running mods and have reinstalled twice

I’ve been playing since MTW1 and have been modding since Empire FYI. I’ve never seen this before.

Just prior to the latest patch I was 150 turns into a AoC campaign running only the 3 Radious mods for AoC. I started getting this error when the game would crash the second I clicked play.

I deselected the mods, still the error.

I deleted the mods from data folder, still.

I deleted the data folder, reacquired, tried to start with no mods subscribed or in data folder, still.

I deleted the entire Attila directory and the appcache folder, reinstalled, still.

What I have read using Google Search if verifying the games Cache doesnt fix it is this —
«That was the problem. The preferences.script was still reading a mod even if I didn’t have it activated. Thanks!»

So if unsubscribing from all your Mods doesn’t help i I would delete the Attila Data folder and verify the games cache again. How to Info in List below —

List of things that I know have worked for me in the past. —
Run Windows Upate Utility to make sure Windows is up to date — Also Make sure video drivers are updated.

First option is to Verify game Cache.
Next if that didn’t help.
Did you try any of these —- Delete the hidden Attila %AppData% Folder below. — Then verify Game Cache.
It’s a hidden folder.

If none of the above steps don’t work the only other option would be to a complete uninstall/reinstall —
Just make sure you delete the Attila %AppData% folder after you uninstall the game as it stilll may cause a crash. Delete the Attila folder —

then verify games Cache and reboot.

Another way to find the %AppData% folder is to click on the Windows Desktop Start Icon — In the Search Box type — %AppData% — Click Enter — The Roaming Folder should Appear — Click on it — you will now see The Creative Assembly Folder — click on it — find the Attila Folder and Delete it — verify the Games Cache and reboot — then you can uninstall and re-install for a clean install. If this doesn’t work something else is going on.

Log Out of Steam and Log back in —
Uninstall Steam and reinstall —
Also If you get a error message, do a seach here and on Google for possible fixes.

I haven’t tried this but it worked for a few players.

For those of you having issues with installs on Windows 10, where you run the launcher, hit ‘play’ and steam doesn’t do anything, I’ve just managed to get it working after a lot of pain and struggle.

The key to fixing mine was the followng.

Step 1. Go to your Attila Directory

e.g: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTotal War Attila

Step 2. Right click on the awesomium_process.exe and go to its properties.

Step 3. Under the compatability tab.

— Set compatability mode to Windows 8
— Ensure the ‘Disable display scaling on high DPI settings’ checkbox is ticked
— Select ‘Run this program as administrator’
— Hit Apply.

Step 5. Apply the same changes to the Attila.exe file.

My game now loads correctly after I hit play on the launcher. I’ve seen similiar solutions posted but I personally haven’t seen anyone suggest editing the compatibility settings on the awesomium_process file. Not certain its going to be everyone’s fix but it worked for me so I thought I’d post here.

do you have any 3rd party software running ? One guy had a video capture program running and when he shut it off Attila worked fine. I believe it was called FRAPS ?

Thanx for your advise. Step by step manual gave me a clue on how to fix the problem. Running the game as an admin failed, but an error appeared saying than MSVCP100.dll library was missing. Reinstalling the C++ Visual package from the Steam folder itself helped to fix the problem.

Narrowed it down to a mod issue. Uninstalled all mods and it worked. Slowly adding mods back to find the culprit :/

1. Reboot your computer
2. Open the folder C:SteamSteamAppscommonTotal War Attila
3. Delete the following files

4. Verify game cache and make sure your antivirus and windows firewall is disabled while doing so. Launch the game once it’s finished downloading the files.

Find the C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTotal War Attilaredist folder Location that he listed above — click on the two vcredist files that ends in .exe in the redist folder to install. Open the DirextX folder in the redist folder and click on the DXSETUP.exe file to install DirectX . Then I would verify the games cache to make sure all files are there and O.K.

If Attila doesnt start try this
It seems that a lot of people have a problem that Attila won’t start. There is a sticky with a list that contains a lot of useful tips that can help. But if nothing there will fix the problem try this:

A friend of mine had the same problem that her game didnt start. She tried everything in this list and nothing helped, but we found another solution.

It seems that the Launcher is causing the problems. Just open your Attila folder in Steamapps. Open the folder «launcher» and rename the launcher.exe to something different like launcherOriginal.exe. Then get the Attila.exe, put it in the folder launcher an rename it to «launcher.exe». The Game will now start without the launcher causing the problem. 🙂

I was able to fix it by running the game as administrator and then selecting trouble shoot when it didnt launch. It found a file and now my game works. Once again thank you to those who helped me.

   I’m having this now for the first time ever. I started by uninstalling mods and progressed to deleting the entire Attila directory manually and reinstalling the game, no mods.

   What the hell. I have no mods. Clean install. Deleted ENTIRE Attila folder manually. Restarted computer.

   I’ve never seen this before.

   I deleted entire directory too and tried to start with no mods, still got the instant crash and error.

   If anyone is having this issue do this:

   Delete your Appcache folder, the contents of the Attila folder in the appdata/roaming folder, reacquire, roll back to 4.1, exit steam, opt out of 4.1 reacquire the latest patch.
   restart everything.

   Take your latest savegame out of the appdata/roaming/savegame folder and put on desktop, you can likely continue campaign after it’s all done.

   This error is probably a corrupted install of the latest patch.

   guys, the only thing you need to delete is: C:…\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Attila\scripts\user.script.txt its a small file.

   For me it helped to delete the «C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Launcher» folder.

When I launch Attila I deactivated all my mods and I verified the integrity of my Attila files yet still same message:
«VFS Error: could not load the mods

It looks like the mods you have in your data directory don’t play well together. Consider withdrawing them and reintroducing them one by one to see what the offending combination is. Don’t forget to share your findings on the forum!»

Fred, are your mods older than the new-ish (new to me ) launcher?
it supports load order ( a plus ) but borked sme of the older mods ( a minus )-
not all the modders went back and repackaged their 4-5 year old mods ( understandably )-
some still work. that’s my experience, anyway having just reinstalled this from — whenever.

‘VFS error: Could not load the mods’ — I’m not running mods and have reinstalled twice

I’ve been playing since MTW1 and have been modding since Empire FYI. I’ve never seen this before.

Just prior to the latest patch I was 150 turns into a AoC campaign running only the 3 Radious mods for AoC. I started getting this error when the game would crash the second I clicked play.

I deselected the mods, still the error.

I deleted the mods from data folder, still.

I deleted the data folder, reacquired, tried to start with no mods subscribed or in data folder, still.

I deleted the entire Attila directory and the appcache folder, reinstalled, still.

List of things that I know have worked for me in the past. —
Run Windows Upate Utility to make sure Windows is up to date — Also Make sure video drivers are updated.

First option is to Verify game Cache.
Next if that didn’t help.
Did you try any of these —- Delete the hidden Attila %AppData% Folder below. — Then verify Game Cache.
It’s a hidden folder.

If none of the above steps don’t work the only other option would be to a complete uninstall/reinstall —
Just make sure you delete the Attila %AppData% folder after you uninstall the game as it stilll may cause a crash. Delete the Attila folder —

then verify games Cache and reboot.

Another way to find the %AppData% folder is to click on the Windows Desktop Start Icon — In the Search Box type — %AppData% — Click Enter — The Roaming Folder should Appear — Click on it — you will now see The Creative Assembly Folder — click on it — find the Attila Folder and Delete it — verify the Games Cache and reboot — then you can uninstall and re-install for a clean install. If this doesn’t work something else is going on.

Log Out of Steam and Log back in —
Uninstall Steam and reinstall —
Also If you get a error message, do a seach here and on Google for possible fixes.

I haven’t tried this but it worked for a few players.

For those of you having issues with installs on Windows 10, where you run the launcher, hit ‘play’ and steam doesn’t do anything, I’ve just managed to get it working after a lot of pain and struggle.

The key to fixing mine was the followng.

Step 1. Go to your Attila Directory

e.g: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTotal War Attila

Step 2. Right click on the awesomium_process.exe and go to its properties.

Step 3. Under the compatability tab.

— Set compatability mode to Windows 8
— Ensure the ‘Disable display scaling on high DPI settings’ checkbox is ticked
— Select ‘Run this program as administrator’
— Hit Apply.

Step 5. Apply the same changes to the Attila.exe file.

My game now loads correctly after I hit play on the launcher. I’ve seen similiar solutions posted but I personally haven’t seen anyone suggest editing the compatibility settings on the awesomium_process file. Not certain its going to be everyone’s fix but it worked for me so I thought I’d post here.

do you have any 3rd party software running ? One guy had a video capture program running and when he shut it off Attila worked fine. I believe it was called FRAPS ?

Thanx for your advise. Step by step manual gave me a clue on how to fix the problem. Running the game as an admin failed, but an error appeared saying than MSVCP100.dll library was missing. Reinstalling the C++ Visual package from the Steam folder itself helped to fix the problem.

Narrowed it down to a mod issue. Uninstalled all mods and it worked. Slowly adding mods back to find the culprit :/

1. Reboot your computer
2. Open the folder C:SteamSteamAppscommonTotal War Attila
3. Delete the following files

4. Verify game cache and make sure your antivirus and windows firewall is disabled while doing so. Launch the game once it’s finished downloading the files.

If Attila doesnt start try this
It seems that a lot of people have a problem that Attila won’t start. There is a sticky with a list that contains a lot of useful tips that can help. But if nothing there will fix the problem try this:

A friend of mine had the same problem that her game didnt start. She tried everything in this list and nothing helped, but we found another solution.

It seems that the Launcher is causing the problems. Just open your Attila folder in Steamapps. Open the folder «launcher» and rename the launcher.exe to something different like launcherOriginal.exe. Then get the Attila.exe, put it in the folder launcher an rename it to «launcher.exe». The Game will now start without the launcher causing the problem. 🙂

I was able to fix it by running the game as administrator and then selecting trouble shoot when it didnt launch. It found a file and now my game works. Once again thank you to those who helped me.

Hey guys i just bought the game and really wanted to play it but when i try to run it there’s a VFS Error Message and the launcher closes. Can anybody help me? Restartet the pc, verfied my game folder, updated my grafic drivers and startet the game as an admin still doesnt work.

I am not realy shure how i solved this problem but i think the first step was verifying the game data of the game(go to your steam libary-> right click on attila—> go to properties—> local files—> verify game data)

the next step is to deinstall all the mods and verify again. if this is still not working you could try to run the game as admin(rightclick on the game launcher—> start as admin)

and if this is still not working just reinstall the game and hope for your best.

Sry if this doesnt work. it was a long time ago when i had this problem and i solved it somehow(cant remember how but i think the things i wrote above could be a start)

The thing is I always get this message, even if I don’t have any mods selected or even installed. I made sure that I was unsubscribed to them on my profile in steam and the «modification.ini» has nothing in it. What do I do?

FYI I’m reinstalling for the 3rd time right now, give me a few minutes and I’ll try it and post the mdmp if it crashes again. I’d deleted the whole directory before I thought about the crash files.

Is the dxdiag needed or just the mdmp?

Yep crashed like a MF.

Manually deleted entire Attila folder and the appcache folder, fresh instal, again, no mods.

I was just playing this game fine (and have been for months) prior to the last update, what did you do?

Fred, are your mods older than the new-ish (new to me ) launcher?
it supports load order ( a plus ) but borked sme of the older mods ( a minus )-
not all the modders went back and repackaged their 4-5 year old mods ( understandably )-
some still work. that’s my experience, anyway having just reinstalled this from — whenever.

‘VFS error: Could not load the mods’ — I’m not running mods and have reinstalled twice

I’ve been playing since MTW1 and have been modding since Empire FYI. I’ve never seen this before.

Just prior to the latest patch I was 150 turns into a AoC campaign running only the 3 Radious mods for AoC. I started getting this error when the game would crash the second I clicked play.

I deselected the mods, still the error.

I deleted the mods from data folder, still.

I deleted the data folder, reacquired, tried to start with no mods subscribed or in data folder, still.

I deleted the entire Attila directory and the appcache folder, reinstalled, still.

What I have read using Google Search if verifying the games Cache doesnt fix it is this —

So if unsubscribing from all your Mods doesn’t help i I would delete the Attila Data folder and verify the games cache again. How to Info in List below —

List of things that I know have worked for me in the past. —
Run Windows Upate Utility to make sure Windows is up to date — Also Make sure video drivers are updated.

First option is to Verify game Cache.
Next if that didn’t help.
Did you try any of these —- Delete the hidden Attila %AppData% Folder below. — Then verify Game Cache.
It’s a hidden folder.

If none of the above steps don’t work the only other option would be to a complete uninstall/reinstall —
Just make sure you delete the Attila %AppData% folder after you uninstall the game as it stilll may cause a crash. Delete the Attila folder —

then verify games Cache and reboot.

Another way to find the %AppData% folder is to click on the Windows Desktop Start Icon — In the Search Box type — %AppData% — Click Enter — The Roaming Folder should Appear — Click on it — you will now see The Creative Assembly Folder — click on it — find the Attila Folder and Delete it — verify the Games Cache and reboot — then you can uninstall and re-install for a clean install. If this doesn’t work something else is going on.

Log Out of Steam and Log back in —
Uninstall Steam and reinstall —
Also If you get a error message, do a seach here and on Google for possible fixes.

I haven’t tried this but it worked for a few players.

For those of you having issues with installs on Windows 10, where you run the launcher, hit ‘play’ and steam doesn’t do anything, I’ve just managed to get it working after a lot of pain and struggle.

The key to fixing mine was the followng.

Step 1. Go to your Attila Directory

e.g: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTotal War Attila

Step 2. Right click on the awesomium_process.exe and go to its properties.

Step 3. Under the compatability tab.

— Set compatability mode to Windows 8
— Ensure the ‘Disable display scaling on high DPI settings’ checkbox is ticked
— Select ‘Run this program as administrator’
— Hit Apply.

Step 5. Apply the same changes to the Attila.exe file.

My game now loads correctly after I hit play on the launcher. I’ve seen similiar solutions posted but I personally haven’t seen anyone suggest editing the compatibility settings on the awesomium_process file. Not certain its going to be everyone’s fix but it worked for me so I thought I’d post here.

do you have any 3rd party software running ? One guy had a video capture program running and when he shut it off Attila worked fine. I believe it was called FRAPS ?

Severus has Total War: ATTILA 2 hours ago
Thanx for your advise. Step by step manual gave me a clue on how to fix the problem. Running the game as an admin failed, but an error appeared saying than MSVCP100.dll library was missing. Reinstalling the C++ Visual package from the Steam folder itself helped to fix the problem.

Narrowed it down to a mod issue. Uninstalled all mods and it worked. Slowly adding mods back to find the culprit :/

1. Reboot your computer
2. Open the folder C:SteamSteamAppscommonTotal War Attila
3. Delete the following files

4. Verify game cache and make sure your antivirus and windows firewall is disabled while doing so. Launch the game once it’s finished downloading the files.

Find the C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTotal War Attilaredist folder Location that he listed above — click on the two vcredist files that ends in .exe in the redist folder to install. Open the DirextX folder in the redist folder and click on the DXSETUP.exe file to install DirectX . Then I would verify the games cache to make sure all files are there and O.K.

If Attila doesnt start try this
It seems that a lot of people have a problem that Attila won’t start. There is a sticky with a list that contains a lot of useful tips that can help. But if nothing there will fix the problem try this:

A friend of mine had the same problem that her game didnt start. She tried everything in this list and nothing helped, but we found another solution.

It seems that the Launcher is causing the problems. Just open your Attila folder in Steamapps. Open the folder «launcher» and rename the launcher.exe to something different like launcherOriginal.exe. Then get the Attila.exe, put it in the folder launcher an rename it to «launcher.exe». The Game will now start without the launcher causing the problem. 🙂

I was able to fix it by running the game as administrator and then selecting trouble shoot when it didnt launch. It found a file and now my game works. Once again thank you to those who helped me.
