Ошибка c000003a при операции обновления

An Intel HDMI Compute Stick clone: HANNSPREE Quanta running Windows 8.1 with Bing, upgraded to Windows 8.1 Prof w media centre.

I like the stick as it takes little space when I want a clear desk.

I had to reinstall everything using the image provided by seller which is time consuming.

My question: how to avoid a repeat of the error?

As this is a very proprietary system (uses a 32 bit uefi on a 64 bit capable device running Windows 32 bit) it is not possible to boot a repair dvd for it.

I could access a dos prompt with the imaging usb app, but dism.exe did not work until I deleted pending.xml in …/winsxs

anyways even that didn’t work either, so I had to re-image & reinstall everything.

So what is the update to avoid so as not to get a non functional HDMI stick with error: Fatal error c000003a applying update operation after running updates on Windows 8.1

PS I went through the acrobatics of installing Windows 10 on it, it was painful, but I prefer the OS it was designed for which is 8.1

• The virtual disk is all that matters. Just turn off the VM and attach that virtual disk to a new VM. See if that works. Could have some corruption in the VM, but it’s as easy as just spinning up a new one with that disk attached.

  What?  How would that help if the VM is a bootable copy of Windows Server?  I mean, that could help you get the data from it, but not make it run.

  Same spot, which makes sense. It is a Windows error not a VM issue. I’m hoping to get around this error without doing a restore, but not looking like it.

• When you start it up again can you press F8 for the boot menu?  You may be able to choose a better option from there.

  An option that requires booting into Windows, safe mode or other, won’t get past the update error.

  Just press F8 to bring up the Advanced Boot Options.

  Select Safe Mode and press Enter. This will open Windows Server 2012 in Safe Mode.

  Can’t boot into safe mode, see above. It got the error even attempting safe mode. Didn’t have anymore time to troubleshoot, restored from previous night backup.

  Ran out of time to troubleshoot, ended up attaching datastore to another VM to grab data that had been changed that day and restored from previous nights backup.
