  9. Paste the data.
  10. Select Okay in order to uninstall the program.
  11. Reinstall the software.

Step 3 – Ensure Junk Isn’t Causing Quarkxpress Error 257

Any space that isn’t regularly cleaned out tends to accumulate junk. Your personal computer is no exception. Constant web browsing, installation of applications, and even browser thumbnail caches slow down your device and in the absence of adequate memory, can also trigger a Quarkxpress Error 257 error.

So how do you get around this problem?

  • You can either use the Disk Cleanup Tool that comes baked into your Windows operating system.
  • Or you can use a more specialized hard drive clean up solution that does a thorough job and flushes the most stubborn temporary files from your system.

Both solutions may take several minutes to complete the processing of your system data if you haven’t conducted a clean up in a while.
The browser caches are almost a lost cause because they tend to fill up quite rapidly, thanks to our constantly connected and on the go lifestyle.
Here’s how you can run the Window’s Disk Cleanup Tool, without performance issues or surprises.

  • For Windows XP and Windows 7, the program can be ran from “Start” and from the “Command Prompt”.
    • Click “Start”, go to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, click Disk Cleanup. Next choose the type of files you wish to remove, click OK, followed by “Delete Files”.
    • Open up the Command Prompt, type “c:\windows\cleanmgr.exe /d” for XP and “cleanmgr” for Windows 7. Finish by pressing “Enter”.
  • For Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, the Disk Cleanup Tool can be accessed directly from “Settings”. Click “Control Panel” and then “Administrative Tools”. You can select the drive that you want to run the clean up on. Select the files you want to get rid of and then click “OK” and “Delete Files”.
  • For Windows 10, the process is simplified further. Type Disk Cleanup directly in the search bar and press “Enter”. Choose the drive and then the files that you wish to wipe. Click “OK”, followed by “Delete Files”.

The progressive ease with which the Cleanup Tool can be used points to the growing importance of regularly deleting temporary files and its place in preventing Quarkxpress Error 257.

Warning PRO TIP:
Remember to run the Disk Cleanup as an administrator.

Step 4 – Fix Infections and Eliminate Malware in Your PC

How do you gauge if your system is infected with a malware and virus?

Well, for one, you may find certain applications misbehaving.

And you may also see the occurrence of Error 257.

Infections and malware are the result of:

  • Browsing the Internet using open or unencrypted public Wi-Fi connections
  • Downloading applications from unknown and untrustworthy sources
  • Intentional planting of viruses in your home and office networks

But thankfully, their impact can be contained.

  • Enter “safe mode” by pressing the F8 key repeatedly when your device is restarting. Choose “Safe Mode with Networking” from the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  • Back up all the data in your device to a secure location. This is preferably a storage unit that is not connected to your existing network.
  • Leave program files as is. They are where the infection generally spreads from and may have been compromised.
  • Run a thorough full-system scan or check of an on-demand scanner. If you already have an antivirus or anti-malware program installed, let it do the heavy lifting.
  • Restart your computer once the process has run its course.
  • Lastly, change all your passwords and update your drivers and operating system.

Warning PRO TIP: Are you annoyed by the frequent updates to your antivirus program? Don’t be! These regular updates add new virus signatures to your software database for exponentially better protection.

Step 5 – Return to the Past to Eliminate Error 257

The steps outlined up until this point in the tutorial should have fixed Quarkxpress Error 257 error. But the process of tracking what has caused an error is a series of educated guesses. So in case the situation persists, move to Step 5.

Windows devices give users the ability to travel back in time and restore system settings to an uncorrupted, error free state.
This can be done through the convenient “System Restore” program. The best part of the process is the fact that using System Restore doesn’t affect your personal data. There is no need to take backups of new songs and pictures in your hard drive.

  • Open “Control Panel” and click on “System & Security”.
  • Choose the option “System”.
  • To the left of the modal, click on “System Protection”.
  • The System Properties window should pop-up. You’ll be able to see the option “System Restore”. Click on it.
  • Go with “Recommended restore” for the path of least hassles and surprises.
  • Choose a system restore point (by date) that will guarantee taking your device back to the time when Error 257 hasn’t been triggered yet.
  • Tap “Next” and wrap up by clicking “Finish”.

If you’re using Windows 7 OS, you can reach “System Restore” by following the path Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

Step 6 — Error 257 Caused by Outdated Drivers

Updating a driver is not as common as updating your operating system or an application used to run front-end interface tasks.

Drivers are software snippets in charge of the different hardware units that keep your device functional.

So when you detect an Quarkxpress Error 257 error, updating your drivers may be a good bet. But it is time consuming and shouldn’t be viewed as a quick fix.

Here’s the step-by-step process you can go through to update drivers for Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

  • Check the site of your hardware maker for the latest versions of all the drivers you need. Download and extract them. We strongly advice going with original drivers. In most cases, they are available for free on the vendor website. Installing an incompatible driver causes more problems than it can ever fix.
  • Open “Device Manager” from the Control Panel.
  • Go through the various hardware component groupings and choose the ones you would like to update.
  • On Windows 10 and Windows 8, right-click on the icon of the hardware you would like to update and click “Update Driver”.
  • On Windows 7 and Vista, you right-click the hardware icon, choose “Properties”, navigate to the Driver panel, and then click “Update Driver”.
  • Next you can let your device automatically search for the most compatible drivers, or you can choose to update the drivers from the versions you have on your hard drive. If you have an installer disk, then the latter should be your preferred course of action. The former may often get the driver selection incorrect.
  • You may need to navigate a host of warnings from the Windows OS as you finalize the driver update. These include “Windows can’t verify that the driver is compatible” and “Windows can’t verify the publisher of this driver”. If you know that you have the right one in line, click “Yes”.
  • Restart the system and hopefully the Quarkxpress Error 257 error should have been fixed.

Step 7 – Call the Windows System File Checker into Action

By now the Quarkxpress Error 257 plaguing your device should have been fixed. But if you haven’t resolved the issue yet, you can explore the Windows File Checker option.

With the Windows File Checker, you can audit all the system files your device needs to operate, locate missing ones, and restore them.
Sound familiar? It is almost like “System Restore”, but not quite. The System Restore essentially takes you back in time to a supposedly perfect set up of system files. The File Checker is more exhaustive.

It identifies what is amiss and fills the gaps.

  • First and foremost, open up an elevated command prompt.
  • Next, if you are using Windows 8, 8.1 or 10, enter “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” into the window and press Enter.
  • The process of running the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool may take several minutes.
  • Once it completes, type the following command into the prompt “sfc /scannow”.
  • Your device will now go through all protected files and if it detects an anomaly, it will replace the compromised version with a cached version that resides at %WinDir%\System32\dllcache.

Step 8 – Is your RAM Corrupted? Find Out.

Is it possible? Can the memory sticks of your device trigger Error 257?

It is unlikely – because the RAM chips have no moving parts and consume little power. But at this stage, if all else has failed, diagnosing your RAM may be a good move.

You can use the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to get the job done. Users who are on a Linux or Mac and are experiencing crashes can use memtest86.

  • Open up your device and go straight to the “Control Panel”.
  • Click on “Administrative Tools”.
  • Choose “Windows Memory Diagnostic”.
  • What this built-in option does is it burns an ISO image of your RAM and boots the computer from this image.
  • The process takes a while to complete. Once it is done, the “Status” field at the bottom of the screen populates with the result of the diagnosis. If there are no issues with your RAM/memory, you’ll see “No problems have been detected”.

One drawback of the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool pertains to the number of passes it runs and the RAM segments it checks.

Memtest86 methodically goes over all the segments of your memory – irrespective of whether it is occupied or not.

But the Windows alternative only checks the occupied memory segments and may be ineffective in gauging the cause of the Quarkxpress Error 257 error.

Step 9 – Is your Hard Drive Corrupted? Find Out.

Your RAM or working memory isn’t the only culprit that may precipitate an Quarkxpress Error 257 error. The hard drive of your device also warrants close inspection.

The symptoms of hard drive error and corruption span:

  • Frequent crashes and the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD).
  • Performance issues like excessively slow responses.
  • Errors like Error 257.

Hard drives are definitely robust, but they don’t last forever.

There are three things that you can do to diagnose the health of your permanent memory.

  • It is possible that your device may have a hard time reading your drive. This can be the cause of an Quarkxpress Error 257 error. You should eliminate this possibility by connecting your drive to another device and checking for the recurrence of the issue. If nothing happens, your drive health is okay.
  • Collect S.M.A.R.T data by using the WMIC (Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line) in the command prompt. To do this, simply type “wmic” into the command prompt and press Enter. Next follow it up with “diskdrive get status”. The S.M.A.R.T status reading is a reliable indicator of the longevity of your drive.
  • Fix what’s corrupt. Let’s assume you do find that all isn’t well with your hard drive. Before you invest in an expensive replacement, using Check Disk or chkdsk is worth a shot.
    • Open the command prompt. Make sure you are in Admin mode.
    • Type “chkdsk C: /F /X /R” and press “Enter”. “C” here is the drive letter and “R” recovers data, if possible, from the bad sectors.
    • Allow the system to restart if the prompt shows up.
    • And you should be done.

These steps can lead to the resolution you’re seeking. Otherwise the Quarkxpress Error 257 may appear again. If it does, move to Step 10.

Step 10 – Update Windows OS

Like the software applications you use to render specific tasks on your device, the Operating System also requires periodic updates.
Yes, we’ve all heard the troubling stories.

Devices often develop problems post unfinished updates that do not go through. But these OS updates include important security patches. Not having them applied to your system leaves it vulnerable to viruses and malware.

And may also trigger Error 257.

So here’s how Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 users can check for the latest updates and push them through:

  • Click the “Start” button on the lower left-hand corner of your device.
  • Type “Updates” in the search bar. There should be a “Windows Update” or “Check for Updates” option, based on the OS version you’re using.
  • Click it. The system will let you know if any updates are available.
  • You have the convenience of choosing the components of the update you’d like to push through. Always prioritize the security updates.
  • Click “OK” followed by “Install Updates”.

Step 11 – Refresh the OS to Eliminate Persistent Quarkxpress Error 257 Error

“Windows Refresh” is a lifesaver.

For those of you who are still with us and nothing has worked to eliminate the Error 257, until recently, a fresh install of Windows would have been the only option.

Not anymore.

The Windows Refresh is similar to reinstalling your Windows OS, but without touching your personal data. That’s hours of backup time saved in a jiffy.

Through the Refresh, all your system files become good as new. The only minor annoyance is the fact that any custom apps you’ve installed are gone and the system applications you had uninstalled are back.

Still, it is the best bet as the final step of this process.

  • Enter the “Settings” of your PC and click on “Change Settings”.
  • Click “Update and recovery” and then choose “Recovery”.
  • Select “Keep my files”. This removes apps and settings, but lets your personal files live on.
  • You’ll get some warning messages about the apps that will be uninstalled. If you’ve gone through a recent OS upgrade, the Refresh process makes it so that you can’t go back to your previous OS version – if you should ever feel the need to do it.
  • Click the “Refresh” button.

Are you using an older version of Windows that doesn’t come with the power to “Refresh”?

Maybe it is time to start from scratch.

  • Enter your BIOS set-up.
  • This is where you need to change your computer’s boot order. Make it so that the boot happens not from the existing system files, but from the CD/DVD Drive.
  • Place the original Windows disk in the CD/DVD drive.
  • Turn on or restart the device.
  • Choose where you’d like the system files to be installed.
  • Your PC will restart several times as the process runs its course.

    Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem, either disable the Storage Optimizer «Optimize drives» service or exclude the thin provisioned LUNs from the scheduled task.

    Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the «Applies to» section.

    More information

There’s no need to run Storage Optimizer on thin provisioned LUNs that use an allocation size (also known as slab size) of less than 8 MB. Thin provisioned LUNs that have a smaller slab size manage space more efficiently,
and the benefits of defragmenting them are not as great.

When you run the Storage Optimizer with the Analyze switch at a command prompt or a PowerShell prompt (for example, defrag
    g: /a
or Optimize-Volume -Analyze g –Verbose) on a thin provisioned LUN that’s using a small slab size, the command does not execute, and you receive the following error message:

Neither Slab Consolidation nor Slab Analysis will run if slabs are less than 8 MB.

This is expected behavior because slab consolidation and slab analysis has been disabled on thin provisioned LUNs that have a slab size of less than 8 MB.

Answers

  • Hi,

This issue could be caused if Defragment take operation on SSD. And as we know SSD cannot be defragged.

To check if your SSD has been defragmented, please run following powershell command:

Get-EventLog -LogName Application -Source «microsoft-windows-defrag» | sort timegenerated -desc | fl timegenerated, message

Judging by the drive letter, you can easily see if your SSD drive gets defragmented. The SSD volume below has been correctly re-trimmed first, but then erroneously defragged.

You can try following steps to avoid defragmentation of your SSD:

    Exclude SSD from automatic maintenance

    Open the disk optimizer (dfrgui):

    1.
      Press «Change Settings».
    2.
Press «Choose» and remove checkboxes from SSD volumes.

In addition, I will document it and confirm with product team if it is by design.

    Keep post.

Event ID 257

The volume (C:) was not optimized because an error was encountered:
The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057)

I have Windows 8.1 64 Bit (HDD) and lately I noticed the above event in my Event Viewer. I get every day 3 or 4 of these errors. Anyone found a solution to this ?

  • SFC /SCANNNOW didn’t solve the problem: Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Solutions that I did not try but might work

  1. Basic steps to use diskpart to assign a drive letter to the system
    partition

    1. Open an elevated command prompt.

    2. Type diskpart and press Enter. You leave the standard command prompt and enter the diskpart utility. (Nothing exciting happens,
      don’t worry.)

    3. Type list disk and press Enter to get a listing of the disks on the system. (More accurately, the disks visible to diskpart.) Figure
      out
which disk contains the partition you want to assign a drive letter
      to.

    4. Type select disk X, where X is the applicable disk number.

    5. Type list partition and press Enter to get a listing of recognized partitions on disk X (from step 4). Your desired
      partition will the
listed there. If not, go outside and enjoy nature.

    6. Type select partition Y, where Y is the applicable partition number.

    7. Type assign letter=Z, where Z is the drive letter you wish to assign. Diskpart should reply: DiskPart successfully assigned the
      drive letter or mount point.

Once the system recognizes the drive letter (a reboot may help; as I
mentioned, I did not reboot before the trim worked, but did have to
wait awhile), you should be able to defrag/trim.

    To unassign the drive letter:

    A. Carry out steps 1 — 6 above.

    B. Type remove and press Enter. Diskpart should reply: DiskPart
successfully removed the drive letter or mount point.

    I hope this helps.

  1. I am not entirely sure why it helped, but after I had the same
issue (0x80070057 during defrag, chkdsk reports no errors) reseting
the journal seemed to fix it.

Open an Administrator command prompt and make use of fsutil:

fsutil usn deletejournal /D volume pathname
fsutil usn createjournal m=max-value a=alloc-delta volume pathname

    Eg :
    fsutil usn deletejournal /D C:
    fsutil usn createjournal m=1000 a=100 C:

Maybe it helps someone else as well.

After doing some research, I found out that Microsoft released a Hotfix for this issue.

Symptoms

When you run the Disk Defragmenter (Defrag.exe) utility on a volume on a computer that’s running Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2, the defrag operation fails. Additionally, event ID 257 is logged in the Application log. This event displays a «The parameter is incorrect» error message. In this case, you may be unable to optimize the volume for space efficiency.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows Server 2012 R2

It often results from an ‘unusual’ (such as ^ & or $ ) character in a file or folder names. Therefore, suggest you use the System File Checker

sfc /scannow

Which will take some time to complete.

Solution by
Event Log Doctor

2016-05-31 14:44:40 UTC

Windows runs the defrag.exe utility via the Scheduled Tasks subsystem in an effort perform SSD maintenance and/or defrag drives automatically.

If the defrag.exe cannot defrag a volume, it will log event 257, even if other drives have been processed successfully.

In most cases (especially workstations) this event can be safely ignored and/or excluded from monitoring.

A bug fix appears to be available from Microsoft but does unfortunately not install on most systems.

I have got a strange issue that just begun on january 29th.  I have a server that is getting a defrag error with the following details:

The volume (C:) was not optimized because an error was encountered: Neither Slab Consolidation nor Slab Analysis will run if slabs are less than 8 MB. (0x8900002D)

I have searched google up and down but can’t really understand what exactly this means.  This is a virtual server running on VMware 6.5.  When I go to the defag gui I can see that the hard drives are showing as «Thin Provisioned» but the strange thing is, other vm’s also with thin provision drives are showing in there respective gui as «Hard Disk Drives».  Those machines are not getting this error.  Can someone help me out here?

Event ID 257 Slab Consolidation Not Optimized

Following the installation of a new Veeam One platform on a Windows 2012 R2 server (now migrated to W2019), I encountered an issue with the deduplication and defragmentation of a partition on the HDD. An “Event 257 Slab Consolidation Not Optimized” appeared.

The volume (C:) was not optimized because an error was encountered: Neither Slab Consolidation nor Slab Analysis will run if slabs are less than 8 MB. (0x8900002D)

As a symptom, I found this message on Microsoft Support: “When you run the Disk Defragmenter utility (Defrag.exe) on a volume on a computer running Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2, the defragmentation operation fails. In addition, event ID 257 is recorded in the application log. This event displays an error message “The setting is incorrect.”

Possible cause of Event 257 Defrag Slab Consolidation Not Optimized

There are several possible causes of the problem. But what we do know is that the problem occurs when defragmenting VM files, whether in Hyper-V or Netapp.

  • What is your file system? NTFS, REFS? or Mon?
  • the storage is shared ?
  • Is it a RAID disk? (in my case yes)
  • Are the disks SATA or is there SSD?
  • As a reminder, SSDs don’t really like defragmentation

Using the Defrag.exe program or the ScheduledDefrag task we get this error message Event 257 Slab Consolidation Not Optimized. A first solution is to modify the task.

By default, if we go to the windows task explorer we call %windir%system32defrag.exe -c -h -k -g -$

event ID 257 defrag.exe -c -h -k -g -$

1: How to resolve Event ID 257 Slab Consolidation Not Optimized

As in the previous picture, the first solution is to modify the task in the task scheduler.

  • search for the ScheduledDefrag task in Microsoft –> Windows –> Defrag
  • Right click and select “property”.
  • Go to the “Action” tab
  • Select the action and make it modify
  • Remove the -k
  • Save and run the task

The -k means “Perform section consolidation on specified volumes”. Here are all the options of the defrag.exe application (from microsoft)

/a Perform an analysis on the specified volumes.
/C Perform the operation on all volumes.
/d Perform traditional defragmentation (this is the default). On a tiered volume, however, traditional defragmentation is performed only on the capacity level.
/e Perform the operation on all volumes except those specified.
/g Optimize storage levels on specified volumes.
/h Perform the operation with normal priority (the default value is Low).
/i [n] The level optimization would run for at most n seconds on each volume.
/k Perform section consolidation on the specified volumes.
/l Make a readjustment on the specified volumes.
/m [n] Run the operation on each volume in parallel in the background. At most n threads optimize the storage levels in parallel.
/o Perform the appropriate optimization for each media type.
/t Follows up an operation already in progress on the specified volume.
/U Print the progress of the operation on the screen.
/v Display the detailed output containing fragmentation statistics.
/x Perform a free space consolidation on the specified volumes.

Now, either there are two cases, you have no more error messages and everything is ok, or you get a new error message “The volume (C:) was not optimized because an error was encountered: The operation requested is not supported by the hardware backing the volume (0x8900002A)”. In this case, I invite you to go to solution number 2. This is the most efficient one, thanks to powershell

2 : Powershell Defrag Optimize Volume

If the first solution to defragment and optimize your disk, especially for deduplication, did not work, you can switch to this much more efficient solution.

  • Open a powershell console as administrator
  • enter “Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter C -Defrag -Verbose

Normally, you should have solved your problem. If not, I invite you to leave a comment, I will answer it by trying to reproduce your system error. Also check this post on Microsoft Technet

  • What OS version is this?

Do you have anything in your DDP database? If not, you can try deleting the directory \RemoteInstall\Stores\Drivers.

  • Hi,

Please type the following command to generate general server health information:

    WDSUTIL /get-server /show:all /detailed

This command causes general server health information to be logged in the Application log and in the System log.

Also you need to verify the settings in Windows Deployment Services Registry Entries, there is a link for your reference:

Title: Windows Deployment Services Registry Entries
    URL: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733103(v=ws.10).aspx

Note: Do not change the settings in registry unless you have a backup.

    Regards,
    James

  • OS: Windows Server 2008 R2.

I’ve already try to reinstall with and without the RemoteInstall directory with no success.

WDSUTIL /get-server /show:all /detailed shows me that’s all right except for the service that cannot start

James, these settings for the WDSServer are very interesting, but all the settings in the registry that I have are the same to other WDSServer installations that I manage.

    FYI:

In my AD WDS object (AD Server computer account), the «Remote Installation» tab is missing.

I’ve installed a temporary WDSServer succesfully, but I must solve the issue in the original server.

    Thank you for your support.

Please run the following commands in the command prompt with evaluated rights:

    C:\Windows\system32>wdsutil /uninitialize-server

    C:\Windows\system32>wdsutil /initialize-server
    /reminst:e:\RemoteInstall

Note: e:\RemoteInstall is a path of the WDS. It could be customized based on your scenario.

Then try to start the WDS service in the service.msc. If the issue still remained, please look into the Event Viewer to verify whether the new Events have been recorded, if so, please post back the detailed information here.

  • Hi James,

I’ve already tried it with the same result: The service don’t starts and the same events 769, 513 and 257.
Now I can observe the event 7024 related to the Service Control Manager: «The service WDS closes due the specific error %%-583»

    Regards,

  • I had the same issue, but additionally, before enent 769, there were ESENT event entries too:
«(3652) DDP: Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -501.tadata»

For me the fix was to remove the directory X:\RemoteInstall\Stores\Drivers\Metadata

I’ve just installed WDS, so there were no important data in that folder. It might be different if you have been using WDS already.

If you find my comment helpful or downright solved your problem, mark it as helpful or propose as answer. Thanks. My personal blog: http://ipfone.hu

  • Thanks, i had this same thing. Getting rid of that dir solved it for me!! Now to continue rebuilding….:/

Windows.

Active Directory
