If Natural Selection 2 crashes, Natural Selection 2 will not start, Natural Selection 2 not installing, there are no controls in Natural Selection 2, no sound in game, errors happen in Natural Selection 2 – we offer you the most common ways to solve these problems.
Be sure to update your graphics card drivers and other software
Before letting out all of your bad feelings toward development team, do not forget to go to the official website of your graphics card manufacturer and download the latest drivers. There are often specially prepared optimized drivers for specific game. You can also try to install a past versions of the driver if the problem is not solved by installing the current version.
It is important to remember that only the final version of the video card driver must be loaded – try not to use the beta version, since they can have some terrible bugs.
Do not also forget that for good game operation you may need to install the latest version DirectX, which can be found and downloaded from official Microsoft website.
Natural Selection 2 not starting
Many of the problems with games launching happen because of improper installation. Check, if there was any error during installation, try deleting the game and run the installer again, but before install don’t forget to disable antivirus – it may often mistakenly delete files during installation process. It is also important to remember that the path to the folder with a game should contain only Latin characters and numbers.
You also have to check whether there is enough space on the HDD for installation. You can also try to run the game as an administrator in compatibility mode with different versions of Windows.
Natural Selection 2 crashes. Low FPS. Friezes. Hangs
Your first solution to this problem install new drivers for a video card. This action can drastically rise game FPS. Also, check the CPU and memory utilization in the Task Manager (opened by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE). If before starting the game you can see that some process consumes too many resources — turn off the program or simply remove this process from Task Manager.
Next, go to the graphics settings in the game. First – turn off anti-aliasing and try to lower the setting, responsible for post-processing. Many of them consume a lot of resources and switching them off will greatly enhance the performance, and not greatly affect the quality of the picture.
Natural Selection 2 crashes to the desktop
If Natural Selection 2 often crashes to the desktop, try to reduce quality of the graphics. It is possible that your PC just does not have enough performance and the game may not work correctly. Also, it is worth to check out for updates — most of today’s games have the automatic patches installation system on startup if internet connection is available. Check to see whether this option is turned off in the settings and switch it on if necessary.
Black of black screen in the Natural Selection 2
The most common issue with black screen is a problem with your GPU. Check to see if your video card meets the minimum requirements and install the latest drivers. Sometimes a black screen is the result of a lack of CPU performance.
If everything is fine with your hardware and it satisfies the minimum requirements, try to switch to another window (ALT + TAB), and then return to the game screen.
Natural Selection 2 is not installed. Installation hangs
First of all, check that you have enough space on the HDD for installation. Remember that to work properly installer requires the declared volume of space, plus 1-2 GB of additional free space on the system drive. In general, remember this rule – you must always have at least 2 gigabytes of free space on your system drive (usually it’s disk C) for temporary files. Otherwise, the games and the other software may not work correctly or even refuse to start.
Problems with the installation may also be due to the lack of an internet connection or it’s instability. Also, do not forget to stop the antivirus for the time game installation – sometimes it interferes with the correct file copy, or delete files by mistake, mistakenly believing they are viruses.
Saves not working in Natural Selection 2
By analogy with the previous solution, check for free space on HDD — both on where the game is installed, and the system drive. Often your saves are stored in a folder of documents, which is separate from the game itself.
Controls not working in Natural Selection 2
Sometimes the controls in game do not work because of the simultaneous connection of multiple input devices. Try disabling gamepad, or, if for some reason, you have two connected keyboards or mouses, leave only one pair of devices. If your gamepad does not work, remember — the games usually officially support only native Xbox controllers. If your controller is defined in system differently — try using software that emulates the Xbox gamepad (eg, x360ce — step by step manual can be found here).
No sound in Natural Selection 2
Check if the sound works in other programs. Then check to see if the sound is turned off in the settings of the game, and whether there is correct audio playback device selected, which is connected your speakers or headset. After this check volumes in system mixer, it can also be turned off there.
If you are using an external audio card — check for new drivers at the manufacturer’s website.

NS2 was just released on Steam, and a lot of users have reported it working. Hooray!
Unfortunately when I launch the game, nothing happens. I ran ns2_linux32 manually and it reported a bunch of missing lib32 dependencies. So, I installed all of them, and now it just segfaults.

Game removed: AppID 4920 "Natural Selection 2", ProcID 2897i have checked what package contains that, and it’s
pkgfile libgconf-2.so.4
extra/gconfand i do have gconf installed, and the lib is there
whereis libgconf-2.so.4

unfortunately it’s a failure, i can’t makepkg that, it requires lib32-polkit, which requires lib32-pam, which can’t compile (dies with error, and i can’t find any solution) 
so that’s that, i give up, thanks anyway.
edit: i realized that some deps ware compiled like before the dinosaurs walked the earth, so i recompiled all dependencies, now it starts, except maybe some bug, when i start the game after a couple of seconds in-game it runs out of the 4G memory i have and the kernel kills the process, oh well, there is an easy and cheap solution for this, buy another 4G memory

Got a different kind of problem… I already have all dependencies installed, including everything multilib related & lib32-gconf + its dependencies.
But the game segfaults.

EDIT: Screw that, got it working. Ran the ns2_linux binary through gdb, installed every missing dependency on the host side (just to be sure, I don’t trust that Ubuntu-based Steam-Runtime).
Found out that it required OpenGL 3.1 which Mesa 9.2 doesn’t support yet, installed lib32-nvidia-utils for my Optimus setup (Kernel 3.9.9)… everything works now!! Stupid me.

Same here. I get Steam updates every few days it seems, and have STEAM_RUNTIME=1, but the game still threw the libgconf error.

Resurrecting an old thread. Steam runtime seems to have all the required bits now. I can launch the game through the client and get as far as loading the «Optimize» or «Tutorial» map. But then it crashes with errors in the console:

Hi Rob,
I have no trouble launching the game, and i have only 4gig of mem., the game doesn’t start at all or it starts and exits with out of memory when loading a level (if so, then try to lower the resolution and/or the graphics detail — running it with everything on high, i too get out of mem., so i set it to medium and it runs fine — also try to close any other program than you are running, beside steam and ns).

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, turning down graphics quality didn’t fix it for me. I’ve got 12 GB of RAM, although it seems NS2 is 32-bit so it’s not getting all of it.

Кроме того, пробовал с Catalyst 13.6 (по-моему самый стабильный) — все то же самое, только не доходя до compiling shader сразу сегфолтится.
Затем как советуют в http://wiki.unknownworlds.com/ns2/Linux_Guide, снял бэктрейс с помощью gdb и получил это. Как связано Loaded symbols for /usr/lib32/libnss_dns.so.2 0xf7700430 in __kernel_vsyscall () с графикой не представляю.
Что удивительно, это первая из 60 купленных стимовских игр, которая наотрез отказалась запускаться даже после нескольких пинков.
Нвидия не зря в заголовке упомянута, т.к. действительно хочу купить какую-нибудь на 28 нм, чтобы иметь альтернативный взгляд на графику (хотя в целом и с fglrx подавляющее большинство игр сносно работают (ну кроме этой разумеется)). Как известно 7хх — это ребренд предыдущей линейки со сдвигом индекса на 10 и новым флагманом, поэтому она к покупке не рассматривается.
Бюджет не ограничен, но есть принципы, которые не позволяют выбрать устройство избыточное для требуемых задач (один монитор, сглаживаниями не задрачиваю). Поэтому хочу определиться, брать сразу 680 или для всего хватит какой-нибудь 660?
Также возможно смогу делать сравнительные обзоры производительности карт в онтопике а-ля 7970 vs 680.
Hi, im new and recently i have NS2 running normal
For the first game with bot and trainning , game seem fine
But when join multiplayer server >> When ever i played about 15 min , or try to switch to fullscreen /Windowed , or do what ever like Press B evolve egg >> Crash and press OK to exit game «Fatal error»
I have 4gb ram , running Windows7 32bit OS . Tried Verify Game Cache 100% >> Still not working
So just want developers can fix this error on next patch 275 ? I can wait in the mean time ^^ THanks
P/s : My screen hang while this Error happen , Task manager cant even open . But i have change to WindowedFullscreen mode and try connect to a server again
