Host hardware power status ошибка

What

One of my ESXi hosts is marked with a critical warning sign that I couldn’t get rid of it. This warning sign in specif is due to a triggered alarm: Host hardware system board status. And the Severity was Critical.

This ESXi host was repurposed out of an old storage system and I knew this warning sign and the message was valid since this server had some issues with the power supply.  However, I dislike seeing any kind of (red) warning signs on my dashboard and not being able to fix it. This one always coming back, no matter if you check it with an Acknowledge or Reset to Green.

First off, the action needs to be taken on the VCSA, not in the ESXi host.

  1. Select Configure under your VCSA. Expand More and select Alarm Definitions.
  2. Search for the Host hardware system board status alarm (or the one you desire to disable) and click on Disable.

  1. Once the alarm is disabled, you will now see your ESXi host (from the left panel) without the red warning sign, and this time, it won’t come back.

During an upgrade of a Cluster to vSphere 4.1 I have noticed the “Host hardware power status” alarm was not being triggered but the Hardware Status showed the sensor is was alerted. I was having this issue with Dell PowerEdge R710 and ESXi 4.1hosts and found this support article:

This is different Hardware and a different version of ESX than the kb artical but the issue is identical.
I resolved this issue by modifying the default alarm, adding new trigger conditions and using the trigger ‘objectName’ Starts with “Power”. I created warning, alert and normal triggers but left the default triggers alone. Once I did this and restored the power and waited 5 mins then triggering the power loss the alarm works.

I assume the default alarm trigger using the argument ‘group’ start with ‘power’ is not working correclty but the trigger ‘objectname’ does. This means it’s possible for other Hardware sensors starting with power to be trigger this alarm but currently there are no such sensors.

To get the firmware version of this system and the model number of the ROMB Battery or CMOS Battery, you need to check on iLO/IMM/iDRAC page of the ESXi host according to your hardware vendor. Collect the required information to troubleshoot it further.

Solution For Host Battery Status

You need to replace the failed battery with the new one and with the help of your data center operation team. Also, it may require to update the firmware of the ESXi and upgrade the ESXi to the latest version.

If this is not a Hardware issue and firmware along with the ESXi version are updated, You need to reset the event log to fix it.

How to reset the event log?

  • Clear the BIOS Hardware Logs by using iLO/IMM/iDRAC.
  • Navigate to ESXi on vSphere Web Client.
  • Under the Monitor tab, Navigate to Hardware Status -> System Event Log -> Reset event log
  • Under the Sensor tab, Click Update and Reset sensors.
  • Restart the ESXi host, if required.

Alternatively, You can use a command-line tool to reset it all. Just follow below steps:

  • Connect to the ESXi host using an SSH session via putty.
  • Run the following command in the ESXi shell:
/etc/init.d/sfcbd-watchdog restart

Again from the vSphere Client, select the ESXi host and click the Hardware Status tab and click Update in the Alerts and Warnings view under the triggered warning.

That will definitely fix the problem with the ESXi host.

Ошибка VMware ESXI

Добрый день уважаемые читатели, продолжаем наше с вами изучение гипервизора VMware ESXI. Прошлый раз мы с вами разобрали причину ошибки «Alarm: Host IPMI System Event Log Status», сегодня же перед нами стоит задача, разобраться во в таком аларме «Status of the other host hardware objects«, появляющимся в VMware vSphere 5.5, оно еще не критическое, но требует вашего внимания, так как имеет несколько разновидностей.

Открыв свой vCenter сервер и просматривая предупреждения, о которых прислал информацию Zabbix сервер, я наткнулся на одном из ESXI хостов на сообщение:

Если дословно перевести данное предупреждение, то в нем вам сообщают, что у вашего оборудования есть проблемы. Для их диагностики переходим в пункт «Hardware». В моем случае на сервере IBM вышел один из дисков, находящихся в RAID 10 массиве.

Так как на данном сервере у меня установлен RAID контроллер LSI M5015, то я буду использовать специальную утилиту управления MSM, чтобы точно определить какой из жестких дисков вышел из строя. Далее вы смело можете собирать логи для IBM (если у вас как и у меня сервера от этого вендора) и отправлять их для заказа замены жесткого диска. У ошибки «Status of the other host hardware objects», могут быть и другие значения, но все они сводятся к проверке вашего оборудования.

Как почистить читаем дальше

Очистить через клиент vCenter нет возможности. Помогла очистка кеша лога через командную строку. Подключаемся через SSH на хост и вводим следующую команду:

~ # localcli hardware ipmi sel clear

После этого все стало хорошо

У VMware есть привычка в практически каждый релиз заложить какую-нибудь граблю. Вот и в vSphere 6.7 Update 3 отличились.

Выражается в виде массовых событий типа error в vCenter Events:

Alarm ‘Host hardware sensor state’ on [hostname] triggered by event [number] ‘Sensor -1 type , Description [device] state assert for . Part Name/Number N/A N/A Manufacturer N/A’.

Функционал вроде бы не нарушен, проявляется на оборудовании разных производителей,  но эти же события имеют тип info в ESXi.

Проблема в том, что данные события переполняют логи vCenter и систем мониторинга.

Участник Reddit пишет:

Our vCenter daily log is usally something like 15-20KB, but it has blown up to 1.7-2.3 GB since the 10-node upgrade.

То есть рост логов в сутки составил всего-то сто тысяч(!) раз.

А что поддержка? Ничего — ещё не признали проблему! Видать, все на VMWorld уехали.

ESXi host has critical error message:

In the Hardware Health section you see:

This is because the System event log is full, this has no impact on the corresponding blade, it’s just that new logs are not being logged because it is full.

To resolve this issue you need to clear the logs in the CIMC for the corresponding blade through the web browser.

How to clear the logs:

  • Within CIMC navigate to the Blade Service Profile
  • On the “General” tab select the “Associated Server” link (Equipment)
  • Now select the tab “SEL Logs”
  • At the right bottom corner click the “Clear” button

Alternatively you can make a policy to avoid this from happening by backing up the log files on a (remote) log file destination after which the logs can be cleared.

This is achieved in the “Equipment” section under “Policies” > “SEL Polices”.
