So, starting last night, the door handle sensor stopped locking and unlocking, had to use the remote to unlock and lock, and engine started normally and instantly, but a dash warning says «Electrical system: Low battery, battery will charge when driven» or something like that briefly and everything back to normal, and door handle sensor would work if I stop engine and lock it right away, but if I wait like 5 mins or so, the sensor won’t work, does this look like the battery is charging but dropping voltage rapidly?
It’s a 1.5 yrs old Varta EFB battery, I never use Start/Stop. Scan came back with U141100 Battery terminal recognition open circuit, and battery is at 13.7x with engine running and 12.1x with engine off, does this sound like a bad battery or should I have the alternator looked at? Thanks!

Looks like a bad battery to me. If it was alternator then you wouldnt get about 14v when engine is running.
Modern starters can start will low voltage unlike the old days when that was the tell tale signs of a bad battery.
If you only do short journeys it might be worth shoving the battery on a slow charger over night to see if it helps. Or try and claim on the warranty, varta batteries has like 5 or 7 year warranty.

Not wanting to sound a bit ignorant but open circuit usually means «no connection» as in broken wire or damaged/blown fuse.
Are all the battery leads connected/undamaged.

Yup, first thing I checked, everything seems normal at the battery, and I don’t believe there’s a fuse for the battery itself?

Could be a relay or fuse for the main charging circuit.

13.7V across the battery terminals with the engine running is far too low. An alternator should be charging at 14.2/14.5 V . A fully charged battery will sit above the 12.1 V you have, more like 12.5 V. 12.1V is heavily discharged.

Meaning it could be alternator issue rather than battery?

13.7v could be just tick over revs. Give it some revs and if it doesn’t rise above 14v then maybe look at the alternator.

It looks like that to me. The car is accurately reporting the fact the battery is in a low state of charge, so alternator is a suspect.

Bring the revs up to 2000 and see if it hits about 14v+ that will tell you if it’s alternator. If you are measuring with the car just ticking over it’s not going to be on full charge.

Car’s at idle when measuring… Should go over 14v if bringing it up to 2000. So as long as it’s 14.x at 2K above, it should be battery?

Yes, should be 14.2/14.5V at an engine speed of a couple of thousand revs/min. Just a thought, are you using the car regularly?

I’ve been getting this a lot lately also. Going crazy trying to figure out the problem. My steering gets heavy also when this happens. I’ve checked all battery connections and grounds and peeked at all the fuses. Battery voltage is in the high 13’s when car is on.
I’m stumped idk what else to check.

Any luck on finding the issue? Steering when heavy as well. I scanned and had the same U141100 Battery Terminal Recognition code.

I never really found the root cause. It’s a strange thing that I tried solving countless times. I have to check my obdeleven to see exactly what I did, but I did a bunch of basic relearns and adaptations but that didn’t get me anywhere. Fortunately it hasn’t happened in a good while, ever since I changed my dsg fluid. But that should have absolutely no correlation. Only possible connection I can think of is putting the battery terminals back on in the wrong order by accident when I did my mounts and it somehow messes with the ecu till I did my dsg fluid change and rehooked the terminals in the correct order?! It’s a stretch and I doubt it but I really can’t say, VW electrical gremlins maybe?

Not even possible to hook up battery wrong. Cables not long enough. Possible they weren’t tightened properly.

Lmao, I didn’t mean actually hooking the terminals up to the wrong posts. Meant the wrong order as in rehooking the negative first vs the positive first, although I guess it can be argued if that even matters. They were definitely tightened down, checked fuses and grounds, nada. And like I said I highly doubt there’s any correlation, just saying what I did. It hasn’t come back *knocks on wood* but I’d say it’s just a matter of time because I never found the root problem.

Hey All,
I am wondering if you found a way to solve the issue with high RPM and steering it was getting heavy after a while?
At the begin sorry for my english but I had same issue with my Skoda Octavia 3 rs. I fighted with this since 2 years, I did many unnecessairly things.
Here is my link where I described issues what i had.. Hopefully teanslator will tramnslate it correctly you will be able understand all..

Sorry for link but it a long strory to write again..
Back to the subject.. for me helped change the IBS sensor on the battery.. All problems with U141100 and U140600 didnt appeard again.
I am shering this info because no one from the so skilled services guys wasnt able helps me, only adviced me to change realy expensive parts but this IBS part cosnt me 6 euro (used one).
Right now I mafde 2k km and all good, what previously happened (heavy steering nad RPM) each time while I was going a litle longer distance.
Hopehully it will helps u to..
Cheers..

Hi guys! I need your help…
History;
Customer complains of bad battery, battery and later alternator gets replaced. Problems persist.
I get the car and do battery coding, seems to work fine. Customer comes back; AC, Radio and Start/Stop not working. After some investigating I see that the car goes into “Energy Management” and turns off everything not essential to save power. I check -Communication with alternator and battery. Intermittent faults of “U141100 Battery terminal recognition Open circuit“. I replaced the -cable between current-sensor/alternator/databox under the dash. No more U141100-errors. Energy saving problem persists.
I remove the (new) alternator and send it to my supplier for checking, they test it (and -communication) and it turns out fine.
Battery management is handled by the CAN-gateway and not a separate . The only thing I now see that does not make sense is that the “IDE01855 Generator Current” value is constantly under reporting with a factor of 1.5-3x. So, for example, If the value is 9A it’s actually (measured with a clamp meter) 21A.
The IDE01855-value does not seem to come from the alternator as it does not immediately “disappear” if I disconnect the alternator. It updates for a minute or so, and then disappears.
I see some hints of the possibility to do adaptations of the alternator load, but I can not find such adaptation. I also see some “generator” parameters in the long coding of the CAN-gateway, but no documentation.
My adoption of the battery capacity also seems to “go away” after some time and changes to 73Ah.
Does anyone have any idea?
Best Regards!
/V

I remove the (new) alternator and send it to my supplier for checking, they test it (and -communication) and it turns out fine.
Aftermarket alternator?

@Segil:Hi. I’m just guessing, but have you considered the pissabolity(?) of J367 being implicated in the fault? The hex 19 module appears to be happy in your scan report, so it believes that everything is hunky-dory — but perhaps this is because the battery monitor control module is under reporting the charge flow rate to the alternator- maybe?
As you will know, the particular circuit between the hex19 module and the Alternator on vehicles is shared with J367 — see my very cut-down version of a in my picture below. Note: this is intended as a general schematic only — it’s not specific to your Polo.
My experience with this module has been when it has failed only, or when it has been deliberately disconnected (as an inappropriate way for disabling Start Stop) — so not in the instance when it is under/over reporting to hex19. Perhaps there are test facilities for validating J367 operation in Advance Measurement Values — maybe?
In any event, perhaps check the status of the 2 x wire harness for J367 (it sits on the -ve battery terminal) -paying particular attention to pin #1 (the wire).
Again, just a hunch
Don

Thank you for your reply!
Uwe;
The alternator is a BOSCH-original, F000BL08F2 (same number as the original VAG has)
Regulator, BOSCH, 027 222 08 54 ( 19 ID#24)
Same as the car is supplied with in factory. The alternator is bought from a big distributor so low risk for counterfeit. They have also tested the alternator in a test bench, including -communication.
Don;
That was exactly my idea initially. The thing is the J367 reports the right amperage («IDE01836 Battery current 3.061 A») verified with clamp meter and the communication seems to work fine. I have replaced the wiring, and connectors.
I’m lost
?? And hopefully the new battery are one the Polo likes
