null

1. NTP.

2. DNS.

if you came across this post then you’ll probably had the problem that the vCenter installation became stuck around the 80%, with the text “Installing RPM This may take several minutes…”.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t take minutes but several hours until it figures out that it got an issue and it just stops. Like this screen:

VMware vCSA Deployment Error

After that, you won’t get a prompt to enroll the PSC, and if you open the console of the vm, you’ll see the following as well.

What this means is that you just got unlucky and that you most probably downloaded a bad ISO build. There are ways to fix this (you can patch the deployment), but honestly, it is much better to just download a different ISO build that doesn’t contain this issue and do the installation again. This way, you’re sure there are no weird or bad configuration issues that will stay behind, and you’re most probably also much quicker in finishing the deployment (on a normal way). VMware has covered this also in the following kb. https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/51124?docid=57387

According to the documentation, the root password had a 365day expiration date, but it keeps the build date as his point of time reference, not the initial time of the deployment. In the kb you can find the builds that are being affected with this issue. The build that I had that showed this issue was 6816762. Check the KB, so that you are sure you don’t have one of the problematic builds.

Ah well, at least you know now that it isn’t your fault, and that you can stop rechecking all your settings over and over again. Just like I did ??.

P.S.

If you get this error:

vCSA Deployment Error 2

Or This Error:

vCSA Deployment Error 1

Then it means that you don’t have properly set up your DNS, or that it cannot reach it.

In my case, I configured the wrong DNS server during installation, and apparently that doesn’t work ?. Only way to solve this, is to redeploy your appliance with the right IP settings. Other then that, if you forgot to create a DNS record before deployment, then you probably can still restore that, if the IP address of your DNS is correct, by rechecking the DNS during the Deployment of the PSC. And while we’re at it, selecting the wrong portgroup for the vm will give a similar effect.

So the sum it up, the following can ruin the deployment of your vCenter:

  • Wrong Network settings or DNS configured incorrectly
    • Wrong DNS server during deployement, no DNS record, wrong default Gateway
  • Wrong Portgroup selected or DNS is just not accessible through the selected network
  • Wrong ISO build
    • Check the kb before Deployment.

Hope this helps ?

Symptoms

vCenter 6.7 deployment failed with error «The installation of vCenter server failed due to an internal error.
This is an unrecoverable error. Please retry install.»

The installation of vcenter server failed due to an internal error

Reason :

Any of the below issues may lead to failure of vmware vcenter 6.7 and vcenter 7 deployment.

Vcenter FQDN is not resolving from DNS server.

DNS reverse lookup is not working for vcenter FQDN because PTR record is not created in DNS server.

DNS server is not reachable over port 53 because port 53 is not opened in firewall.

Resolution:

As perquisites, perform below task before deployment of vcenter.

1. Create DNS record with PTR record for vcenter server and static IP before starting installation of vcenter.

2. Test DNS forward lookup and reverse lookup with vcenter host name and IP using nslookup command before start deployment.

3. Ensure port 53 is open in firewall between vcenter ip and all DNS servers.

Once above prerequisites are configured, retry vcenter deployment again.

I’m getting an error «internal error» when trying to «Set up vCenter Server Appliance» as shown in the attached screenshot:
screenshot 1

It starts as shown in the second screenshot and then it throws the internal error, it looks like it’s failing to set the host name.

screenshot 2

I already checked /var/log/messages but there is nothing helpful there, is there any other log files that I need to check that might show the exact error?

The vCenter is installed on eSXI 6.

Having run into exactly this issue in my case it transpired that the DNS server that is set in the console of the appliance is the one used to look up the name. If the name won’t look up in that dns server you get this error. The DNS server that you set in the VCS appliance configuration screen (the one on https://vcs-appliance:5480) appears not to be used). You need to open the console in ESXi view of the virtual machine and set the DNS server there.

Of course if you specify an IP address for the host name this doesn’t happen because it doesn’t look the host name up in DNS.

Not to say that that is the only reason you may see the error but it’s enough in itself.

You need to enable DNS resolve. open port TCP /UDP 53 from the VCSA ip to your DNS servers

On ESX Server console config DNS was «auto».
i went back to vcenter console [F2] and configured my DNS server IP there (changed auto) and went back do the «Set up vCenter Server Appliance» . Now the setup pulled my config and went ahead to succeed.

OK i found the «solution» at least it workds for me !
When you want to use IP address for the name just put «localhost» in the name field not the IP address that is already in the IP address field ! This way the installer will not fail with «internal error» during DNS checks.
I figured this out since «localhost» was present when i first entered the GUI config on port 4080 after having filled all information when deploying from the OVA.
Hope it will work for you this is my 2 cents :)

VMware vCenter Server requires Windows Server 2008 SP2 or later. vCenter Server cannot be installed on a Domain Controller.

VMware-viclient-all-5.5.0-1281650.exe /VSKIP_OS_CHECKS="1"

This is on my nerves for days now after I have tried to deploy latest vCenter Server to Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012 R2. Both fresh installations with nothing more than just the vCenter Server requirements installed.
Info:

  • Firewall disabled
  • UAC disabled
  • Administrator used for installation
  • 1 NIC
  • NSLOOKUP working OK (forward/reverse)

Things I’ve tried:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 / 2012 R2
  • PostgreSQL (embedded) / MsSQL 2012 Express
  • Short file name creation enabled (NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation to 0)
  • In and out of C:Program Files
  • With and without computer being added to AD domain
  • Clean up all %TMP% / %TEMP% traces of vCenter install then try again
  • With and without VMware Tools

All the different combinations from above give the same result, error code 1603. This is obviously a generic OS error code when something goes wrong with the MSI installation package and gives 0 meaningful information.

Further drilling down into vCenter installation log files all I see is this:

I have looked everywhere but for some reason in this version of vCenter the vpxd.log file is not created.
Nothing meaningful in Event Viewer (Application) either.

I was exploring the capabilities of the tool for our lab environment but this is just ridiculous.

Any hint you can throw at me is greatly appreciated as I am out of ideas guys..

Cheers!

FAILED TO START SERVICES. FIRSTBOOT ERROR

VMWARE VCSA 7 , 6.5, 6.7 VCENTER APPLIANCE INSTALLATION PROBLEM (FAILED TO START SERVICES. FIRSTBOOT ERROR.)

The installation successfully completes stage 1, but not complete 2nd stage.
If we retry we will get the same error

Solution

We should have forward and reverse entries in domain controller.

This issue always comes if we are using static IP configuration or wrong domain entries.

Add this entry in vcsa’s hosts file and you are good to go. Once the configuration complete you can later add the vcsa in domain without any problems

VMware vCenter Service SSH login
Once stage 1 completes
Open a console to the appliance, enable SSH
On the appliance, echo ":: 1 localhost.localdom localhost" >> /etc/hosts

You can also wait till stage 2 is at 2%, and then add ” echo “::1 localhost.localdom localhost” >> /etc/hosts”.

Also, if you are facing the same issue update vcenter host entry in /etc/hosts file
