  • A month or so ago, I upgraded 1803 to 1809 Insider Build on various test computers I have here, and was experiencing a constant issue that would persist no matter what machine was upgraded.  I chalked that up to it being prerelease, and put it on hold
    until 1809 was fully released in VLSC.  Here we are, almost December 2018, 1809 is released, and the issue is still present.   The problem I am experiencing after an in-place upgrade is: First login on fresh boot is fine, can use the computer
    like normal.  If I log out and back in, the desktop never appears, instead I get explorer.exe crashing every 1-5 seconds, in a loop.  It never fully loads.   I was able to get into Event Viewer, and am seeing the following logged every
    second or so:

    I have scoured the Google to try and find anything I could on this, but nothing matches up.   I have disabled every security tool our company uses, and the same still happens.  Any help would be appreciated… thank you.

  • The plot thickens… I had another user try that started working here about the same time I did, and it was broken for him too.   Had another user try that started about a year later, and it’s not broken for that person.   Starting to
    wonder if a funky character or newline got added to the logon script path when our accounts were created, then they fixed that later on, and it didn’t really come to a head until it breaks things in 1809.

    EDIT:  So, I did a side-by-side comparison of attributes between broken and non-broken users after the above returned a dead end, and found that the homeDrive attribute that contains the drive letter to be mapped to the user’s home share, was missing
    a colon (eg: «Z» vs «Z:»). Once adding the colon, the issue was fixed for the user.

  • All, 

    yesterday I stumbled across the same issue on two PCs(win10, one virtualized one laptop, domain joined): After the upgrade explorer.exe kept on crashing and looping after logon.

    As other users were able to logon onto the same machine without problems, I looked at my user profile in the AD and there was still an old logon script on a unreachable destination set.

    After removing that path I could logon again.
