Hey, I have resettet my computer a week ago, and before that, I had sea of thieves and it worked fine. But now I have downloaded and deleted the game 4 times and it doesn’t work. it doesn’t open, and when it does it says «There is a missing or corrupt data file that is required for the game to run».

I have done so many things to try and fix it, and the most recent one was to try and make an exception in my «Microsoft virus and threat protection» but I can’t find my sea of thieves file anywhere on the StiFinder? Can someone help?

Fix 7: Faulty Hardware

Fix Sea of Thieves Missing or Corrupt DLL File

The cause of the error is what’s stated in the message – the game didn’t install property and one or more DLL files are either missing or have been corrupted during the installation process. A sure shot fix for the error is to reinstall the game. it works in resolving the error most of the time, but users may not want to spend time downloading and reinstalling the game again, especially those with slow internet connection. Hence, you can try some other fixes that can potentially resolve the missing or corrupt DLL files error. If noting works, you should reinstall the game.

I suggest that after each fix you try, run the game and check if the error still occurs. If it does, try the next fix.

Fix Sea of Thieves Missing or Corrupt DLL File

Fix 1: Run SFC Command

If you are encountering a problem with DLL files, running the SFC command in Commands Prompt is an effective solution. The command scans and repair any errors with the operating system and hence address the problem with the app. To perform this fix, you have to start the Admin mode of Command Prompt. Here are the steps.

  1. Press Windows Key + I and type cmd
  2. Press Shift + Ctrl + Enter simultaneously, select Yes when prompted
  3. Type sfc /scannow and hit Enter
  4. Wait for the process to complete and your system will restart. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Once the process is complete, launch the game and check if the missing or corrupt DLL files error still appears.

Fix 2: Set Exclusion on Windows Virus & Threat Protection

Whether you are using a third-party antivirus software or the Windows Virus & Threat Protection, it may be a cause of the problem. When the system detects some files or an app to be behaving abnormally, it blocks its function. This could be happening with Sea of Thieves. Hence, you should set an exclusion of the antivirus software for the game folders. You can also disable the antivirus software and run the game to check if the problem lies there. If the problem is with the security software, the long-term solution is setting an exclusion. Here is the process.

Windows Virus & Threat Protection

  1. Press Windows Key + I and select Update & Security
  2. Click on Windows Security, select Virus & Threat Protection
  3. Under Virus & threat protection settings, click on Manage settings
  4. Locate Exclusions by scrolling down, click on Add or remove exclusions
  5. Click on Add an exclusion and select Folder
  6. Browse the Sea of Thieves folderand set the exclusion.

Kaspersky Internet Security

  • Home >> Settings >> Additional >> Threats and Exclusions >> Exclusions >> Specify Trusted Applications >> Add.

AVG

  • Home >> Settings >> Components >> Web Shield >> Exceptions >> Set the exception.

Avast Antivirus

  • Home >> Settings >> General >> Exclusions >> Set the exclusion.

Fix 3: Reset Sea of Thieves

Resetting the game fixes a lot of errors. It basically reinstalls the game and reverts to the default settings. Your files are not affected. Here are the steps to reset Sea of Thieves.

  1. Press Windows + I and select Apps
  2. Click on Sea of Thieves and select Advanced options
  3. Scroll-down and locate Reset, click on Reset under it.

Once the process completes, check if the Sea of Thieves Missing or Corrupt DLL File error still occurs.

Fix 4: Update the System and Graphics Card Drivers

It’s a gamer’s modus operandi to keep the OS and the graphics card drivers updated to have the best experience in games and to avoid errors. As most games and new patches are built for the latest version of the Windows and drivers, updating them can fix the problem. Windows recently released the 2004 update, if you have not installed it, do it now. Nvidia and AMD both constantly release new updates for their driver software, the new updates address the bugs in the previous patch, so you should update those as well.

Fix 5: Reinstall the Game

Finally, if nothing else has worked we recommend reinstalling the game from scratch. Uninstall the game from Windows Apps & features and reinstall it again after a reboot of the system.

That’s all we have in this guide, we hope your Sea of Thieves missing or corrupt DLL File error is resolved.

Game crashing is one of the major result of overclocking of the CPU, GPU, or memory. Although it can give significant boost to game performance, the overhead of the component can crash the game and even cause the BSOD. Since Sea Of Thieves does not require very high graphics, you can get the max performance without overclocking. Hence, if you have overclocked the system, revert it back. Sea Of Thieves PC isn’t a perfect version as it’s facing errors and issues like AvacadoBeard Error, crash at startup, System Error, black screen, and more. Here I have listed all of the game’s errors and issues along with their fixes and workarounds.

Sea Of Thieves Crash, Stuttering, And Fixes

Sea Of Thieves has launched on Steam and PC gamers didn’t waste any time grabbing it. It’s a well-optimized game but despite that, PC players are reporting errors and issues like AvacadoBeard, the game not launching, black screen, and more.

The following are the errors and issues that players are experiencing along with their fixes and workarounds.

Before we start, do note that the game requires Windows 10 to run as it doesn’t support older Windows OS.

System Error Fix

Sea Of Thieves players are reporting the SoTGame.exe – System Error with the following error message.

api-ms-win-core-version-l1-1-1.dll is missing from your computer

This error is mostly occurring for players trying to launch the game on Windows 8 or 7. Well, the game’s minimum requirement is Windows 10 so it won’t work on older Windows OS. Players need to upgrade to Win 10 and the error will be fixed.

Game Not Launching Fix

Players are reporting that when they launch Sea of Thieves from Steam, the game never starts. The issue is that your system might be missing or have corrupted
vcruntime140.dll and msvcp140.dll files.

This can be fixed by reinstalling C++ Redistributables. Go to Steam\steamapps\common\Steamworks Shared. Install both x64 and x86 versions of it. Start the game and it’ll be working just fine.

Xbox Live Account Not Connecting Fix

A lot of players have reported that they are unable to connect their Xbox Live Account after they press Start Game and they get the following message.

You must be signed in to Xbox Live to play Sea of thieves. Please sign in and try again. (Ashbeard)

This due to your anti-virus or Windows Defender Blocking the game. What you can do is either approve the app in your anti-virus or disable your anti-virus or exclude the game’s install folder from your anti-virus. This will fix the error.

Black Screen Fix

Some Sea of Thieves players are reporting black screen issues with the game. Some players are experiencing black screen while they can hear the audio in the background while some are experiencing flashing black screen issues whenever they click on something.

For the black screen with audio in the background, launch the game and when the black screen appears, press “Alt + Enter”. The game will go into Windowed mode and will start to display. Go to video settings and set a resolution that is native to your display and you’ll be able to play in Fullscreen.

As for the players experiencing the flashing black screen, just disable any GPU overlay like GeForce Experience and the issue will be fixed. Open GeForce Experience > settings > General > turn off in-game overlay.

AvacadoBeard Error Fix

Sea of Thieves AvacadoBeard error is related to the Xbox Live account. If you are experiencing it then create a new one and log-in. This will fix the issue.

Low FPS, Stuttering Fix

Performance issues like low FPS, stuttering, and random FPS drops are common among PC video games. Sea Of Thieves PC version is not exempt from such issues as players are reporting stuttering and FPS issues. Here are a few workarounds that’ll fix Sea Of Thieves PC performance.

First, make sure you have installed the latest GPU drivers and make sure there is no background process using too much of your HDD, CPU, or GPU.

If you are playing Sea Of Thieves on a laptop with a dedicated GPU, then chances are the game is running on integrated graphics. Some times games don’t automatically switch to the dedicated GPU.

For Nvidia users, open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > select the game. Select the non-integrated GPU option.

As for the AMD GPU users, open Device Manager and disable the integrated graphics under Display Adapters.

If you aren’t playing on a laptop then open Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > select the game. Make the following changes.

Set Vertical Sync to “ON”
Set “Power Management Mode” to “Prefer Maximum Performance”
Set “Texture Filtering- Quality” to “High Performance”.

This should fix the performance issues like stuttering. In case the issues still persist, then follow the steps above but set Vertical Sync to “Fast”. Apply the changes, disable in-game v.sync and the stuttering will be fixed. You might also get a boost in FPS too.

Crash At Startup Fix

A lot of players are reporting that Sea Of Thieves doesn’t start and crashes at launch. Here are a few workarounds for this issue.

Make sure you are playing the game on Windows 10 as the game doesn’t support older Windows OS. Furthermore, make sure you are using the admin account.

Games often crash at launch if they don’t have admin rights. Right-click on the game’s exe > properties > Compatibility tab > check “Run this program as administrator”. Apply the change and the issue should be resolved.

Your anti-virus software or Windows Defender might be blocking the game. Either disable it or exclude the game’s folder from it. Then verify game files. Launch the game and it will be running fine.

Using third-party monitoring software like MSI Afterburner can also cause the game to crash at startup. Disable any third-aprty utilities and the issue will be resolved.
