- After being jailbroken for a while, I got my device frozen and then force-restarted it
- When trying to re-jailbreak always getting error -31

Same on 7+ 13.2.2, successful on iPhone x 13.2.2 but error -31 on 7+, not cable related problem

Update: after upgrading to iOS 13.2.3, and running checkr4in from CLI, jailbreak succeeded! The problem is that I got my device frozen afterwards… Rebooted, and now I am facing error -31 again

I have been trying to jailbreak my Ipad pro 10.5 wifi from last last few weeks when it officially get supported by Checkra1n but did not succeed.
Initially I tried rainStorm and then this tutorial on youtube, i thought the problem is with setting up mac os on linux itself but at the end I found it was not the case.
Let’s not waste the time here and get back to steps/ process to fix this error -31.
If you are starting from fresh and does not have mac OS environment setup (for Windows/Linux user) then try this:

Once Mac Os is Setup :

Boot into mac OS

Download latest checknra1n from their official website

Open terminal

and type the command /Applications/checkra1n.app/Contents/MacOS/checkra1n

and hit enter

if you are getting any error running the command simply type /Applications/checkra1n.app/Contents/MacOS/ and then letter ‘c’ and click on tab so that it finds the appropriate file which should be «checkrain+something»

once you enter the command you should see message «Waiting for device to put in DFU mode» something like that in terminal

Keep the terminal as it is and open checkra1n app which you just downloaded and start the process

start the process to boot into recovery mode and then DFU mode
-
At the same time you may see error -31 on terminal (Do not close the terminal)

Once the device is in DFU mode , you may see you device screen with some logs message , Yes you device got jailbroken .

Your checkra1n GUI app may still throw some error though but you can confirm the jailbreak status from the terminal itself.

In that case, keep the terminal open and try to put the device in DFU mode using checkra1n GUI app. It will successfully jailbreak the device

What does error -31 mean?
I think this issue is related to your Macintosh/the usb controller on your Macintosh. Could you provide more information on the model you are using?
I’m using a msg b450i gaming plus ac, with OSX 10.14.6, and no USB kexts.
But unless error -31 refers to USB stuff, I think it’s probably my device. My install of 12.4 is kinda messed up from being jailbroken and restore-roofs’ed a lot of times.
Error -31 here as well, also an amd hackintosh, gigabyte b450m and an iPad 6th gen
Try an USB 2.0 port (or the reverse if you were trying one)

So it’s a USB driver issue for the amd hackintoshes that use the b450 (and b350) chipset (b450m, b450i, etc.) perhaps some special usb drivers are needed?

yes, but I also tried a different port which had something plugged in. could be a piece of the puzzle aswell 😅
I think this is great but it’s not just hackintosh that gets an error code -31
My computer which is a MacOS Catalina running in a late 2013 Mac Pro gets the same issue… my fix for non X devices is to hold the home button and not let go for the first part of the exploit. So instead of stopping at the your Iphone is in dfu mode message, just hold it a little bit longer and it gives a 100% success rate
@boiimakillu likely has to do with what @dhinakg mentioned. ASMedia controllers having proper macOS support, unlike the chipset controller.
Well, I of course got the error-31 on my ryzentosh (b350; 2600). No usbs worked at all. I tried to follow the usb mapping tutorial, but I couldn’t save the ports info file he talks about in the beginning. Just gave an error.
Anyway, I tried doing the checkrain on my roommates macbook pro, and I got further… but still error-31. Tried all 3 ports he had with no success.
iPhone X 12.4 (didn’t want to update if it failed. 12.4 might be the reason).

Wow @BitGrub that’s lucky haha.
Just for context: I tried 10.14.6 (I think. It’s on the supported list) with Clover. My mobo is the ROG Strix B350-F Gaming motherboard. When I would mount my EFI and try to save DSDT with the iregistry stuff in the guide, it would just say «error can’t save» or something along those lines. I tried using USB3.0 and 2.0. I definitely exceed the 15 port limit, though. probably 6 usb3.0/3.1 and 4-6 usb 2.0 (going from memory there). I only tried my front usbs, so maybe using the ones that are actually directly on the IO would be more successful?
I wanted to try going to high sierra, but I couldn’t get it to get past randomseed even when I downgraded clover and put the ryzen patches in. I figured an older osx might have more support since it’s been played with for longer. Also I saw the automated usbmapping command line that I wanted to use, but it said it wasn’t compatible with mojave and newer.

I use the USB hub on my monitor, which is connected to the rear USB 3.1 gen 1 port of my MSI B350M Mortar motherboard
Oh, I also only tried checkra1n 0.9.2 (three successes, no failures), if it matters
I can confirm that the usb 3.1 seems to work better in terms of reliability

I do not confirm. Catalina gives the exact same error «-31». I have an Intel motherboard, so AMD is out of the question.
I’m one of the people who had no issues on their Ryzentosh (see specs above).
I updated from Mojave/Clover to Catalina/OpenCore AND from checkra1n 0.9.2 to 0.9.5, and now I get the error (-31), but the exploit continues and my iPhone still jailbrakes, despite the error popping up midway through the booting proccess (post-DFU mode).
Intel board same -31 error repeatedly. Tried different ports and all of the releases no dice for my 6s+
@foresterfx I have the same motherboard and «fixed» it by using the USB 3.0 ports right next to the LAN port.
Without using USBInjectAll.kext or manually mapping my ports.
If this does not work out for you, I can give you my EFI folder.

Absolutely would like your EFI folder. Currently using my intel laptop (which works fine), but I only have a 128gb m.2 with a 1tb hdd and the mac os installer wouldn’t let me partition it. I’d like to get that space back.

After a lot of trials and errors I finally been able to install checkra1n in my Iphone 6 with hackintosh AMD.
My specs are:
Amd fx 8350
Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3
16 gb ram
500 gb hdd for hackintosh
250 gb ssd for windows 10
4 tb hdd storage
Nvida gtx 970 ti strixx
mac os sierra 10.12.6
Clover
checkra1n 0.9.5
1.- Connect the Iphone on a usb 3.0 and run checkra1n
follow the steps until you put the phone in to dfu mode
and let the program try to install checkra1n, it will fail and show error -31
2.- After that click «no» on the «send error log» and again click on «done»
it will show «connect the phone in normal mode or run the program in cli»
dont reboot the phone it needs to stay in dfu mode.
3.- Close the program and open «terminal»
write this comand: /Applications/checkra1n.app/Contents/MacOS/checkra1n_gui -v
and press enter, its gonna try to install checkra1n again but it will show the error -31
writte «n» and press enter when it shows «send error log» after that you need to unplug the phone of the usb 3.0 and connect it again in a 2.0 usb and magic its going to happen…. !! 
it will continue to install checkra1n in the Iphone.

Do you have any USB related kexts? I couldn’t get it working and don’t even get error code 31 anymore the program just doesn’t progress past “Checking if device is ready”. Tried to follow a USB mapping guide but it seemed like all my ports were mapped already.
I’m on 10.4.6 Mojave Hackintosh.
I don’t know if it is statistically significant, but putting my phone in dfu mode without going into recovery mode first and using a 3.1 port seems to be working better for me

Hackintoshes are not a supported configuration and we recommend switching to the Linux builds.
Confirm that it’s working fine on native Ubuntu setup though usb3. 3200U AMD laptop. usb2 don’t detect iphone in recovery mode. VM Ubuntu and MacOS also don’t work.
