[Solved] Error 29506 when installing Microsoft SQL Server Manament Studio Express on Windows Vista or Windows 7

Administration
Note: This article is applied on installing Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express which is used for manage Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express only.
When you are installing Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express on Windows Vista or Windows 7, you may receive this error message:
The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 29506.
This error message relates with permission issue (UAC) on Windows Vista and Windows 7. To solve this problem, you have to re-run the installer again using elevated command prompt by run the command prompt as administrator and execute the installer in there. If you are using 64-bit Windows, you should use the command prompt at C:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe instead. Otherwise, you can use the command prompt at C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe. You will see the step-by-step guide to use elevated command prompt to execute the installer file on the section below.
The other solution, you can disable UAC on Windows but I don’t recommend it since it will lower your security system.
Step-by-step to fix error 29506
- Run elevated command prompt by right-click on Command Prompt in Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
Note: This step is for 32-bit Windows. If you are using 64-bit Windows, see the next step.
- If you are using 64-bit Windows, you have to run the command prompt in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as administrator.
- On User Account Control, click Yes.
- On Command Prompt (both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows), change path to directory where the installer file is and execute the file. By default, the file name for 32-bit version is SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi and 64-bit version is SQLServer2005_SSMSEE_x64.msi.
- On Setup Wizard, follow the instruction as usual. There won’t be the error message this time.

Hi Adsamarnalkar,
This error message relates with permission issue (UAC) on Windows Vista and Windows 7. To solve this problem, you have to re-run the installer again using elevated command prompt by run the command prompt as administrator and execute the installer in there.
The other solution, you could change the UAC settings to be minimal (search for UAC in the start bar and select Control Panel –> Change User Account Control Settings) and set to minimal settings. Or you can disable UAC to solve the issue. Then you
could install SQL Server Management Studio. For more information, you could refer to

I was trying to apply the SP3 patch on a server that was running on SP2. It fails and I get the error below
———————————————————————————-
Product : Database Services (********)
Product Version (Previous): 3054
Product Version (Final) :
Status : Failure
Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQL9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_sql.msp.log
Error Number : 29506
Error Description : MSP Error: 29506 SQL Server Setup failed to modify security permissions on file C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\atxcore90.dll for user ******* . To proceed, verify that the account and domain running SQL Server Setup exist, that the account running SQL Server Setup has administrator privileges, and that exists on the destination drive.
———————————————————————————-The user belonged to the administrators group and also had access to all the drives in the machine. I get it specific to the atxcore90.dll unlike the Data files which I have seen in many posts. But even then I keep getting this error.
Please post our findings if you have already encountered such an issue.
Thanks in advance

Hello,
As the article says, please delete the registry keys only for the local groups that have been removed for the initial installation of SQL Server 2005.
Please backup your registry before deleting or modifying anything from the registry.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry
Yes, restart the computer. It is not a bad idea.
Hope this helps.

Finally, it worked!!!
Here are some notes on the things I did to fix this.
Initially I had the MSP Error: 29528 against the Database Services when I installed the SP3 upgrade. Going by the article on the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925976 site I had to replace the SID values of the 4 user groups, AGTGroup, SQLGroup, ASGroup, and the FTSGroup from the registry.
After taking a backup of the registry prior to modifying/deleting anything, I made the changes. But that led me to another error MSP Error: 29506, something about security permissions to the atxcore90.dll . No matter for what file or folder you get the Error 29506, it has something to do with the SID values in the user groups.file
The discussion on the post http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlsecurity/thread/fe1e4204-8e82-4a71-a0b5-931e5b7b9a90 had a suggestion to clear the SID values for all the 4 groups, AGTGroup, SQLGroup, ASGroup, and the FTSGroup from the registry before the SP3 upgrade.
Please note that a Server Restart is required to populate these user group SID values again. If the server is not restarted, the registry values still remain blank and SP3 fails again. After the server has restarted, once the user group SIDs are populated with the correct values, try the SP3 install and Eureka!!
Alberto, thank you for guiding me to right post and for your valuable suggestions.
