What is FTP 550 error?

Firstly, let’s get a quick idea on the FTP 550 error.

The 5xx error falls under the permanent negative completion reply status of the FTP server. And, it means that the FTP server did not accept the command and the requested action did not take place. Further more, x5x error denotes File system errors in FTP server.
Overall, the 550 error means the file was not found or there are access restrictions for the file.

Causes for “FTP 550 no such file or directory”

Recently, one of our customers reported trouble with FTP upload. The logs of his FTP session looked as shown below.

STATUS:> Transferring file "/mydir/home.html"...
COMMAND:> SIZE home.html
550 home.html: No such file.
STATUS:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access).
COMMAND:> CWD /mydir/home.html
550 /mydir/home.html: No such file or directory.

Here, the customer was trying to PUT the file home.html via FTP. And that resulted in the error.

Now, let’s see the top causes for the error.

1. Incorrect path

Usually, “FTP 550 no such file or directory” error happens when the customers try to upload files from the wrong directory.

For example, when the file is present in the folder /home/user/abc.html, an attempt to upload from the path /home will cause this error.

This error also happens when customer uses the relative path in FTP.

2. Permission problems

Similarly, wrong permission on the files or folders can also cause this 550 error. When the user do not have privileges on the file they are trying to access, it will report the 550 error.

Additionally, a typo in the file name will also lead to this error.

3. Wrong Mount points

Again, we often see FTP 550 errors when users trying to access files in the mounted file systems.

For instance, recently a customer complained about the problems accessing files via FTP. In his server, he had a mounted file system. But, this mount failed after a server reboot. And, when he tried to access a file in this mounted directory, it resulted in the error:

550 : No such file or directory

How to fix FTP 550 error?

Till now, we saw the various causes for the FTP 550 error. Let’s now have a look on how to fix it.

We already know that the underlying reason for the FTP 550 error could be file not residing at the path.

If the file is not found on the path, we advise customer on the correct path. Or, for file name typo issues, we educate customer on the exact file name.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a standard network protocol used to transfer files between clients and servers. It is the fastest way to upload your file on the server. If you are using CyberPanel, you can also use File manager, but it is always recommended to use FTP to transfer large files to your server. However, as with any other software people face an issue with FTP as well. In this tutorial will discuss one FTP error called ‘FTP 550 No such file or directory’. This means file or folder does not exist. Today will see what are the main reasons behind this error and how to fix them.

What is FTP 550 No Such File or directory

We will first see what actually is FTP 550 No Such File or directory error.

5xx errors with FTP means complete rejection from the server. This means that your FTP client such as Filezilla sent an FTP command which remote server fails to accept and returns with 5xx families of error.

It is also related to File system issues, for example, the FTP users do not have access to the folder you are trying to access or upload content too.

What is the main cause of this error

1. Wrong Permissions

If your folder or files have wrong permissions this will also cause ‘FTP 550 No such file or directory’. This happens when the user does not have enough privileges to edit or open file they are trying to access. So if you are using CyberPanel avoid uploading files via root SFTP account, because those files will then be owned by root account and you can then can’t access those files via FTP.

If you have already done so, make sure to click Fix Permissions from the file manager. Or you can log in to ssh via root, then first find out the user of your website by running:

ls -la /home

This command will tell you the owner of the directory who owns your document root, you can then run following commands to change owners of your document root

chown -R user:user /home/domain.com

Also, this status code occurs when you try to GET a file that does not exist.

2. Incorrect Path

FTP 550 No such file or directory can also occur if you are trying to upload file to an incorrect path. Such as if the file is present in the document root of your site at /home/domain.com/public_html and you are trying to upload from /home.

The easiest way to get around the incorrect path is to logout from FTP, and log in again. You will then land in the default FTP folder and from there you can easily navigate to the folder you want to upload file to.

3. Wrong Mount Point

Sometimes users mount a filesystem at a certain mount point but they don’t configure it to retain after reboot. So after server reboot that mount point does not exist anymore. In such a case when they login to that FTP account they usually see 500: No such file or directory, because that mount point does not exist anymore.

Make sure to remount the file system and make it persists during the reboots.

How to Create FTP Account In Cloud Platform

Once the website is created, click on your service ID. You will be brought back to the page where you can manage your sites created in the CyberPanel.

Click the launch icon.

From the left sidebar, click Create FTP Account under FTP. Fill in all the details and click Create FTP button. You can leave the path empty and the default path will be used which is usually document root of the website (i.e. /home/domain.com). But if you set some path such as helloworld the final path will be relative to document root such as /home/domain.com/public_html/helloworld.

FTP Account is necessary to upload your website/application files. But if you are going to use our Auto Installer creating FTP account is not really necessary.

You can also use default File Manager of CyberPanel to manage files of your website, but for large uploads, FTP is recommended.

1. FTP error:

“550 Permission Denied” or “550 No Such File or Directory”

Quick fix

Many FTP users come across error message 550. As all 5xx errors, the “550 No such file or directory” error message is a permanent negative completion reply status of the FTP server. The requested action could not be processed, because the command was not accepted by the server. This problem has several possible causes, for example access restrictions for the requested file, an incorrect path, or mounted file systems.

To get rid of FTP error 550, check the path that you are using is correct and leads you to the requested file. If this is not the case, try using the absolute path of the file. If the error persists, check the mount points and make sure that the file system exists and that you have the permission to access it.

2. FTP error:

“530 User cannot log in” or “Home Directory Inaccessible”

Quick fix

The common FTP error 530 occurs when the user is trying to connect to the FTP server. It may occur with both anonymous and basic authentication and is usually accompanied by an error message such as “user cannot log in, home directory inaccessible” or “critical error: could not connect to server.”

There are two common causes and quick fix solutions for FTP error 530:

The user does not have access to the home directory. Go to the settings and make sure that the user can access the directory. This should solve the issue if it is caused by permission problems.
Another possible reason is that IIS is not configured to use passive mode FTP. Go to the settings and enter a port range and IP address on the page “IIS > Server name > FTP Firewall Support” to enable passive mode.

3. FTP error:

“425 Can’t Open Data Connection”

Quick fix

Are you facing FTP return code 425 or the error message “can’t open data connection”? Then you are dealing with a protocol level error stating that the data connection could not be established. This could be either the connection for a directory, for an upload, or for a download.

To fix the problem, try to change the settings for the active and passive mode. If this does not help, the FTP error 425 is probably caused by the SSL requirements on the server or by firewall settings. Another common FTP error is error 421 along with the error message “service not available.” This return code lets you know that there was a problem with the connection and your requested action. The range of 4xx errors are temporary conditions, meaning that the action may be requested again.

The most common reasons for error 421 to show up are invalid FTP hosts, firewall and anti-virus software restrictions, and service configuration errors. Depending on the cause, try the following steps to get rid of the bothering error message.

Invalid FTP host: Use the ping command to check the connection to the FTP host. If it does not respond, enter the correct hostname in the configuration files, then restart the network and try again.
Firewall restrictions: Disable your firewalls or anti-virus software, as they could be causing the problem. By disabling the applications, you can easily identify if they are the cause of the error or not.
Service configuration errors: If you have selected port 21 and this port is already occupied by a different application, this could result in error 421. In this case, check the service configuration, or change the port from 21 to 22.

6. FTP error:

“Connection Timed Out”

Timeout errors are common FTP return codes. The errors are indicated by messages such as “Connection times out after 20 seconds of inactivity.” If you are facing a time out error in your FTP client log, here is what you can do to solve the problem:

Go to the settings and change the connection timeout duration, for example from the default 20 seconds to 100 seconds. By increasing the duration, the server has more time to establish a connection before timing out. If the error persists, check for different possible causes. Depending on the cause, changing from passive to active mode, or vice-versa, can help you get rid of the problem. You can also try switching from SFTP to FTP, or to change the configuration settings in the FTP client account.

7. FTP error:

“EAI_NONAME” or “Neither nodename nor servname provided, or not known”

Quick fix

A failed EAI is a common problem among users of FileZilla or other FTP applications. The EAI errors are indicated by either of the two error codes “EAI_NODATA” or “EAI_NONAME.” Both errors lead to the result “Could not connect to server.”

8. FTP error:

“Bandwidth Usage is Restricted”

“Connection Error 10060” or “Socket Error 10061”

Quick fix

Both FTP error 10060 and error code 10061 refer to a problem with the connection to the remote server. In the case of error 10061, the connection is actively refused by the server. It is often difficult to find the causes of these types of FTP problems. However, some reasons cause this error more often than others, and can be fixed easily. If you are facing a connection error or socket error, try the following steps to resolve the issue.

Change the FTP host and port, as a spelling error in the FTP hostname or a wrong FTP port may lead to a connection error.
In some cases, the firewall or anti-virus software blocks the FTP connection. If this is the cause of the connection error, change the settings of your firewall accordingly or temporarily disable the application.
Some servers restrict passive FTP transfers. By changing the transfer type into active mode, you can allow the connection to the remote server.

FTP errors 10060 and 10061 can also be caused by a timeout. Change the timeout limit in the settings to make sure that the server has enough time to process your command and to send larger files.

I’m attempting to upload files to my remote server via FTP, but I continually get blocked from uploading files with «550 Permissions Denied».

The strange part is that it worked at first perfectly, an only now has it stopped working. The user I am logged into has the proper privileges, but I still can’t upload.

Any help?

I had the exact same issue with vsftpd. Error 550 no quota problems, no permissions problems but the error was still there. Uninstalled vsftpd, installed proftpd and everything worked like a charm…

A 550 Error means «Requested action not taken. File unavailable, not found, not accessible.» Since the file is available that means the server isn’t accessible. That most likely means one of the following:

You have used your Transfer Quota up, Tim Post suggusted this
You have used up your server space Quota
Your account has been locked by the hosting company due to some issue like not paying or a clerical mistake on their part (this happens)
Your host’s ftp server is having an authentication issue
Someone hacked your account or the ftp server. I have seen this happen but they weren’t able to change the ftp passwords.

Check with the hosting company to make sure you have not used up one of your Quotas. You should be able to do this through their website. If that isn’t the case then give them a call and let them know what is happening. They will be able to check your account and see if it is locked or having some kind of issue. Usually they will even reset your password for you if that is the issue for some reason. If this isn’t a quota issue then it is probably an issue on their site and contacting them is the fastest way to fix it.

Also, it would be helpful if you give us the name of your host. If you aren’t hosting then you need to log in to your remote server and check on your ftp server software. It has most likely had an error.

I am using Filezilla FTP Server. I was facing problem with Error message 550 Could not open file for writing.

I have removed the directories where the files are downloading. Not physically from the Hard Disk / Storage Media. Just Logically from the FileZilla User Directories assigning options.

And again assign the same directories. Also kick the current Session of transferring files. By Right Click on a particular IP and then you can select the option kick user.

It will quit transferring and withing 1-2 minute it will start downloading files and error will be removed.

Recently I was able to resolve the problem on CentOS 6.9 ISPConfig 3 VPS. It’s related to the folder ownership issue.

Using SSH, check your folder and files by running ls -l ownership.

Make sure that the folder is owned by the user and has the correct group. To change folder permission use chown -R web3:client4 /var/www/clients/client4/web3/web/

FTP is a simple method to upload files to the server.

Although, it is rather easy to transfer files, FTP users often get stuck with errors. One such FTP error is “550 No such file or directory“.

Broadly speaking, this error means that the file or folder do not exist.

As part of our Outsourced Technical Support Services, we regularly fix these type of FTP errors for our customers.

Today, we’ll see the causes for the error “FTP 550 no such file or directory” and how our Support Engineers fix them.

What is FTP 550 error?

Firstly, let’s get a quick idea on the FTP 550 error.

Causes for “FTP 550 no such file or directory”

Recently, one of our customers reported trouble with FTP upload. The logs of his FTP session looked as shown below.

STATUS:> Transferring file "/mydir/home.html"...
COMMAND:> SIZE home.html
550 home.html: No such file.
STATUS:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access).
COMMAND:> CWD /mydir/home.html
550 /mydir/home.html: No such file or directory.

Here, the customer was trying to PUT the file home.html via FTP. And that resulted in the error.

Now, let’s see the top causes for the error.

1. Incorrect path

Usually, “FTP 550 no such file or directory” error happens when the customers try to upload files from the wrong directory.

For example, when the file is present in the folder /home/user/abc.html, an attempt to upload from the path /home will cause this error.

This error also happens when customer uses the relative path in FTP.

2. Permission problems

Similarly, wrong permission on the files or folders can also cause this 550 error. When the user do not have privileges on the file they are trying to access, it will report the 550 error.

Additionally, a typo in the file name will also lead to this error.

3. Wrong Mount points

Again, we often see FTP 550 errors when users trying to access files in the mounted file systems.

How to fix FTP 550 error?

Till now, we saw the various causes for the FTP 550 error. Let’s now have a look on how to fix it.

We already know that the underlying reason for the FTP 550 error could be file not residing at the path.

We always encourage customers to use the absolute path of the file in FTP connections.

Similarly, we check the server mount points and confirm the availability of file system and its contents too.

1. Wrong Permissions

If you have already done so, make sure to click Fix Permissions from the file manager. Or you can log in to ssh via root, then first find out the user of your website by running:

ls -la /home

This command will tell you the owner of the directory who owns your document root, you can then run following commands to change owners of your document root

chown -R user:user /home/domain.com

Also, this status code occurs when you try to GET a file that does not exist.

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to upload a file to a remote FTP site, a 550 error code is encountered, resulting in an error message similar to one of the following examples:

Example 1:

STATUS:> Transferring file «/pub/yourfile.txt»…

COMMAND:> SIZE yourfile.txt

550 yourfile.txt: No such file.

STATUS:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access).

COMMAND:> CWD /pub/yourfile.txt

550 /pub/yourfile.txt: No such file or folder.

STATUS:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access).

COMMAND:> STOR yourfile.txt

Example 2:

COMMAND:> STOR yourfile.txt

550 Permission Denied.

ERROR:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access).

CAUSE

Example 1:

In this example the 550 code returned by the remote FTP server is for information purposes only. It is not an error and should be ignored by the user. In this case an upload command has already been given but before the upload can be started CuteFTP needs it determine whether or not the file being transferred already exists on the remote site as either a file or a folder.

First, the SIZE command is sent in an attempt to determine if a file with the same name exists on the remote site. The server responds with a 550 indicating that the file does not already exist there.
Next, the CWD command is sent in an attempt to determine if a folder with the same name exists on the remote site. The server responds with a 550 indicating that a folder by that name does not exist.
Finally, the STOR command is given and the file upload begins.

Example 2:

A file upload is being attempted but the remote server has denied the needed permission. The 550 error code is a result of insufficient account privileges on the remote FTP server. The error is not caused by CuteFTP.

RESOLUTION

Example 1:

Not applicable. In this example the 550 code returned by the remote FTP server is for information purposes only. It is not an error and should be ignored by the user.

Example 2:

If you believe that your FTP account privileges or permissions are configured incorrectly, contact the technical support department at the remote FTP site or your Web hosting company for help.

Hi everyone,

I have started using FileZilla and am trying to copy my website files over to a backup. Everything copies except two folders. I am not very familiar with website backups as I am new to this but I’d like to know what I should do about these two folders and what they might be for.

First, there’s a good chance these are not part of your website. Second, they are probably symlinks on the server that are incorrectly presented as files in listings, while they are actually directories.

Bottom line: If you backed up your publim_html, www, htdocs directory it’s OK, you very likely won’t need this.

Your comment helped so I did a little research and figured out they are Godaddy’s log files that are only accessible through their FTP file manager.

So basically I will copy everything under my folder titled «HTML» which contains all the HTML/CSS/Javascript etc. files. It is the same concept as publim_HTML right?

I am at the highest level of the root folder so just making sure.

If it contains all your page (index.html, images etc.) then that should be it. Usually that’s the only directory exposed to the public (it’s called »document root» or »webroot», usually).

Note that websites which are using certain types of scripts (CGI, Perl etc.) might have an additional directory to back up (often called cgi-bin). It doesn’t have to be always there.

In some cases, the firewall or anti-virus software blocks the FTP connection. If this is the cause of the connection error, change the settings of your firewall accordingly or temporarily disable the application.
Some servers restrict passive FTP transfers. By changing the transfer type into active mode, you can allow the connection to the remote server.

FTP errors 10060 and 10061 can also be caused by a timeout. Change the timeout limit in the settings to make sure that the server has enough time to process your command and to send larger files.
