Crank no start Car (F31 330d M Sport — 202k) stopped running during a drive yesterday and threw a Haven’t had a chance to test everything out… son’s birthday today. But has anyone had this issue and was it a simple fix (fuel filter etc) or something more challenging like the HPFP (i really hope not) TIA Attached Images

I had a HPFP failure, which threw codes 247500 and 247600 Rail pressure plausibility control: rail pressure too low. (On a 335d). Expensive fix. __________________ F30 Estoril Blue 335D MSport. |

How did the recovery company get the car onto the truck ? If the engine had stopped running presumably you couldn’t select N for the transmission, in which case the car either has to be raised so that the manual N lever can be operated from underneath the car, or dollies have to be used, or the car has to be crane lifted. __________________ Current : F31 330sD, remapped, Ohlins Road & Track, Millway camber plates, Quaife LSD, Stoptech brakes + Pagid RSL1 pads all round, Weichers front strut brace, Eibach front & rear anti-roll bars, Michelin MP4S. |

You can get it into neutral for towing by pressing the start button then pushing the selector into neutral for 5 secs. It then gives you 15 minutes in neutral. |

In a typical modern Diesel engine the rail pressure is typically >1500 bar when the engine is running. Not sure whether that pressure is retained when the engine isn’t running though. I expect not. __________________ Current : F31 330sD, remapped, Ohlins Road & Track, Millway camber plates, Quaife LSD, Stoptech brakes + Pagid RSL1 pads all round, Weichers front strut brace, Eibach front & rear anti-roll bars, Michelin MP4S. |

leaking injector can also cause low rail pressure. I’d really get it to a specialist who can properly diagnose it — the cost of throwing parts at something like this can add up very quickly |

Ouch, really sorry to hear about this Bubba. How was the car running in the run-up to the failure? Was it missing or smoking at high fuel loads? It looks as though you can get a new HPFP for 730 or a refurb for around half that. Personally if DIY-ing i would just leave the Injectors for now and see how you go — theyre probably over 200 each for new-ones. Not sure if they can be cleaned/refurbed. Having looked through a forum guide (admittedly on the n47 engine), the job doesnt look like too much of a PITA, but for some reason you need to lock the engine at TDC. I assume theres a keyway that needs aligning on the pump/engine. You will probably also need ISTA to run a priming procedure afterward but there could be ways around that. Just dont be too alarmed if it takes 50 attempts to start! Make sure you have a battery charger Happy to get you a TIS guide if you need. |

It was the last post before I put mine up. With the guide you saw, i think the N57N engine needs to be lifted out or the gearbox dropped in order to access it. Basically the same procedure for the timing chain. V annoying |

Please look at the pressure rail sensor first, if it’s Bosch it’s a grey looking switch at the end of the rail, the rail where all the injector pipes go to. You could also try after that a quick injector back leak test by removing all the leak off pipes, that’s the pipes that sit on top of the injectors by carefully removing the metal horse shaped clips and carefully prize upwards the plastic connectors that the flexible pipes are connected too in series. Then remove all electrical connections to the injectors and get someone to push the start button. You must observe if there is a lot of fuel leakage that may cascade out of the pipe connection points. This will quickly see how healthy your injectors are, if you see a lot fuel back leakage then the injectors are worn, either by normal wear or contamination. ( Hopefully you haven’t crossed fuelled?) if you find leakage you would have to question what’s caused this, so rather go to the fuel pump try and remove the fuel filter and empty the contents into a very clean glass coffee jar and let it settle for a couple of hours. After settling get a magnet at the bottom of the jar and swirl and if there is extensive metal breakup it will cling to the magnet exposing your worst fears. Just properly read your post and it seems you had no choice to go down the pump route, at least this info may help others in the future

Car has now had the injectors and pump replaced. Tank and lines cleaned and used a magnet too. Car isn’t running properly though. At heavier acceleration it cuts out completely. A medium heavy foot will generate rail pressure errors too. Even starting the car is a struggle. |

Just cleaned the injector area due to cabin smell and a small pool of water formed around them. Injector is spitting water. Not sure this is right |

Wow I’ve never seen anything like that before… The video sounds like there’s a pressure leak as though one cylinder is leaking — a repeated «Tsst» noise. The only thing I can think of, unfortunately, is a cracked head spraying out pressurized coolant? Were the injector bolts torqued down correctly? |

2014 328D Drivetrain Malfunction with 249300
Hey guys hoping some is familiar with the N47 diesels, girlfriends 14′ 328D died the other day with Drivetrain malfunction. Now that I have the tool to actually check it only code present is 249300 — Rail Pressure too Low.
From searching have gotten mixed feedback on whether this is a supply pump failure or the HPFP failed. Anyone familiar with them that can point me in the right direction?
Apologies for the poor video quality my phone wouldnt focus, but shows the live data stream as the car turns over.
Thanks
-
I would say it could be the HPFP. But we have seen several diesels that have gotten metal debris or shavings in the systems, necessitating the replacement of every single item in the system. But usually those cars set faults for injectors as well. BMW always has us remove the volume control valve from the pump and inspect it for «swarf» as they call it.
I haven’t seen too many diesels with rail pressure too low fault codes. Don’t think I’ve seen it at all really. Dumb question, but she didn’t run out of fuel, did she?
ASE and BMW Master Certified Technician
-
It is showing 2/3 tank. My first suspicion was the supply pump, given her habit of running to very empty before she gets fuel. But after doing some reading it seemed more likely the HPFP.
Is the volume control valve the star bolt right on the middle of the pump?
Thanks!
-
Were any of the last fillups at a lower quality station? Water contamination of the diesel is the #1 reason these fail. 2nd is incorrect filling with gasoline or sometimes adblue/diesel exhaust fluid into the fuel tank.
Insurance can cover the damage from water at a diesel station, but you may also see if the BMW extended HPFP warranty will cover it too.

I can confirm but since we are all working from home she only stops at 1 or 2 stations. Wouldnt rule it out but wouldnt necessarily head down that road either. I fussed at her enough that she quit stopping at random stations.
-
If I recall, there are two T20 torx screws holding the volume control valve. I can’t really picture it at the moment, it’s been awhile since I did one. But BMW always has us remove it and take pics of the screen and the bore it sits in. If you find any particles or contaminants, you’re screwed. Lol. Hope that’s not the case.

Thanks guys, I will check that out. Was going to pull the supply pump and look for contaminants in the tank as well.

Just stating the obvious, but have you tried a new fuel filter? (and possibly cutting open your old filter) For $10, it may be worth a go. I believe BMW recommends changing them every 60k or so.
