When attempting to log in to Nexus Mods, some users may encounter the error message shown below. This is, more often than not, down to an over-zealous addon or privacy setting preventing the site from working as intended. Before raising an issue with the staff, you are advised to try using a different browser or try disabling all your add-ons to ensure that it isn’t your local settings causing the problem.

Firefox Add-on «NoScript Security Suite«

One of the most common offenders causing this issue is the add-on for the Firefox browser called NoScript Security Suite. This and other similar addons work on the outdated assumption that blocking all running scripts on a site will protect your browsing experience. While not entirely false, a lot of websites now use scripts to display dynamic content and no longer use static pages — with the scripts blocked you will find issues with many sites across the web including Nexus Mods. If, however, you insist on using such addons you must add Nexus Mods as a trusted source of scripts to be able to use our site. Below is an image showing how to do this with NoScript v10.1.8.16.

Allowing our sites to run scripts will reload the page and then it should function as intended. Please also note, in certain cases, we need external scripts (such as Google’s reCaptcha system) to deliver content to you in a format where you can interact with it properly. When encountering an issue, you can use the ‘Temporarily allow all’ option for the site, which will not permanently trust the scripts but allow them to work so the site can function during this visit. Some of the scripts displayed will be from third-party advertisers, whose ads provide revenue that keeps the lights on at Nexus Mods. If you don’t want to see ads, we do offer a one-off lifetime removal of adverts through our Supporter or Premium memberships.

Other considerations

While this problem may not be exclusive to Firefox users, other browsers with script blocking or any kind of non-standard filtering techniques will likely cause a problem with many websites across the internet. In cases like this, staff will normally require you to go through the following troubleshooting steps before confirming an issue with our website.

  • Try repeating the action you are having problems with in a private browser window (Incognito/InPrivate/various other names).
  • Disable all add-ons currently running in your browser.
  • Test in a different browser (such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome).
  • Confirm your anti-virus or anti-spyware software is not overreaching and blocking content from our website.
  • Ensure your firewall settings do not block access to Nexus Mods servers or required script hosts.
  • Check with your ISP as to specific filtering rules (such as parental blocks) they may have in place on your internet connection.
  • In regions of the world where the local authorities restrict your access to websites and services, try using a VPN service.

If you have exhausted the options above, please feel free to drop us an email (support@nexusmods.com) where we can look into the problem further.

Problems related to authenticating NMM against Nexus.

Comments

@xAmbertje

Like the title says. Whenever I try to login, it gives me this error «Cannot reach the Nexus login server. Either your firewall is blocking NMM or the login server is down.» I can however, log in on the website… This has been going on since yesterday morning.

@Arefu

Did you check to make sure your Firewall allows NMM to connect to the internet?

@xAmbertje

Yes I did, I went to check in Windows Defender and I allowed NMM to have acces to the internet. The thing is that I never had problems with NMM before, it worked fine at first. I didn’t download anything either, it just stopped working one day.

@Arefu

Have you tried the most recent version?

@curiousletterhead

I’m having the same issue. Never happened before, allowed NMM in Windows Defender, and tried uninstalling and updating to the latest version. I still can’t log in.

@Arefu

Can you post log please? Pastebin preferred

@stormdrac

sorry, I am having the same issue, I have had the same issue since I downloaded NMM. would you mind telling me what log? and where to get it? and I will happily post a log with Pastebin.

@Arefu

Is in documents under nexus mod manage

@stormdrac

i’m an old lady you gotta be a bit more specific, what is it labeled as? i see nothing in that folder that says «log». there is one under the steam/steamapps/common/fallout4/logs/
there two folders in that one labeled Bnet and Script. ? learning as i go here. thanks

@Arefu

Sorry, the full path is:
C:\Users<Username>\Documents\Nexus Mod Manager\Logs

Or very close to it as I’m on my phone

@stormdrac

I am afraid I don’t have anything called logs in my NMM ? idk i am at a loss sorry

@Arefu

Hmm have a look around the folder them, I can’t get near my computer at the moment

@Lucidi0us

Having same issue on 0.64.3 version, but did not have it with 0.64.2. Also, the 0.64.3 hasn’t created any logs; the only logs I have are from 0.64.2 or older versions

Edit: Correction, I thought I had 0.64.3 but had 0.64.2. In 0.64.3 I can log in again, 0.64.2 was the problematic version for me. Thanks!

@Lucidi0us

OK, the first login that worked said it was sending a token. On the next reload of NMM, it asked me to enter username and password and is giving me this error again (version is 0.64.3 for certain this time)

@Arefu

I’m not reading this, put it on paste bin for the love of everything

@Lucidi0us

There’s no point in reading it at all. No log entries in it relate to login to Nexus, they stop after the app is done finding mods and initializing. I just deleted it since it seemed to bug you. There is an issue with login, but the logs don’t have any interesting data for it.

@Arefu

Well then do you want to post your Firewall rules for allowing NMM through? Or specifically add it to the Firewall so it’s allowed through explicitly.

@Lucidi0us

Sure thing.

Here is my physical firewall’s rule for outgoing connections (allow all)
image

I have Bitdefender for the local, software firewall. I have NMM whitelisted, and I can see it logging that it has let it pass:
image

I have no issues logging in with versions <= 0.63.1

@Arefu

For the sake of it do you want to check Window’s firewall just to appease my attention to detail

@Lucidi0us

Here you go:

image

@Lucidi0us

Did some poking around. The log from Bitdefender must have been when I was using 0.63.1 in earlier testing. Neither the physical firewall nor Bitdefender logs a connection attempt from 0.63.4 at all when I try to log in. On 0.63.1, I see logs in both.

On 0.64.3, I can see in Resource Monitor that it is attempting to open a connection to 77.72.3.39. I am still looking for anything else that might help. I am able to ping, trace, and connect to an nginx on EPEL! page when using chrome with that IP.

image

@Lucidi0us

Something else for you. If I run netstat -b, I do not see any data for NexusClient.exe when spamming logon attempts. After sitting idle for about 2 minutes, one entry showed up in the netstat output. The IP address corresponds to GitHub, so I am guessing it was probably checking for NNM updates at that time. I am going to run Wireshark and attempt some more log-on’s.

[NexusClient.exe]
TCP 10.0.0.10:50349 151.101.48.133:https ESTABLISHED

@Lucidi0us

Checked with Wireshark and confirmed with Microsoft Message Alayzer, NMM 0.64.3 does not make any network connections when attempting to sign-in. The only time it makes network connections appears to be when checking GitHub for a new version.

Here are the various versions from the tracelogs, in case there is something unique about my setup.

OS version: Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0
Installed .NET Versions:
CDF SP 0
v2.0.50727 SP 2
v3.0 SP 2
v3.5 SP 1
v4 SP 0
v4.0 SP 0
v4.5: 4.6 or later

@Lucidi0us

I haven’t found any more data that seems useful. For now, I have 0.64.3 and 0.64.1 installed to separate directories so I can continue to download mods, but still test 0.64.3 for you if you need more feedback.

@Lucidi0us

This issue magically resolved itself recently. I can log in on 0.64.3 now. I haven’t used my computer in a couple weeks, so I am not sure exactly when it started working.

@PeterHughes

I’m having exactly the same issue as the original poster «Cannot reach the Nexus login server. Either your firewall is blocking NMM or the login server is down.». I’ve updated to Nexus.Mod.Manager-0.65.4. I’ve disabled Windows & Norton firewalls. Initially it prompts me to enter username & password. If I type a random username it says «Invalid Username or password». If I type the correct username or wrong or correct password, then it give the above «cannot reach…» error.

@Lucidi0us

@PeterHughes This issue was impacting me 2 months ago and self-resolved.

TL;DR: It’s probably not your firewall if it you were able to login on previous versions. No idea why it started to work for me, nothing had been recently changed to cause that.

I believe there is an issue either with the logon server or an ISP/interchange level issue. Some in the forums have suggested that the login server gets DDoS’d from time to time, but it doesn’t make sense if that is only impacting certain users. ISP level issues would impact all users from the same ISP, so it could be that. One of the really telling things I saw was that when using an older version of NMM, I could log in fine. If they use the same server to login, then it doesn’t make much sense that one version would work and the other wouldn’t unless something outside of your system configuration was causing it.

@PeterHughes

Fixed: I was using the wrong username. Not sure why that would return a «cannot reach server…» error, but it did…

@BoopleSnuffe

Same problem; Can login just on the website, but NMM will not let me login.

@notnotbilly

Installing the 0.65.2 version fixed it for me — thanks for that!

@AgentRG

I had 0.63 version installed and had the same issue. After I’ve updated to 0.65.2, the error went away and I was able to login again.

@squid-box

This issue has several problems listed, and is getting pretty old, so grab NMM 0.65.9 and see if you still have problems.

If you still can’t log in with 0.65.9, create a new issue with a good description of what doesn’t work, and include as much info as you can (trace log file if applicable).

Closing this issue as inactive/bloated :)

@bWildcard

Adding both inbound and outbound connections in firewall and using your display name (not associated email) and password as allowed me to connect on 35.2

@kzzzzzzzzzzz

last comment may be 2 years old but for the sake of those still using nmm or coming back to an old install, there is a new version of nexus mod manager still maintained and on nexus if you just search «nexus mod manager». still logs in and updates. installs like an update. theres a verify process once you run it you have to have been logged into nexus and few clicks and done.

Nexus Mod Manager is probably everyone’s number one choice when it comes to software which can manage the mods you want to install to tweak games you have installed on your computer. This tool makes this process a whole lot easier but it also suffers from certain issues such as the one in the title.

“A problem occurred during install” error message

The “Nexus mod manager – a problem occurred during install” error appears when users try to install mods for certain games they own. The error message sometimes provides further info. We have prepared several working solutions so make sure you follow the article from beginning to end to hopefully solve the problem!

Among various things which can cause this problem when NMM can’t install a mod for a game you own, there are few of them which are common among plenty of users and we have decided to list them here.

First of all, NMM may not have sufficient permissions to access a file from a certain location. The culprit may be your antivirus or you simply need to run NMM as an administrator. Furthermore, you may be using an outdated version of NMM and you should definitely install the latest one which should solve the problem.

Finally, not enough space is also a major problem as mods tend to take up to 10 times more spaces when unpacked as their compression is probably too high. Try selecting a different location.

How to Fix Nexus Mod Manager ‘Problem Occurred during installation Errors

Solution 1: Disable Your Antivirus and Run NMM as Administrator

Sometimes the Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) has problems gaining enough permission on your computer in order to access certain files needed for the installation to go through. This often means that it’s either your antivirus program blocking the tool or it needs to be run with administrator permissions!

Disabling the antivirus is a process which greatly differs from one antivirus tool to another but everyone should disable Windows Defender for the installation to succeed so follow the steps below in order to do so!

Still, most of them can be disabled by right-clicking their entry in the system tray (lower right part of your screen) and choosing the Disable option.

  1. However, if you are a Windows 10 user, you should definitely disable Windows Defender if you don’t have any other antivirus installed. Right-click on the shield icon on your taskbar and click on Open.
  2. If you don’t see the icon, you can open the Settings app by clicking the Start menu button and clicking the gear icon just above the Start menu button.
  3. Click to select the Update & Security section and navigate to the Windows Security tab. From the top of the window, click the Open Windows Defender Security Center option.

Windows 10 Settings
  1. When Windows Defender Security Center opens, click on the shield icon below the home icon, open Virus & threat protection settings and turn off Real-time protection and Cloud-based protection in order to disable Defender.
  2. Navigate to the browser icon (second from the of the right-side menu) and turn off the Check apps and files option.

UAC prompt after disabling Windows Defender
  1. This will disable Defender while you install the mod which is giving you the problems. Don’t forget to revert the changes you have made during these steps as this leaves your computer unprotected.

The second part of this solution is actually making NMM run with admin permissions on your computer. This is usually not recommended for third-party apps but NMM is a verified tool.

  1. You will first have to locate NMM’s installation folder on your computer. The best way would be to right-click the tool’s shortcut on Desktop or anywhere else and choose Open file location from the menu. You can also simply check under C >> Program Files or C >> Program Files (x86) as that is the default folder for the installation
  2. Anyway, once inside the installation folder, you should be able to see a file named Nexus Mod Manager and it should be an Executable file. Right-click this file and choose Properties from the context menu.
  3. Navigate to the Compatibility tab in the Properties window and make sure you check the box next to the “Run this program as an administrator” setting.

Run this program as an administrator
  1. Apply the changes you have made and try repeating the installation process to see if the “a problem occurred during install” message appears again.

Solution 2: Get the Latest Version of NMM

It appears that The Nexus decided to drop support for the tool and it moved on to become a GitHub project where the old NMM developers are still releasing new builds. The common NMM versions from the site contain this error but they managed to fix it in the newest build. You might need to uninstall the old version of NMM first as drastic changes may have been made.

  1. First of all, make sure you have logged in with an admin account as you won’t be able to uninstall programs using any other account privileges.
  2. You shouldn’t lose the mods you have installed as the uninstall process clearly states that the mods will stay intact no matter what you do.
  3. Click on the Start menu and open Control Panel by searching for it or by typing “control.exe” inside a Run dialog box which can be opened with the Win Key + R key combination. Alternatively, you can click on the gear icon in order to open the Settings app if you are using Windows 10.

Running Control Panel from Command Prompt
  1. In Control Panel, select to View as: Category at the top right corner and click on Uninstall a Program under the Programs section.
  2. If you are using the Settings app on Windows 10, clicking on the Apps section should immediately open a list of all installed programs on your PC.

Apps opens the list of all installed programs

Apps opens the list of all installed programs
  1. Locate the Nexus Mod Manager entry on the list and click on it once. Click on the Uninstall button above the list and confirm any dialog boxes which may appear. Follow the instructions on-screen in order to uninstall NMM and restart your computer afterwards to complete the process.

Now you should download the latest version of NMM in order to complete this method.

  1. Click this link to navigate to the GitHub link where NMM is now stored and click the Nexus.Mod.Manager-0.65.10.exe link in order to start the download.

Downloading NMM from GitHub

Downloading NMM from GitHub
  1. Right-click on it from the Downloads folder nad choose open. Install it by following the instructions on-screen. Open it afterwards and check to see if the problem has disappeared.

Solution 3: Free up some Space on Your PC or Use a Different Partition

A lack of space may just be the problem you are facing when receiving this error. When you try to install mods, its size may grow up to 10 times as they are often highly compressed. There are mods which weigh 800MB originally but grow to take up 8GB of space.

That is why you should free up space on your computer for the installation to succeed. Firstly try deleting the files you don’t need such as downloaded installers. Try moving some of your documents to cloud. Uninstall programs you don’t use; especially games you no longer play as they tend to take up the most space. Try running the installation afterwards to see if the problem is gone.

Alternative: If you have a second partition or a second physical storage device connected to your computer, you can even change the folder where NMM will store extracted files from the mod. This is the problematic part as these files are deleted afterwards but you fail to install the game properly. Follow the steps below to change this setting to a different location!

  1. Open NMM by double-clicking its shortcut on the Desktop or by searching for it in the Start menu and clicking the first available choice. When its user interface opens, click the cog icon from the top menu in order to open its settings window.

NMM User Interface
  1. At the bottom of the settings window, you should see the Temporary Path Directory option. Minimize the window for now and navigate to a location where you have enough storage space available. Right-click this location open in File Explorer and choose New >> Folder and set its name to Temp.

NMM Settings Window
  1. Go back to the NMM Settings window and click the three dots button which should open the File Explorer. Navigate to the Temp folder you have created and choose it. Click OK and make sure you restart NMM afterwards. Check to see if the problem during installation still appears!

Solution 4: Install Mods in Safe Mode

This method is more of a workaround but if you receive this problem when installing a single mod or two, this may be the perfect choice as it’s quick and easy. Starting Windows in Safe Mode will disable certain items from starting up at all and it will load only basic things Windows needs to operate on startup and it’s a great way to troubleshoot the issue.

  1. This method is useful for version of Windows older than Windows 10. Use the Windows + R key combination on your keyboard in order to start the Run dialog box and type in “msconfig” before clicking OK.
  2. In the System Configuration window, navigate to the Boot tab to the right and check the box next to the Safe Boot entry. Click OK and restart your computer in order to boot into Safe Mode.

System Configuration window

System Configuration window
  1. If you are using Windows 10 on your PC, there is another way to access Safe Mode on your computer. Use the Windows Key + I key combination in order to open Settings or click the Start menu and click the gear key at the bottom left part.
  2. Click on Update & security >> Recovery and click the Restart Now option under the Advanced startup section. Your PC will proceed to restart and you will be prompted with the Choose an options screen.

Recovery tab in Windows 10 Settings
  1. Click the number 4 key or F4 in order to start your PC in Safe Mode on Windows 10.

Now that you have successfully navigated to Safe Mode after restarting your computer, you should run NMM and try to install the mod which was giving you the problem. Check to see if the same error appears again!

Windows 10

Windows

Windows 10

Windows 10.
