I’m doing a SQL2005 64bit STD Edition install on Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition. The System Configuration Check is giving the following warning:
— ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement (Warning)

ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement
Failed to find the ASP.Net Version Registration with Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).IIS is not installed and I’m not going to install anything that needs IIS. Can I ignore this warning?
Thanks!

That is according to Reporting Services. In SQL Server 2005 it needs IIS to work. If you have IIS installed on your machine, make sure you go with the implementation rules: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934164
If you don´t need the Reporting Services functionality, just ignore the warning, the option will be just grayed out or not offered for installation. Anything else should work like a charm.

IIS Feature Requirement
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation. To install all SQL Server features, install IIS from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through the Control Panel if it is already installed, and then run SQL Server Setup again. For a list of features that depend on IIS, see Features Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online

I have only this warning message during the System Configuration Check:

Does this mean that I can’t install Reporting Services or should I pay no attention to it and continue to install?
I’m running on Windows 64-bit Pro. edition.
Thanks,

Okay thanks Jens.
I was using the download from the SQL Server Express web site, but cancelled before
install and then just downloaded from the Visual Web Developer setup wizard where it gives you the option to install Sql Server Express.
The download and install had no errors.
Have a good day
ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement During Installation
Installation of Microsoft SQL Server on a Windows Server operating system is quite simple. You just need to start the installation process and follow the wizard. Some times it can create problems due to different architectures installed for different services. Same is the problem given in the heading of this post.
You can come across to ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement During Installation error message if you are trying to install a 32bit version of Microsoft SQL Server on a 64bit Version of Operating system.
ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement (Warning)
64-bit ASP.Net is Registered. Required 32-bit ASP.Net to install Microsoft Reporting Services 2005(32-bit)
There is a very simple answer to this question and anyone can guess the solution. The error seems self explanatory as well. Just install a 32bit version of ASP.net on the machine. This will get everything working without any problem.
There is one way that is more easy, more convenient, more fast to do this task. You just need to allow the 32bit ASP.net on the server where you are installing Microsoft SQL Server 32bit version. Solution of this problem is given as under:
Solution!
Go to start menu and go to Run Menu.
Type CMD and right click on Command Prompt to open it in administrator mode.
Copy and paste the under given command and press the enter button
cscript %SystemDrive%inetpubAdminScriptsadsutil.vbs set w3svc/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1
After issuing the above command you just need to restart the setup of Microsoft SQL server. Surely it will work without any problem.
Note!
The instructions provided on windows tech updates are as is! please apply them on development or testing environment before applying on production environment. better safe than sorry.

I recently experience difficulty in configuring Reporting Services on a Windows 2008 Server with SQL Server 2005. I want to share the solution.
Before I get going, I do want to share with you that the systems that this happened on were not standard builds. The only reason I mentioned this is because I’m not certain of the degree that the operating system configuration varies from the standard build.
I should also add that the hardware is 64-bit, Windows 2008 Server is 64-bit, and SQL Server 2005 is 64-bit.
The application group installed Internet Information Services (IIS) version 7 on the Windows 2008 platform (a prerequisite for Reporting Services). I verified that IIS was installed by reviewing the settings in the Internet Information Services Manager.
When installing SQL Server 2005, the option button for installing Reporting Services was grey – indicating that it could not be installed. I also receive the following warning message during the system configuration check of the SQL Server 2005 installation:
Error 1:

ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement
Failed to find the ASP.Net Version Registrations with Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).
To fix the situation so that Reporting Services can be installed:
1. Run Server Manager (Start | Administrative Tools | Server Manager). Click roles, in the left pane. Right click on Web Server (IIS).
1. Insure that all items are selected for Common HTTP Features.
2. Insure that all items are selected for Application Development.
3. Insure that Windows Authentication and Request Filtering are selected for Security.
4. Insure that all items are selected for Management Scripts and Tools. (This step will create the AdminScripts folder in C:inetpubs)
5. If you added any roles / features, click the next button and then the install button to install the roles / features. Reboot the server.
After Error 1 you might also encounter Error 2. If yes, continue with the following.

6. Open a DOS Prompt (Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK).
7. Type the following command to disable the 32-bit mode:
cscript %SYSTEMDRIVE%inetpubadminscriptsadsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 0
8. Determine the latest version of ASP.NET 2.0.XXX installed on your system (look in the C:windowssystem32Microsoft.NETFramework64 folder).
9. Type the following command to uninstall the current version of ASP.NET and install the most recent version of ASP.NET 2.0 and to install the script maps at the IIS root and under:
%SYSTEMROOT%Microsoft.NETFramework64v2.0.xxx (replace x’s with highest version)
aspnet_regiis –ua (uninstalls)
aspnet_regiis –I (installs)
10. Open IIS Manager (Start -> Administrative ->Tools Internet Information services (IIS) Manager). Expand the server on the left pane. Click on Application Pools.
11. On the middle panel, select “Classic .NET AppPool”. On the right pane under Actions click on Set Application Pool Defaults. In Application Pool Defaults window under General click on Enable 32-Bit Applications. Set this option to False.
12. Once again on the middle panel, select “DefaultAppPool”. On the right pane under Actions click on Set Application Pool Defaults. In Application Pool Defaults window under General click on Enable 32-Bit Applications. Set this option to False.
13. Reset IIS from the command prompt (Start>Run>Cmd) by issuing the command: IISRESET
14. Restart the installation of SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.
Error 3:
Even if everything is correctly set. Like me, you will end up at a point where no warning is reported by SQL Server 2005 x64 setup and reporting services grayed out in the selection screen.
15. Follow http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb839480(SQL.90).aspx and make sure everything is set and reboot the box and continue the setup.

Many of you may have come across this error when installing SQL server 2005 on windows 7 x64 bit. The first error screen would be as below.
appendix (1.1)
Once I give you the fixes for the above (appendix 1.1) you will stumble upon the screen below (appendix 1.2)
PART I
Before you install SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, you must enable Microsoft ASP.NET and Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). To enable ASP.NET and IIS, follow these steps:
- In Control Panel, click Programs, and then double-click Programs and Features.
- In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
- Click Turn Windows features on or off.
- In the Windows Features dialog box, expand Internet Information Services, expand Web Management Tools, expand IIS 6 Management Compatibility, and then click to select the following check boxes:
- IIS 6 WMI Compatibility
- IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility
- Expand World Wide Web Services, expand Application Development Features, and then click to select the following check boxes:
- ASP.NET
- ISAPI Extensions
- ISAPI Filters
- Expand Common HTTP Features, and then click to select the following check boxes:
- Default Document
- Directory Browsing
- HTTP Errors
- HTTP Redirection
- Static Content
- Expand Security, and then click to select the Windows Authentication check box.
Note If you do not enable all these features, the Reporting Services option does not appear in the Feature Selection dialog box of the SQL Server Setup program.
After you enable the required features, you must start the World Wide Publishing service if you want to install the default configuration of Reporting Services. Otherwise, the SQL Server Setup program only installs Reporting Services and does not configure Reporting Services.
