If you go to Windows->Settings/Plugins->Plugin Manager can you check and make sure you have Unfold3d enabled?
If it is already enabled, you’ll want to uncheck it then recheck and try to unwrap.

Hi all, posted a little while back regarding an error I kept getting when trying to use Unfold 3D (Unfold/Optimize is pretty much what I use for all UVing and it was driving me nuts that I kept getting a red error «unfold 3D error.») Just reporting this seems to now have been fixed in Maya 2019 SP3 — have just been using unfold/optimize on meshes I used to get the error on and they work great.

Uv unfolding is not working.
I’ve tried the entire day to make the uv unfold in the uv texture editor work in maya.
But everytime I try the uv don’t unfold at all. Not even a tiny bit…
Do anyone know what can cause that?
This has never happend before…
(edit) It seems to be able to unfold on the neck.
But the head… No way…

He unfolds after I converted the model to smooth.
But now the poly count is so high…. -_-

But why post images of the model not the uv problem. When your unfolding are you doing it in both axes, if so i find doing one at a time helps.

Maya Unfold/Optimize not working
Have been trawling the net and pretty sure its based on the fact that I have a Ryzen 3900x CPU installed, causing conflict (another thread with the same issue: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/maya-forum/unfold3d-process-error/td-p/8679506 ) Also works absolutely fine on my work PC, just not at home. I should add I’ve also updated the PC’s BIOS and downloaded the latest chipset drivers, but still same issue.
Has anyone had similar problems to this/found a work around? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you get this error every time, or just on a certain mesh?

New Ryzen cpu does not support the unfold in maya. Think there is a fix in maya2020.1

@throttlekitty — Not every time, just on certain meshes that have more complexity than say the primitives, cubes, spheres etc. It could also be to do with non-manifold geometry, but have run clean up and didn’t seem to find any errors. When I extract polys from a mesh, say separate a hand from the body, the piece then unfolds fine — just not when they are one single contiguous mesh.
@oglu — Can confirm still happens on 2020.1.

Spilt the mesh in half and try to unfold both pieces. If one fails split that in half unfold those pieces and so on.

i checked the release notes. Looks like the fix is not in 2020.1

@sprunghunt Have done so, seemed to work after splitting off the hands for example. Only issue is how to find bad geo — I have ran cleanup with all settings and still doesn’t show any bad/non-manifold geometry.
Edit: The weird thing is, Unfold along U and V works great, just not the actual Unfold function Would be nice to be able to use Optimize as well, but for now just using the legacy version.

I found this in an Autodesk forum, it works for Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, Ryzen 9, and Ryzen Threadripper!
«I took a closer look and it looks like it is using some kind of 2017 version of Unfold (assuming by the name of the new file that appeared in bin folder of Update 3)
There are two new files in Update 3 for Maya 2019:
unfold3dlib.dll — 99.8MB — sha1 a9799263f360ed3c860980c986aefd5031fe0591
UnfoldShim2017.exe — 122kB — sha1 38a508efe9df78ab8b8f4bfc54edac7628bdc48c
So there is a way how to run Unfold3D in Maya 2020.1 now (if you are running on Ryzen or Threadripper):
1. download and extract unfold.rar
2. copy and replace files in C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2020\bin
(UnfoldShim2017.exe is already renamed to UnfoldShim.exe, so you just need to replace the file, consider backup the original.»

Yo! Just wanted to say thanks for this post, i don’t use Ryzen, have a 1080gtx and randomly while modeling i try to use unfold and all these errors popped up saying a .dll was missing, and after googling the error i found this post and the fix worked for it as well. Thanks again!

With some AMD CPUs (for example 3900X) you can’t use the current Unfold algorithm in Maya.
The error message is: // Error: Unfold3D process error. //
- Open the Maya.env file (inside the Documents/maya/#versionNumber folder).
- Add this environment variable to fix this issue:
MAYA_USE_ALTERNATE_UNFOLD_SHIM = 1

Maya Unfold/Optimize not working
Hi all, have got a very niche issue so not sure if anyone will be able to help, but would be great if anyone can pitch in. Whenever trying to use the Unfold/Optimize features of the Maya UV editor on a mesh I am now constantly getting a «// Error: Unfold3D process error» message. The features do work when unwrapping on simple objects like a cube, sphere, etc. but on more complex geometry it seems to get errors.

Сначала думал, проблема в моем неумении делать развертки. Пересмотрел несколько уроков… делаю как говорят. Но результат один — утка, после разметки и нажатия кнопки Unfold разрывается на отдельные полигоны. Причем как на развертке, так и сам меш. И самое странное, если бы проблема касалась только Unfold, я бы свалил всё на битый *.obj файл, но… оригинальная моделька, в *.mb то есть в Maya — тоже разрывается на отдельные полигоны. Кароче попа…
Кто не совсем понял суть проблемы, см. видео.
Есть подозрение на использование инструмента Boolean в процессе моделирования. Хотя вроде раньше с ним проблем не возникало.
Это потому, что анфолд пытается клинапить геометрию. Вообще главное правило майщика — «чисть хистори», тем более после булевых. Нужно проверить модель на наличие лишних вертексов, эджей и полигонов, удалить всё лишнее, свелдить всё что нужно и тогда разворачивать.
Разобрался я со своей уткой. Спасибо за совет проверить модельку клинапом. Не додумался бы сам. Он выругался почти на всю модель. Я хотел сделать её слегка пушистой и для этого почти из всех ребер выдавил плоскости, почти параллельно основной её поверхности. Поэтому она выглядит, на видео, немного похожей на елочку. Эти односторонние полигоны оч. не понравились майе. Результат буля тоже дал ошибку с геометрией. Кароче, теперь удалил ей этот «пушок». Клинап вроде больше не ругается и модель разворачивается адекватно.
Тема пусть останется, если кому-нибудь вдруг будет интерсен ответ на подобный вопрос.
нужно понимать что делает анфолд.. он разворачивает юв, и если каждый полигон по какой то причине не является частью единого куска то анфолд раскидает это так как происходит у тебя. Случается это не так часто и сопряжено с разными манипуляциями с булином или копированием атрибутов с одного объекта на другой.
Как исправить… создаешь юв.. просто создаешь обычный планар мапинг — не важно с какой проекции. Так ты говоришь майке что все полики это часть одного куска. После этого размечаешь как надо режешь и разворачиваешь анфолдом
А что за урок по развертке? Может кто нибудь накидать уроков по развертке в maya? Буду придельно благодарен.

Unless you are actually using Unfold3D to cut the mesh ? About the 100K mesh, usually theses kind of meshes can be unfolded in far less time. I suppose that your meshes contains special topology. Can you post a screen shoot of it please ? Cheers |

And yes, it contains one handle (as far as I saw) in the middle of its legs: close up: location (look inside the mesh volume): You’ll have to cut your model so that it doesn’t contains any handles. Suches triangulated models need to be carefully cut into pieces to be correctly unfolded. Also, an important thing: try disabling the «prevent self intersection» when unfolding. Cheers |

If you had the ability to move borders in realtime, while keeping two endpoints, that would be a huge timesaver. Similar to how Google maps lets you select different routes by dragging the path. It would be nice if you highlighted problem geometry. I would not call the results you achieved good quality for what I am doing. I need the absolute minimum number of islands(charts). I want to use the texture coordinates for normal maps, so any discontinuity that is not on an inward geometry fold will show. The shoulder would be particularly noticeable. Ideally, you should not see any discontinuity in the checkerboard pattern on the model. Is there a way to reduce discontinuity across islands and keep the borders on geometry seams? Did you encounter any of the errors that I saw? Also, I don’t see the «prevent self intersection» option in the plugin. |

And yes, the realtime option like in google map would be a nice feature, the highlihting one also. We are working on things like that for the standalone version of Unfold3D. Its clearly perfectible. Actually I used an automatic system that I am currently developping for finding seams, and it took me like 30 seconds to have that result using it. Idealy we would need to have an automatic seam creation algorithm that use occlusion maps as mask to attract seams on hidden parts and the «white areas» of the occlusion map should be protected from seam presence. We are also working on this . For the moment the only option you have under Maya is using the shortest path finding tool… I know thats not ideal but things will change in the future. The errors you are repporting are linked to the 2016 Maya plugin of Unfold3D. For the next version of Maya we put our algorithms into a library and this is the Maya team that does the integration into Maya 2017. So for the future you should repport problem like that one to Autodesk, since they actually doing the bug correction on their side. On my side, I will do not touch the Maya UI anymore. Френды нужно разобраться в проблеме. Может кто сталкивался. При использовании unfold3d майка уходит в депрессию (зависает), в строке процесса увисает на 1 или 16 процентах просчета развертки. Заранее благодарю. Maya2015

Сложно. Не сталкивался с таким. Бывали вылеты. Помогала чистка истории перед использованием unfold3d

Тоже не сталкивалась, но на всякий случай посоветовала бы проверить геометрию на наличие висящих вертексов, многоугольников, двойных фейсов.

Спасибо за ответы. Решение найдено. Попробовал те же манипуляции с моделью на ноутбуке (более слабый, нежели ББ) проблема не обнаружено , все моментом развернуло. После полной переустановки майки и на ПК все заработало. Ну а проблема таки встречается на просторах зарубежного нета, так что у меня не первый случай.
