  • I recently tried installing SQL Server Express 2012 on my computer. Its a new computer running Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2008 and 2010 are also installed. The installer will get most of the way through the installation and then will stuck indefinitely.
    If I right click on the installer on the task and then select «Managed SQL Server Installer«, then this error message appears:

    SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

    SQL Server 2012 ScenarioEngine.exe and setuppatch.exe cannot be run in this mode. If you are running ScenarioEngine.exe, start setup.exe instead. If you are running setuppatch.exe, run it from the command prompt, as the user interface is not supported
    for this action. For more information about Setup, see SQL Server Books Online.

    Error code 0x84B20001.

    I tried canceling out of the install but it couldn’t do this either so I had to force it to shutdown.

    So my questions are:

    1. The fact that the installer wasn’t able to back out of the installer properly makes me wonder if there is garbage half install that is now my computer. Is there any potential problems from the botched install and how is this determined, and how do I go
    about cleaning it up properly?

    2. The error message tells you to run the installer from command prompt. Is this really the solution to this problem? Would running «SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU» from command prompt be sufficient or is there more to it than this?

    SQL Server Express 2012 is supported on Windows 8. You could try to install SQL Server 2012 through SQL Server installation wizard or command prompt. Please try it again.

    Please try to run the following command on the Command Prompt (as Administrator):
    SFC  /SCANNOW

    Agree with you. It seems there is some corruption.

  • Its telliing unable to open that file you can also try running it manually…apart from what Alberto has suggested

    Or try copying it to C drive and then execute

MSSQL 2008 SP1 install fails: A failure was detected for a previous installation, patch, or repair 0x84B20001

  • When attempting to install SQL Server 2008 SP1, I get the «Setup Failure» message below, along with Error code 0x84B20001.  I did read the summary*.txt files from previous installations in «C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log» as mentioned in the error message; the «Final result» and «Exit message» of the previous install is «Passed», so I’m not finding an answer that way.  I have also pasted the version info below.  What would you advise?

    A failure was detected for a previous installation, patch, or repair during configuration for features [SQL_DTS_Full,Connectivity_Full,SQL_SSMS_Full,SDK_Full,Tools_Legacy_Full,SQL_BIDS_Full,SQL_SSMS_Adv,SQL_PowerShell_Tools_ANS,SQL_WRITER,]. In order to apply this patch package (KB968369), you must resolve any issues with the previous operation that failed. View the summary.txt log to determine why the previous operation failed.

  • There was a failure during the initial installation and the installation needs to be repaired before applying the patch. You need to run Repair first. The Repair  option is located on Maintenance page in SQL Server Installation Center.

I was attempting to install MS SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1  and would get the following issue detecting a previous installation for  RS_Server_Adv with error 0x04B20001.

Following a few posts and blogs, I found out the SQL server modifies certain registry keys during installation attempts.   By resetting the key values, you can force the app to think no previous installation was attempted.

This was the method I used to solve this issue.

On the SQL server:1. Run REGEDT32

2. Open Key ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSRS10_50.MSSQLSERVERConfigurationState

3. Change the RS_Server_adv Value from 3 to 1

After that, I reran the SP1 install and it completed without any issues.
