FTP servers stop responding after MLSD command

Apparently many sites still use older versions of PureFTPd, with a problem related to the MLSD command. These sites stop responding completely, which makes it impossible to establish a connection with TC 7.55.
An option «always use LIST» would be highly appreciated in a future version! Meanwhile, I’ll have to go back to an earlier one…

Just open FTP connection properties, select Advanced tab and uncheck Use MLSD for directory listings.

Can you give me an example of a public site using such an old version of PureFTPd? You can contact me at support at ghisler dot com if you cannot make it public. I will use it purely for test purposes.

Thanks for responding both so quickly. I overlooked the option to uncheck MLSD, sorry for that. Regarding Ghisler’s request for an example, I met this problem with some of my shared hosting accounts on U.S. based hosting company GoDaddy — not with public sites (yet).

Are you sure that it’s MLSD’s fault? TC uses it only when the ftp server announces (in reply to the FEAT command) that it fully supports MLSD.

Maybe it’s a problem with active vs. passive mode?

I think I have to appologize for the second time… It was indeed the combination of MLSD and the active mode (which works fine with the LIST command). Switching over to passive mode did the trick. Thanks!

I see, so it’s probably a problem with your Internet router/firewall which doesn’t know MLSD and doesn’t allow the ports through…

Bingo! Zonealarm 8.0.298.000 was causing this. The problem with a mostly fine working firewall is that you would almost forget that you’ve got one. I should have shut it down in the first place before blaming PureFTPd.

passive mode problem — can connect via Total Commander but

not with FileZilla client :o WTH? I tried to understand the commands so
http://www.rhinosoft.com/respcode.asp?resp=227&prod=s
I found out that PASV command makes server to send something like this (I see it in the server interface)
227 Entering Passive Mode (95,82,130,77,156,73)
Two last numbers means that server data port on which client should connect is 156*256+73. OK that would fit into the FileZilla server settings I made that it should use port range 40000-40200 for passive mode. But why the client says different message?
response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (95,82,130,77,24,200)
how can it be different? I cannot connect with FileZilla client, but it works with total commander so this should be OK even if I don’t understand it :-]

I want to set my server to use SSL/TLS so clients will have to use something different then Total Commander to connect, but I thought FileZilla client would be able to connect to FileZilla server, but it isn’t :-]

There is one difference between FileZilla and Total Commander that I noticed: FileZilla uses MLSD command and TCMD uses LIST — so that’s why TCMD works?

OH and now it works! I don’t really understand why it worked before with total commander and why is that Response shown in client different then what server actually sends, but I had probably badly set port forwarding on my Asus router
I set port range 40000:40200 and local port 40000:40200, but I should have left the «local port» blank it seems becaus when I did that it works with FileZilla too. Even with SSL :-]

This is the evil work of your router or a firewall sabotaging FTP traffic and remapping ports. Please read Network Configuration, the chapter about malicious firewalls.

This also worked for me!

Just want to let people know how I got this working.

With the MLSD timeout the problem can also be in the router.

I got a new Asus router and I forwarded the ports for passive mode wrong.
I have a qnap NAS and I connect on port 21 on ftp and port xxxxx:xxxxx in passive mode.
In my asus router I set the port forward (virtual server) correctly now and it works again.
My FTP is forwarded correctly on port 21 to my NAS IP, just standart stuff. The problem was the passive ports my NAS wanted to use also.

I did this in my port forward section (Virtual Server is it called in ASUS routers):

Service name: Whateveryoulike

Port Range: The passive ports your device will use (standart 55536:56559 for Qnap)

Local IP: The local IP of the device (something like 192.168.0.xxx)

Local Port: *LEAVE THIS BLANK* <My mistake was I set it to 21

Protocol: Both

Add

Apply

BOOM! We got uplink.

The problem could be something else, but this fixed my timeout and now it all works.

p.s. It is SUPER retarded that you can not register a user with neither Gmail or Hotmail.
Yeah it is the worlds most spamming emails, BUT ALSO THE WORLD BIGGEST FFS =D
If Yahoo was bigger they would be the biggest spammer.

Very bad logic you have there.

Sometimes you need to set it to the first port of the range, 55536 in your case.

Doesn’t change the fact they willfully neglect to at least basically verify their member’s data, allowing mass-creation of accounts used purely for spamming. I guess high user counts sell better, without the spammers the figures would be a lot smaller.

By the way Yahoo! is also banned, for the same reason.

I’ve recently stumbled upon this issue too. I found none of the solutions I found within the first Google searches to be of no use, but luckily found a solution of my own…

In Site Manager change Encryption to «Only use plain FTP», mine were previously «Use explicit FTP over TLS if available».

FYI, the previous fixes I tried were:

  • Firewall configuration on the router — not possible due to work network and found is was only my PC.
  • Change something on Remote server to do with ports — Again, not
possible and was only my PC having the fault.
  • Switching Filezilla from Passive to Active — Didn’t work
  • Using SSH instead — rejected

This issue is caused by firewall blocks passive connection port range where pure-ftp deamon listens

This issue can be resolved by adding passive port range in pro-ftpd.conf file as shown below

PassivePorts 60000 62000

Make sure mentioned passive port range is opened in TCP_IN of firewall allowed incoming ports

There are two solutions to this problem

  1. change transfer mode from default to active

  2. Use SFTP — SSH file transfer Protocol.

Both are done in site manger window. I am using the latest version of FileZilla Client with Windows 10. Changing both of these did NOT solve my problem!

I had same error when I using FileZilla on ubuntu. I get rid of the error by the following steps:
1. on FileZilla, open the top tab «Site Manager» page, on top right, select the «Transfer Settings» tab.
2. On «Transfer Settings» page, there are three Transfer mode:
«Default», «Active», and «Passive». Select «Active».
3. Try to connect again.

Check your ftp config file, there uncomment and allow to use passive ports 30000 thru 35000.

pasv_min_port=30000
pasv_max_port=35000

Also add these ports range to your firewall TCP_IN and TCP_OUT (30000:35000).
