Sorry about my poor English and I apologize in advance for possible mistakes, but I will try to share with you the solution that I got for error FFFFFF15.

Mr Robot, thank you very much for the attention, but I managed to succeed in another way.

HISTORIC

— my HP Envy TS 15 was purchased in 2014, originally with Windows 8;

— in 2017 the free upgrade was made for Windows 10;

— On 11/1/2017, during the execution of Windows Update 1709, there was a lack of electricity during the early morning hours interrupting processing;

— When the computer was rebooted in the morning, the wi-fi, ethernet and bluetooth drivers did not work, besides several failures and stops in running applications, keyboard malfunction and touch screen

RECOVERY OF OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

As I had created a recovery media in 2015, I followed all the instructions and before starting the environment reconstruction procedure I saved all my data on an external hard drive through the HP Recovery Manager itself.

After performing the data backup, I followed the HP Recovery Manager instructions for recovery of the operating environment.

The environment was rebuilt successfully, but returned to the original Windows 8. My first surprise was to note that my original Activation Key no longer worked because Microsoft invalidated the original Windows 8 Key after the free migration to Windows 10.

What did I do then? Damage: I bought a new Windows 10 and installed it with a new Activation Key. After that I finished re-creating my entire environment successfully.

THE PROBLEM — Data backup recovery — Error FFFFFF15:

My problem and major concern occurred when I was performing the restore of the files with my data that had been saved by HP Recovery Manager on an external hard drive.

Every time I tried to run RESTORE.EXE on Windows 10, it started and showed the file transfer and after a few minutes it stopped and showed with the error message FFFFFF15.

I then searched this Forum to try to find the solution and no suggestions that had been written here worked.

In one of my many attempts to restore the backup, I noticed a message I had not seen before: next to the error code FFFFFF15 the message «File in Use» appeared.

It was a .bmp file and, upon searching, I saw that it was part of the Windows / System32 folder. This file stopped RESTORE.EXE from being used.

First I tried to rerun RESTORE.EXE with Windows 10 in safe mode. The problem repeated itself.

Then I started the computer from a bootable pen drive and command line mode. The problem repeated itself.

THE SOLUTION

As the RESTORE.EXE shutdown have happened on Windows 10 files, I looked for some machine with some other version of Windows to test. I decided to test first at home on an old notebook with Windows XP.

It did not work either… as RESTORE.EXE was compiled in 64 bit, it did not work in Windows XP.

Then, I looked for a computer with Windows 7 or 8 to test it one more time.

I got a disabled Windows 7 notebook in the company I work for.

Pure happiness!! RESTORE.EXE worked flawlessly and unzipped all the files on the hard drive of the old computer with Windows 7.

MY CONCLUSIONS

1. Since the backup media was created in Windows 10 using all classes of files available in the HP Recovery Tool (including image files), the images used by the operating system were also copied by the tool.
2. As I was trying to perform the restore after returning to Windows 10, these same files were in use and the tool simply stops, without asking the user anything and without giving the option to proceed anyway.
3. If I had returned data backup even with Windows 8 before I installed Windows 10, it might have worked the first time.
4. HP should improve the data restoration program

MY SUGGESTION TO HP

The RESTORE.EXE program, which is part of HP Recovery Tools, should at least alert the user about replacement of the operating system files in use and allow the user to proceed with the recovery of their own data. It is very serious to lose data that is saved for such a small reason.

I will be very happy if my experience with the FFFFFF15 in RESTORE.EXE error can help at least one person recover their precious data.

I understand you are getting error 0xEFFFFF08 on your PC while performing recovery. 

Don’t worry I’ll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.

The error 0xe0ef000e is usually an indication that Master Boot Record file is corrupted and the recovery discs you are using might have gone corrupted or faulty.

I recommend you to order a new copy of your recovery media for your computer from HP.

Try running system diagnostics on your PC and check if the hardware on your laptop is functioning correctly.

Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC.

Also, try restoring the BIOS to default and reinstall the image using the discs.

1.    Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2.    Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3.    On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4.    Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5.    Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
6.    Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

HP 2000 series laptop model-2d03TU,Preinstalled Windows 8 64 bit.

Hard Disk error showing during system on.

New hard disk installed physically in the laptop.

Ready with 5 sets of recovery dvds.

Inserted 1/5 dvd while booting ..goes ok…automatic asked «insert disk2#» inserted 2/5 ….this way it goes till last step where «reformatting of windows partition of hard disk» and «copying of files required to restore the hard drive» was done.

Last option «Restoring files to the hard drive» was running in disk no:5/5 …progress bar was up to 42%.

Suddenyl error message pop up saying «HP Recovery Manager Failed code=0xEFFFFF08»

With only «OK» option.

whole process was roll back.

I cleaned the all the dvds & the dvd lens with clean tissue paper and follow the process again, but stuck in same steps.

Is this due to media damage (DVDs) or any other issue?

HP allow to create recovery disk only once. so no option to create a fersh one.

No approval for buying new recovery media.

Please help us.
