Thank you. I know I didn’t trigger the brake override system, as I have a 6-speed, and my left foot is always on or near the clutch. Toyota service dept. just informed me it’s a computer issue and they will need to replace the computer.

What year is your truck? I thought they worked that issue out by 2017 but could be wrong.

  8. I’ve seen this before and the customer swore that he never pushes the brake and accellerator pedal at the same time. Toyota’s techstream can look at the event that caused the code to set and we counted 40 events of both pedals pressed at the same time. Obviously this is not the OP’s issue.

Brake and gas pushed at same time? Shouldn’t this be in the 50+ thread?

Your fos and have no idea what your talking about. This is a defect truck and came on after waking up to go to work in morning. Drove home fine night before. If you have no clue what your talking about it’s best to not say anything at all.

Sorry all worked up because this pos error and miss my truck. Sorry for calling ya out didmt mean any harm.

  15. Per chance, did anyone get a definitive answer to what may cause this error? Went to fas station to get something to drink, tried to turn on the vehicle and then got this error. Completely infuriating really. Got the car towed to dealer and am apprehensive because I don’t see that there is a definitive root cause.
    Thanks in advance,

Mine came on when using the pedal commander and switching between settings while car was on and in gear. After turning ignition on an off six times at dealer system was reset and good to go.

  17. Thanks for the info. I do have the pedal commander, but wasn’t switching the settings. Turned off to go into gas station, then turned on without touching the pedal commander. Should I take out the pedal commander before the dealership sees it? Afraid of some cockamamey excuse and/or discussion on voiding warranty, etc.

    Thanks again…appreciate the reply.

Did you try turning on an off 6 times to reset the system before taking to dealer. I reinstalled mine after and haven’t had any issues. Showing them would be your choice I’m not sure if it could void warranty using.

A brake override malfunction is a phenomenon that occurs in a car when there is a conflict between the accelerator and brakes.

It happens when a brake pedal loses its ability to respond as soon as you press it.

Many brake override malfunctions occur due to technical glitches, but drivers also cause some.

Brake Override Malfunction Causes

Although this issue is not very common, it can lead to unfortunate consequences if not appropriately addressed.

Read on to find out the possible causes of brake overdrive malfunction. It includes warnings, symptoms, joint problems, and solutions for different cars.

Reasons For Brake Override Malfunction And Their Solutions

If your vehicle’s braking system is well maintained, there is little chance of this problem occurring.

But if your car has been in a collision before, there is a high probability that this problem will occur if it was not checked for any defaults on the sensors.

Here are some of the reasons behind this malfunction:

Faulty Brake Pressure Sensor

A faulty brake pressure sensor can send false signals to the brakes through the Electronic Control Unit.

That way, it can tell them to cut off engine power even though the brakes have not been applied.

It can be dangerous because drivers lose control of their vehicles when the engine shuts off.

Signs Of A Faulty Brake Pressure Sensor

  • Even after lifting your foot off the pedal, the brake light stays on.
  • The brake light fails to turn on even with your foot on the brakes pedal (unless it is a burnt-out bulb).

Solution

If the sensor is faulty, it will have to be replaced. It, however, should only be tested and replaced by a trained mechanic.

Faulty ABS Module

The ABS module contains several components responsible for keeping your car from skidding and sliding when you have to brake hard.

When one of these components in the ABS module fails, it can cause a brake override malfunction.

When it happens, your ABS can override your regular brakes, making it nearly impossible for you to stop your vehicle. It can be so bad if an accident is imminent.

Signs Of A Faulty ABS Module

  • The vehicle’s brakes feel Spongy when you apply them.
  • Your vehicle doesn’t stop as quickly as usual.
  • ABS light stays illuminated on the dashboard.
  • Your car has trouble starting or strange noises from the brake area.

Solution

It is best to let trained personnel diagnose the failure from the ABS module and get the whole module replaced.

Otherwise, the problem might continue appearing or even result in a more deadly state.

Airbag Sensor Failure

The airbag sensor monitors information from several sensors to deploy the airbags in an accident.

If the airbag sensor fails, it sends information about its malfunction to the car’s computer.

The computer then shuts down both brake override and airbag systems as a safety precaution.

In this case, both systems are being shut down because of a failure in just one sensor.

It can lead to further safety issues since now the car is without its primary braking system. Of course, it puts drivers at greater risk during an emergency stop.

Signs Of An Airbag Sensor Failure

  • The airbag warning light comes on while you’re driving.
  • After a collision, the airbags do not deploy.
  • The Check Engine light flashes on and off.

Solution

While sensor failure can occur, it is also possible that there is a wiring problem with control modules.

It can also be from the control module to an ignition circuit in your car.

It would be best to have an expert diagnose your airbag system and determine why it is not working correctly.

However, most probably, you may have to replace the airbag sensors.

Foot On Both Pedals (Gas And Brake)

The brake override safety feature will take over if the gas and brake pedals are hit simultaneously. It will cause the engine to die and slow down the vehicle.

It can be a lifesaver, as it helps to avoid accidents and even death.

However, sometimes this system malfunctions and has been known to cause accidents by itself.

Solutions

The driver should try their best not to step on both pedals simultaneously when driving. It is dangerous for your car and you; it is easy to get hurt.

Brake Override Malfunction Solutions

Faulty Key Fob

Key fobs allow drivers of modern cars to open and close their car doors from a distance.

Upon pressing START on a push-button start vehicle, the system gets a signal from the key fob.

It then checks your foot position for detection that you have your foot on the brake. After that, it sends a start signal to the vehicle’s computer, telling it to start up.

If there is an issue with the keyfob’s signal, it can cause the brake override to malfunction. So the system will not get the signal that your foot is on the brake.

So it will not allow you to start your vehicle.

Solution

Any number of things could cause this problem. If you notice that your key fob is cracked or damaged, replace it immediately.

If you are using a case with your key fob, try taking it off and see if that helps. You can also try moving other electronic devices away from your key fob.

It may mean moving them away from your purse or pocket and seeing if that helps fix the problem.

If none of these works, you may need to contact your car manufacturer or certified mechanic.

Defective Cruise Control

When you turn on your cruise control, it will accelerate until you tell it to stop.

When the cruise control isn’t working correctly, it can’t receive enough information from all of its sensors.

If one of these sensors is broken, it can be problematic for getting accurate information.

If you press down hard enough on the brake pedal with the cruise on, your car will not respond correctly.

It is like braking hard in traffic jams or heavy rain because its sensors aren’t working correctly.

Solution

If you’re lucky, the problem is a fuse or a defective brake light switch. You have to find the fuse box (usually under the dashboard) and replace it.

However, it’s not always that easy. Some cars have a relay for the cruise control that’s separate from the other electrical parts of the car.

If this relay goes bad, it might be cheaper to replace it than to repair it. However, a trained mechanic will know what is best to do.

How To Reset Brake Override Malfunction In Various Car Models

Have you ever tried to brake, only for your car to keep accelerating? This horrifying experience clearly shows that your car has a severe problem that needs fixing fast.

But, it can be challenging to do so.

Luckily, you can use a few tricks to reset the brake override malfunction in almost any car. Some of the solutions may temporarily fix the issue.

It may, however, depend on the model of your car.

Toyota

Different Toyota models may have similar or different approaches to reset this function. So, to reset it, you need to locate your engine’s fuse box.

Some Toyota cars have this fuse just beside the driver pedals on the door side. However, there is no exact location for this fuse box.

You may have to check your manual to know the location of the engine fuse box. Most cars come with two fuse boxes – engines and boot fuse boxes.

Once you get the engine fuse box, check for fuse number 4 in the drop-down list. The fuse is written [STOP].

So once you change it, your car should be good to go.

All Car Models Reset Trick

Disconnect the battery terminals, starting with the negative terminal first and then the positive.

Connect the two cables and hold them in place for 15 minutes. Don’t worry; this won’t affect anything in the car because you haven’t connected the battery power.

So holding this terminal together aims to reset all the modules and other accessories in your car.

With the cables still in connection, turn the headlights knob in your car to full. It will help draw all the power from the car entirely, fastening the resetting procedure.

After 15 minutes, plug the cables back into the battery, starting with the positive first and then the negative. You will see some sparks, but that is nothing to worry about.

When the battery terminals are well connected in position, start your car and note the difference.

So this is a procedure you can successfully do on any vehicle model, and it will work fully.

Conclusion

Brake overrides malfunctions sometimes result from the minor issues you would think of.

It is, however, best that, in case it happens, you try to maintain control of your vehicle to a stop.

The above reset trick for all cars works when you are sure there’s no leak or physical problem.

If the vehicle fails to react as you expected, it is best to visit a professional mechanic.

A brake override forces vehicles to slow down under abnormal circumstances. Sometimes there’s an issue with the braking system and the brake override no longer works. You cannot fix the brake override malfunction; you can temporarily turn it off.

What is a brake override malfunction?

Seeing the words brake override malfunction is a nightmare for most drivers around the world. The last thing a driver wants to experience is their brakes malfunctioning, especially if they are driving fast.

A brake override malfunction is not an issue that you should take lightly. The second you see that there’s an issue wrong with your brakes, cancel everything you have to do for the day and take your vehicle to a mechanic.

But what is a brake override?

What is a brake override malfunction?

A brake override malfunction happens when the braking system cannot take control of the braking system and slow down the vehicle to prevent a collision.

Sensors are placed all around the braking system and these sensors are connected to the gas pedal and the brake pedal. The sensors are constantly providing feedback to the braking system.

When a driver starts driving erratically, due to circumstances in or out of their control, they may slam on the gas pedal and brake pedal at the same time, in an attempt to slow down their car. When the sensors alert the braking system to these erratic changes, it will trigger the braking override.

The braking override system’s goal is to ignore all other acceleration commands and slow the vehicle down. The braking override is an automatic system, and it can be turned on or off at the driver’s command.

What happens when the braking overrides malfunctions and can it be fixed?

What happens when the braking overrides malfunctions and can it be fixed?

When the brake overrides malfunctions, the system cannot automatically apply the brakes and slow down the vehicle. When the brake override is not functioning, the driver is more likely to get into an accident.

The braking override will malfunction for a few reasons. Luckily, each of these reasons can be fixed.

● If there is an issue with the brake pressure sensor – when the brake pressure sensor is not working correctly, it can send false signals to the braking system. Depending on the type of false signals it sends, the brake override system can suddenly turn on the brakes, even if the vehicle is not moving.

In other circumstances, the pressure sensor can send full signals so that the vehicle does not apply the braking system in circumstances that normally would.

How to fix the pressure sensor – a mechanic must test each pressure sensor in the system and find which one is not working. After it is found, it needs to be replaced.

● The airbag sensor is not working – what does an airbag sensor have to do with the brakes? The braking system and the airbag system relay information between each other.

If there is a faulty airbag sensor, then it may shut down the airbag system and the brake override system. If there’s an issue with the airbag, then you will see an airbag warning light on the dashboard.

How to fix the airbag sensor – the sensors and the wires connecting the sensor to the battery must be tested. There could be multiple issues causing the airbag sensor to fail.

The mechanic should also run a test over the entire airbag system to check for any other faults that have not been detected yet. But, like most sensors, they will have to be replaced if they are damaged.

● The Key FOB is faulty – many of the key fobs for today’s cars can turn on the engine of a car with the click of a button. The driver does not have to be inside or put the key in the ignition.

Key FOB is faulty

But if the key fob isn’t working correctly, it may prevent you from starting your vehicle’s engine. It will also send signals to the braking system that show you have your foot on the brakes, even if you’re not in the car.

How to fix a defective key fob – try to replace the batteries and clean any residue off of the key fob. If you decide to replace your key phone, you will have to visit a mechanic or a dealership that works directly with your vehicle’s manufacturer.

They can provide you with a new key fob and program it to your vehicle. Replacing a key fob will cost around $50 and $100.

Is there a way to override the brake override malfunction?

Is there a way to override the brake override malfunction?

Yes, there is a way to override the brake override system and turn it off. But you will not have the automatic braking system to help you if you need it.

In order to shut off the override system, turn on the vehicle and allow it to run. Then, sit in the driver’s seat and then press the brake pedal and then the gas pedal. Hold each of the pedals down for 15 seconds. Be sure to count out 15 seconds to yourself.

There may not be a light showing that the brake override is off. But if you counted to 15 seconds, then it should be off.

After you have turned the brake override system off, drive slowly and be more cautious than ever before.

How to maintain your vehicle’s braking system

Maintaining the many parts of your vehicle’s braking system is the best way to ensure that you don’t have brake problems in the future. It is integral that you learn when you should replace your brake pads and drain and replace the braking fluid.

How to maintain your vehicle’s braking system

Here are three fundamental rules to good brake system maintenance.

  1. Every 12,000 miles, have your brakes serviced and replace the brake pads.
  2. Your vehicle’s braking fluid needs to be replaced every 25,000 miles. Braking fluid attracts moisture, which can corrode many parts of the braking system in record time.
  3. If your vehicle is over 5 years old, it may be time to think about upgrading the braking system. Most car companies are constantly working on their vehicles’ braking systems to improve them and keep their drivers safe.

Ask your car’s manufacturer if there are any upgrades available for your vehicle’s braking system.

Conclusion

A defective key fob and broken brake pressure or airbag sensors can prevent the breaking override system from activating when it says. Be sure to take your vehicle in for routine brake maintenance and replace your brake pads every 12,000 miles.

Есть два предположения:
1. перегорела лампочка «стоп»;
2. глючит контакт лягушки под педалью тормоза.

Прокладка какая-то нарисована🤣

Просто скинь клемму и уйдёт

BRAKE OVERRIDE MALFUNCTION

Hello all,

I’ve have my Hilux for just over a year now and have been on the forum for some time but this is my first post.

I had an electrical issue over the weekend and was not able to find any info so I thought I would share.

I was out four wheel driving over the weekend and gave the lux a reasonable workout. A river crossing and some dry creek crossings that required low range and the use of traction control, which worked extremely well. In the middle of nowhere I got a dash alert telling me something wasn’t quite right.
Image
[WARNING SIGN]️ BRAKE OVERRIDE MALFUNCTION VISIT YOUR DEALER
everything seemed to be working properly except every time I braked it would beep and display the message. I stopped the car and checked under the bonnet and underneath for a possible cause. Everything seemed in order. I went drive off again but the transmission was locked in Park. I used the manual override to get it out of Park and did a brake test to check the brakes and ABS, which both worked as normal, however the traction control light and ABS warning light activated. After reading the the manual, disconnecting the battery for half an hour, to no avail and 300km from town with no mobile reception I didn’t have much choice and made my way home. On the way I had a new message appear
Image
I made it home without any issues and with the dealer closed for the long weekend decided to try and rectify the fault. After some time it finally dawned on me to check the fuses. Damn I wish I thought of that sooner. I located the culprit fuse in the engine bay, labelled of all things ‘Brake’. I replaced the fuse and everything is all good.
Image
Image
No fault messages, no lights and everything working.

Just thought I would pass this on in case someone comes across the same issue.

BRAKE OVERRIDE MALFUNCTION

Postby Myralga on Mon, 06 Aug 2018 8:20 +0000

I had similar warning light on my old 07 (they didn’t have a digital display like the new ones.) ABS and Traction control.
For me my fault came (twice) from a snapped abs wiring harness on the rear Diff both times it happened in Long grass pig chasing. Would not surprise me if the wires touched that the fuse would blow.
Not saying your fault is the same just a similar issue.
And worth a look for anyone coming across this thread in the future.
The wires on the rear Diff are very exposed certainly a possible cause. (And both times my dealer had the part on the shelf telling me it might be more common then expected.)

Thanks very much for this post, it has been a real saviour. I’m currently 500km out of Perth, WA on an outback station. I have to get to Perth tomorrow to catch a flight to Brisbane as my mum is in palliative care and on her last days and this problem, exactly as you described, occurred. I had given up hope until a Google Search lead me to your post, replaced the fuse and we are on the road again.

Thanks very much again.

Re: BRAKE OVERRIDE MALFUNCTION

NofishNT and gentoopeng, just reaching out to determine the root cause of your brake fuses blowing so it doesn’t happen again.

What trailer wiring harness do you have installed (if any)? Genuine Toyota or generic/aftermarket? I have seen some real shonky trailer wiring over the years, and wouldn’t be surprised if a generic/aftermarket trailer wiring installation was your issue.

Cheers.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It is really a rescue to many people. I am a Mechanic and a car (Toyota Pick-up 2017) was brought to me to fix the dashboard light for brake override. I didn’t have any idea of where to start until I come up to this post!! I checked the fuse and it was blown, replaced it and everything is fixed. Now they are cheering me as a pro!!

How’s your wheel alignment
I knocked mine out in some rocky river crossings a few years back and had the same warning lights
