Proper error handling is key to building a high quality application and great end user experience. This document describes error types, common scenarios, and recommendations to ensure your application follows best practices.
The Dropbox API uses standard response codes to indicate error types, with JSON or plaintext bodies with detail. While this doc refers to HTTP codes, note that the Dropbox SDKs will tend to represent errors using a Dropbox exception base class and subclasses.
For a summary of error classes and JSON response bodies, refer to the Error section of the http reference docs. This guide provides additional detail on common causes, resolution, and best practices.
400 — Bad Request
A common cause of this is malformed JSON request bodies, or JSON that does not conform to input fields and validation. Neglecting to sanitize input from end users, for example, would result in this.
These errors may also occur from attempting to access an endpoint unavailable to a given app type. For example, a Business application with Team Member Management attempting to use an endpoint requiring Team Auditing permission.
Responses with 400 error code indicate an issue with the request itself, and thus will not be resolved by retrying them.
These errors are due to the bearer token of the associated request being invalid, expired, or lacking sufficient permission to perform the associated API call. These may also be due to temporary suspension, such as an administrator suspending a member within a Dropbox business team.
Note that Dropbox users may revoke API authorizations (as described here) — so this error may suggest the end user unlinking the app in Dropbox (but not uninstalling your app or unlinking through it).
With the exception of suspension, retrying a 401 will not succeed. If your application experiences a 401, it should prompt that user to re-authenticate. For more information, see our OAuth guide.
403 — Forbidden
A 403 indicates that the user or team does not have access to the corresponding call.
This may be due to a change in the users Dropbox plan. Functionality that is specific to paid Dropbox plans can be introspected with the /features/get_values API call.
This may also be due to some classes of pauses and limits on accounts. For example, Dropbox Business accounts may have monthly limits on upload calls — and exceeding them for the month will result in some calls returning 403’s.
A call that results in 403 may succeed on retry, but only after corresponding action on the account. This category of error is more likely (but not guaranteed) to have a user_message to relay.
For apps performing background operations, this error case should not be rapidly re-tried. An exponential backoff — pausing longer after each failure — is recommended.
409 — Conflict (Endpoint Specific Error)
Endpoint specific errors can have a variety of different causes — refer to the specific endpoint’s documentation to see error cases and how to handle them.
One of the more common causes for many of these categories of errors is path_not_found. Remember — users may move and delete content, or change the permissions of shared folder at any time through the Dropbox UI — so be sure to test against this behavior.

429 — Rate Limit (Too Many Requests)
These errors suggest one of two things:
- Your application is making too many API calls in a short period of time, and is experiencing a rate limit from the Dropbox API.
- There are too many simultaneous writes to the same namespace in parallel. This is likely due to multiple threads/instances from your app writing to the same space, but on occasion may be due to user behavior outside your app.
Rate limit responses from the Dropbox API may include a Retry-After header, indicating how long your app should wait (in seconds) before retrying. If a Retry-After header is not returned, your app should pause briefly before retrying, ideally using an exponential backoff.
Seeing high rates of 429’s suggests your app should use batch endpoints and optimize for performance.
500 — Internal Server Error
Internal server errors are undefined errors on the Dropbox side. In general, the causes for 500 errors are expected to be brief. Visit https://status.dropbox.com/ or contact API support if you see this for an extended period of time.
For apps performing background operations, this error case should not be rapidly re-tried — use exponential backoff.
Use SDKs
When possible, use official Dropbox SDK’s when writing your applications. These SDKs all use the same underlying HTTP calls, but provider helper classes for input and error handling. Using these SDKs will help prevent bad requests.
Logging
Track your error rates. While some types of 4xx errors will occasionally occur as users interact with content, very high rates of errors relative to success may signal issues with your application.
All Dropbox API calls (whether successful or 4xx) return an X-Dropbox-Request-Id HTTP header in their responses. Should you need help from Dropbox developer support, referring to this value can help expedite troubleshooting — logging these may help you debug in the future.
Use Prefix Matching on Errors
When programmatically handling 4xx errors, do not use exact string matching on the error_summary field. Prefix matching on error_summary is acceptable, but the summary may contain additional detail appended to the end of the string, making it unsuitable for exact matching.
Test All Error Types
And of course, be sure to test against all of the major error types described above.

Are you facing the error message Dropbox error 403 on your device? I’m sure it must be happening when you try to log in to your Dropbox account. Even though you are inputting the correct credentials, you cannot gain access to your Dropbox account.
Also, as per the reports by some other users, when they try to access the files they already have saved on the cloud storage, they end up seeing the Dropbox error 403. This error is also referred to as the dropbox runtime error.
The possible reasons for Dropbox error 403 can happen due to the memory leak during the app runtime. Also, when cookies are not cleared from the browser cache, then that may cause the error code 403 on dropbox. In some cases, it is also seen that possible Malware presence on the PC can cause you to see the Dropbox error 403 out of nowhere even though there is no issue with the Browser cookies.
1. Close and Re-launch Dropbox
Simply close the Dropbox active session and launch it again. Doing this has often been reported to have fixed Dropbox Error 403.
- Navigate to the Dropbox icon in the menu bar.
- Click on the icon to reveal the Dropbox window.
- Next, click on the avatar of the connected account you are using for Dropbox.
- From the menu, select Quit.
Then to open Dropbox again,

2. Update Dropbox

Normally, if you have installed Dropbox on your PC, then it will timely keep itself updated to the latest build. When you hover the mouse pointer over the Dropbox icon in the quick access tray on the menubar of the Windows desktop, you will see the Dropbox version and a message “Up to Date”.
Otherwise, you can manually update Dropbox by downloading the installer from the Dropbox repository. Just install the dot exe file. Automatically, the latest version of Dropbox will be installed.
3. Reconnect the PC to the internet
Many Dropbox users have often stated that they end up seeing the error 403 message in the file-sharing app due to an unstable internet connection. The solution here is to disconnect and reconnect your PC to the internet.
You may also reset the WiFi router if you know the correct process for that. Otherwise, let your ISP know and take help from their technical team.
You may also enable the flight mode by pressing the Fn and the Flight Mode key on your keyboard. Then after a few seconds, disable the flight mode. Now, access Dropbox and check if you are still seeing Error 403.
4. Clear Cookies of the Web browser
Refresh the cache of the web browser by clearing the browsing data. This will clear out the temporary files and junk files which often lead to various issues in the functions of various apps or websites that require the browser to function.
I am showing the steps for clearing browser cookies for the Chrome browser. For other web browsers, the steps will be similar.
- Open the browser
- Open Settings by clicking on the three-dot menu option.
- Here click on Privacy and Security and open Clear Browsing data.
- Click on Advanced, and set the Time Range to All Time.
- Select the checkboxes Cookies and Other Site Data. Also, tick the one that says “Cached images and files.”
- Then click on Clear Data.
Launch the browser once you are done clearing the browser cache. Then access Dropbox. This troubleshooting is possible when you are accessing dropbox via the web browser.
5. Check for Corrupt System Files on Windows
Often it may be some system file that would have become corrupt due to any faulty program installation or interruption of the software update. That may cause other apps and services to not work properly. To check for corrupt system files,
- Open the command prompt.
- Type the command
sfc /scannow
- Press enter.
Let the service look for corrupt system files on your PC and fix them. Do not interrupt the process in between. Depending upon the file volumes present on your computer, this process of fixing corrupt system files may take some time.
6. Remove the Temporary Files on your PC
Just as we did with the web browser, the same way you should try to clear out the junk files from your PC hard drive. The presence of junk data often consumes memory unnecessarily and affects the functioning of various apps, including the error messages you get on Dropbox.
To remove the temporary files on Windows,
- Press Windows + I to get to the settings of Windows.
- Then click on the System tab on the left-hand panel.
- Navigate to Storage and click on it.
- Scroll to Temporary Files and click on it.
- Select from the various categories of temporary files.
- Click on Remove Files to clear the temporary files.
7. Run a Malware Scan on your PC
Often an app on the PC may not work properly due to the presence of malware on the computer. The same can be the case with you encountering Dropbox Error 403. If you have Windows Defender or any other third-party anti-virus installed on your computer, then upon finding any possible file that may have a virus or any other malware, you will be notified of those. Those files will be blocked as well until you take any action.
Otherwise, you may manually check for malware on your PC. Here are the steps for that.
- Press Windows + S.
- In the search console, type “Virus and Threat Protection”.
- Click Open.
- Then click on Quick Scan.
- You may also opt for a full system scan by clicking on the Scan options.

Dropbox is one of the top cloud storage service providers trusted by millions of people and companies. However, it seems that their website has issues with most browsers and especially with Google Chrome and Firefox. The famous Error (403) stops users to log in to their accounts and manage their files.
The big problem is that when you check your login details, you will find them correct. However, you can’t log in again to your account, and the site keeps getting the forbidden error, every time you want to access it.
These issues happen in Windows 7, or 8, 10, or the latest Windows phones, and mobile phones in general. But, the problem can also happen with iOS and other operating systems.
The problem is your web browser cookie settings or the Dropbox cookies themselves. To solve and fix the problem, you just need to delete the Dropbox cookies from your browser, and you will access your account again, this will work in the majority of cases.
How to delete Dropbox cookies from your browser?
For Google Chrome, click the options menu at the top right corner of your browser, and choose “Settings”, as the next screenshot.
Now, you will get the settings page, and you need to scroll down and click on “Advanced Settings.”
Then, click on “Content Settings” in the privacy section, as in the following screenshot.
You will get a pop-up window with options and a list of settings, just click on “All cookies and site data.”
Now, search for “Dropbox” in the search box, at the top of the pop-up, and delete all the entries that include the word “Dropbox”. Next, save the two windows to apply the changes.
Finally, visit Dropbox again, and you will be able to log in this time. It’s a cookie issue and you need to clear your browser data the next time, or simply, use this method to remove the cookies manually, you will need the same thing every time you get an error.

If you’re using Safari, then, the safest and easiest way is to clear all the website data, including cookies. Finally, close and open the browser again and try to login to your Dropbox account.
As you can see, it’s just a cookie problem that makes people out of their accounts during hours, or even, days, if they never want to clean their browser data. This will not fix all the future problems, but you need to repeat the same step every time you have issues logging in to Dropbox.
They should work on this problem and fix it as soon as possible. People who save important data and backups in their accounts, and need to have access all the time without errors.
