It was working, then it stopped working and started throwing me a code FF.
I have attempted trying booting without anything plugged in, swapped graphics cards, swapped power supplies, and tried as many different memory configurations as possible.
The lower righthand corner case fan plug-in isn’t working as well.
I’m at an aggravated loss of what to do, I even sent it to MSI for RMA, and the result said it was «swapped». Although maybe I should have marked it to see if it was…
All the CPU lights stay lit up, if that also means anything.
Specs:
Mobo: 990FXA-GD80 v2
PSU: Rosewill 1000W 12V Combined Output 900W (75A)
CPU: AMD FX-8150 w/ Liquid Cooling Kit (newegg)
Memory: 4 x 4 GB DDR3 2133 G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series
GFX: XFX GeForce GTS 250 1GB
Any insight would be much appreciated…

My expertise is with Intel platforms, but FF code is not good on either platform. You had mentioned testing with another PSU, what one? Brand and +12V amps, single rail? The only time ever seeing that FF code is when the CPU was dead or the CPU 8-pin power connector was not fully seated and locked. Try each RAM stick individually in the primary DIMM slot. Have you tried a battery removed, power cord removed CMOS clear?

Do you know what BIOS revision is on it? I would agree with F G to test with 1 memory in primary DIMM slot.

Just tried different and 2 sticks in DIMM1/2.
The sticker has MS-7640 Version 2.2 on the RMA’d mobo.
I just tested another PSU, a corsair GS600 rated 12V@48A. Corner case fan socket was pushing LED power but wasn’t spinning the fan… the CPU/GFX fans were pushing quite a bit more power… the GPU looked like it was on near 80-100%. The case fan however right next to the cpu power socket was also not turning. Maybe that part is just the stage in booting its at?
I haven’t tried any CMOS clears with the RMA’d mobo.
More things I noticed is that it is lit up for «DDR Phase 1».
Thanks for the quick responses.

Clearing CMOS not doing anything via battery removal… I took the mobo and cpu out of the case and tried booting it out of the case with just those two components, no change. Still staying at FF code.

FF is the bios state before CPU initialization so it’s either the CPU, board or PSU.
Try a different CPU if swapping the mainboard and PSU did not do the trick.

I don’t have another AM3 CPU laying around to test with…
The mobo also decided right next to the case fan slot in the upper lefthand corner to light up, spark and blow out during the barebones testing… For The Win.
Is this board having consistent issues? Maybe I’m just looking for it, but I’m seeing quite a few other people with issues with this board.

Well I guess that it for the swapped board. It probably blew a phase.
Could be they swapped you a non-working board or the CPU is taking out boards.
Try testing it on another board to check if it’s still working properly.

I have the same problem with the post on my motherboard, i had a kingwin 850 watt ps but it kept shutting down my system after about 20 minutes, so i grounded the 4 and 5 pin on the ps but wasnt connected to computer, it failed to turn on so i replaced the ps with a thermaltake 850 watt ps, hooked it all up and i started the comp and recieved a ff code on motherboard will not boot.

I forgot to mention that the board does display the 8 phase power lights, all fans on case are working, and that i am in phase 1 for memory, and video card has all fans and power lights on.
Thanks for any help, much appreciated

FF code is not good! but i see 3 possible suspects in your build
1: your CPU may not be supported by the BIOS hence your seeing the FF code so can you get me the serial number of your board so i can see what BIOS it should have on the Chip?
2: the RAM (G Skill Ripjaws) you are using is known to be problematic on MSI motherboards have you tried with a single stick in DIMM slot 2 and do you have any other non G-Skill memory you could try?
3: if the above 2 things are correct for your setup and don’t help them maybe your board is defective!

After completely rebuilding my computer and installing water cooling (check build log in sig) my motherboard will not boot.
CPU: AMD FX-6350

PSU: Coolermaster V1000
All the flashy LEDs light up, and the debug indicator shows FF as the debug code. According to some threads on Toms Hardware, this indicates a problem with the CPU not initializing.
I have gathered the following potential causes of error:
1. 8pin CPU Power cable is wired incorrectly.
2. 24pin MB Cable is wired incorrectly.
3. Damage to CPU when installing waterblock
4. Damage to the motherboard when replacing the thermal compound on the NB/SB chips.
Now, all the components were working perfectly prior to the new build, except the PSU, which is new. I do however consider the possibility of the PSU being bad, quite low, but I’ll have to check with another in any case.
The cable to the motherboard is custom wired, and I checked the pinouts myself. I verified after completing the wiring that all pins matched up with the original wiring using a multimeter to see that every wire on the MB plug led to the corresponding pin on the PSU side, but there could potentially be a problem here.
The CPU power cable is «stock» and was only shortened by me. There is however a possibility that I managed to reverse the pin direction when doing this. My PSU tester revealed no problems with the cable, but I don’t really trust it
The water block on the CPU was tightened using my fingers, but I don’t know if AMD CPUs are easily affected by the tighting of the cooler.
When replacing the thermal compound, I did not encounter any problems, but you never know…
I have tried to boot the system using the original power cables that came with the PSU, but I still get the same error code. This means one of two things. Either there is nothing wrong with my cables, or my cables has already fried the CPU or the motherboard.
Are there any dummy steps I should take before disassembling my build and test it out of the case? Would (obviously) prefer not to do this, as my entire system has to be dismantled to get the motherboard out.

The last time I updated the bios was before vishera so probably not quite, but since the whole system was working absolutely fine up until I changed those settings, I do not think that is the issue.
