How to Diagnose and Clear Lay Z Spa Error Codes

Lay-Z-Spa Air Jet Pump

We work with Lay Z Spa Hot Tubs all of the time.  We hire hot tubs to Bourne, Deeping, Peterborough, Sleaford and even Grantham.  When you set up a Lazy Spa tub and hire them out as much as we do, you become a bit of an expert on the Lazy Spa error codes and how to correct them.  We don’t work with the Lay-Z-Spa Hydrojet Pump.  All of our LazySpa Hot Tubs use the Lazy Spa Air Jet System so that is what we will focus on.

AirJet Pump Error Code 01

Sensor or Water Flow Error.  This can happen if the sensor is in the incorrect position.  It can also be a result of an electrical fault.  The simple solution is to disconnect the pump from the mains.  Whilst off, gently hit the side of the pump with the pump in the upright position to reposition the sensor flags.  Don’t bash it!!  Reconnect to the mains and make sure that it is plugged directly into the mains as extension leads often cannot cope with the high draw of the pump and should not be used.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 02

Water Flow Error.  This Lay-Z-Spa pump error is quite common.  It is the result of back pressure on the pump unit because of a restriction in water flow.  Ordinarily it means that the filter is dirty and needs cleaning or replacing.  It can also be caused by excess debris clogging the screens on the tub piping.  These can be removed with large pliers, but extreme care needs to be taken to not damage the tub.  Also they can be reverse flushed by removing the filter, capping the tubes and removing the pump.  Then remove each cap in turn allowing water from the tub to flow out, then recapping and reinstalling the air jet pump.  This error will also come up if you try to run the pump without sufficient water or if you forget to remove the caps from the tubes.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 03

Low Ambient Temperature Error.  The Lazyspa Air Jet Pump is designed to run in temperatures in excess of 4ºC.  If it is too cold, the pump will not operate.  Bring the pump indoors to warm up. This Layzspa error usually occurs when setting up the hot tub in cold weather.  Once you begin running the air jets to inflate the hot tub and lid, the pump will warm up enough to continue to operate.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 04

Pump Overheating.  This lazyspa error code occurs when the pump is running «hot», or thinks that it is running hot.  As a safety precaution, the pump will not operate if the water temperature is over 40ºC or it thinks that it is over this temperature. Disconnect the pump and make sure it’s in the shade and has a chance to cool down.  Also make sure the water is not too hot.  When restarting the pump, we recommend a full Thermal Reset.  You can go through the procedure first before disconnecting the pump as this often solves the problem because «thermal drift» of the thermostat can occur when the pump is in direct sunlight and the reset procedure solves the problem.  Bestway has been kind enough to provide a YouTube video of the procedure.  You can view it here.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 05

Temperature too high error.  Perform an full Thermal Reset.  This error code can also occur when the pump is dirty.  Place the caps on the pipes and remove the pump.  Take a hose and run water through the upper pump pipe so that the water comes out the bottom pipe.  This reverse flushes the pump and cleans out any debris that may be interfering with the correct operation of the pump.  Also, this Bestway error code can occur if the pump is plugged in to an extension lead.  Make sure the Lay-Z-Spa Air Jet pump is plugged directly into the mains.  If none of these work, you will have to contact Bestway as the pump may be faulty.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 06

General Alarm error.  This air jet error code is rare but is usually caused by a problem with the power supply to the pump.  There may have been a dip or spike in the voltage from your suppler or a supply interruption.  Unplug the pump, let is stand for a few minutes and plug it back in and restart.  Also ensure that it is plugged directly into the mains and NOT an extension lead.  If this does not solve the problem, the pump may well be faulty and you will have to contact Bestway.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 07

There is no know cause for this error code.  It can sometimes be cleared by going through the above mentioned procedures.  Ensure the pump is correctly plugged into the mains.  Perform a reverse flush of the pump, a full thermal reset and restart.  If this does not clear the air jet pump error code, then you will have to contact Bestway.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 08

Thermal Reset Error.  Perform a full Thermal Reset.  See the video for details here.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 09

Internal fuse failure error code.   Turn off the pump.  Turn off the switch at the mains socket and remove the plug from the mains.  On the RCD, press reset, test, reset.  Plug the pump back in.  Again press reset, test, reset on the RCD unit.  Make sure you hold your finger over the power button on the pump for at least 10 seconds when restarting the pump.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 10

Not applicable to spa usage

Air Jet Pump Error Code 11

Not applicable to spa usage

Air Jet Pump Error Code 12

Water leakage alarm.  If everything externally is dry and correctly installed, the pump has an internal water leak.  This needs to be handled by Bestway as the pump is faulty and not serviceable by an operator.  Do NOT use the pump.

Air Jet Pump Error Code 13

Internal communication error code.  If you get this error code, the pump has an internal fault and needs to be handled by Bestway.

Air Jet Pump Error Code GCF

Grounding/Earthing fault.  This indicates a problem with you mains supply.  Also can occur if you are using an extension lead.  If you are plugging directly into the mains and get this code, you should get a qualified electrician to ensure your supply is correctly fitted.  If this is confirmed, then there is an internal fault with the pump and you will need to contact Bestway.

We hope that you never encounter any of these error codes on your Bestway Lay-Z-Spa hot tub. Whether you own one or hire a hot tub, this guide will hopefully get you back to enjoying your hot tub in the shortest time possible.

There may be a number of reasons why your heater pump is displaying an error code. The following is a list of error codes, the reason behind them and how they can be solved.

Water Flow Error The stopper caps are still inside the spa. Remove the black stopper caps from the inside of the liner before heating, filtering or running the bubbles on the spa. If you are unsure how to remove them, please refer to the assembly section within the Lay-Z-Spa owners manual.
Filter cartridges are dirty Remove the filter cartridge from the filter housing and check it is clean. Please make sure the new filter is clean and dry before you install it.
Filter housing is restricting flow Remove the filter housing from the liner and check the black membrane inside. These should lie flat inside the housing. If they are ok, continue to run the spa without the filter cartridge attached and see if the error code persists.
Ensure that the debris screens are clear of debris.
Pipes within the liner are kinked or bent. Disconnect the pump and check the pipes inside the liner. You can manipulate these with warm water to return them to the correct shape.
Washers perished inside pump couplings Disconnect the pump from the liner. Check the condition of washers inside the couplings on the pump. We would suggest backwashing the pump to clear any debris. If the washers are perished you can purchase spares from the Lay-Z-Spa website here

Not grounded/earthed correctly An issue with your power supply Remove any extension leads, we do not recommend the pump is run on one of these. Also try the pump in an alternative socket. If the issue persists, please contact us for further advice.

Backwash Procedure

Attach the stopper caps to the inside of the liner and then remove the Lay-Z-Spa pump unit from the liner (you can do this by unscrewing the 3 couplings ‘A, B and C’).

Using a hosepipe, flush water backwards through the pump. Water should go through pipe ‘B’ and come out of pipe ‘C’.

After a few minutes, flush the water in the opposite direction for about 2 minutes (through pipe ‘C’ and out of pipe ‘B’).

If you have a Hydro Jet Lay-Z-Spa, unfortunately, the backwash procedure will be a little tricky. These are not constructed like the other models of the Lay-Z-Spa. please contact us

Is there an GCF error code displaying on your Lay-Z-Spa pump? This is a ground connection failed error code which means there is an issue with the grounding system within your power supply.

Possible causes of this may include:

  • If the spa is plugged into an extension lead
  • If the grounding in the socket being used is incorrect
  • There is a problem with the electric set up in the house * There may be another appliance causing a problem in the circuit

We recommend following these troubleshooting steps to get back in your Lay-Z-Spa in no time.

Step 1 — Try a different socket:

Please follow these steps:

  1. Turn the pump off using the On/Off power button on the pump display. Remove the plug from the socket.
  2. Plug the spa pump in to another socket (preferably inside your home if you have been trying with an outdoor socket)
  3. Switch the pump on and press the reset/test on the cable. Press the power button on the pump display screen.

Step 2 — Check this electrical checklist:

Lay-Z-Spa pumps must be plugged directly into a grounded mains supply. Please see the checklist below:

•            Where is the item plugged into?

•            Is the pump plugged into a single of double socket?

•            Is the pump being used with an extension lead?

•            Are there any other items plugged into the same socket?

•            Is the plug socket outside? If so, is the socket waterproof?

•            How old is the plug socket?

•            Is the plug socket connected directly into the mains or is it a spur?

•            Are there any other household items tripping?

•            When was the last time the socket was tested by an electrician?

Do not use an extension lead as the power supply for the spa pump.

If the following steps provided above, do not resolve the issue please contact our Customer Care team below.

Please note, we may provide a plug tester in order to check the status of the plug socket as part of our investigation.
