New information discovered — see end of message!
Full error message is (window title is Acrobat Distiller):
«Unable to create the temporary folder
Error: 183 — cannot create a file when that file already exists.»
I have no idea what file or what folder it is referring to. This is on an x86 Vista notebook and the message comes up when starting the notebook and also if you manually start Distiller 8. Updating did not help, nor did turning off the UAC, or running Distiller as Administrator. In the latter case, Distiller will open correctly, but the next time you need to use it, it fails. With the UAC turned off, the behavior is for it to show the Distiller window for a fraction of a second and close immediately. I also gave the user full rights to the C:\Program Files\Adobe folder and lower. Made no difference.
Coincidental with this is that the PDFMOfficeAddIn.dll add-in will not enable in Word — when it is checked, and I hit OK, I get the message:
«The connected state of Office Add-Ins registered in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE cannot be changed.»
All of this is going on when logged in as an administrator. I have seen folks post about this issue, but no answers that actually fiux the problem, just suggest what I have already tried. Anyone seen this one?
The user is highly mobile, so I am not going to have a chance to work on her computer again until next week.
NEW INFO
I tried removing and reinstalling as administrator and the problem remains. However while trying to troubleshoot, I discovered some more details.
The message is being thrown when acrotray.exe is started as a process in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Control Set\Run and then tries to run acrodist.exe (which fails, BTW). If I don’t let it run there and run acrotray,exe as administrator, then acrodist.exe runs as a process without an error. Additionally, stopping it from running in the registry, and then starting MS Word, the Acrobat add-in does load and even though there is an error thown, it still creates the PDF! I have other Vista 32 notebooks running various Acrobat versions with no problems.
Another key thing I found out is that Acrobat started throwing the error after an HP Scanjet 8400 and its software were installed. I tried explicitly giving the user (already an administrator) full rights to the Acrobat, HP and Read IRIS directories. Did not help the problem. I have to think that there is some interaction there, but sure don’t know what it is.

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble. As described you are getting the error 183 ‘Cannot create a file when that file already exist’
Please make sure that Windows path \windows\temp has allowed “Users” group or particular user is Full Control.
Also, try to repair the installation form the help menu. Go to Help > Repair Installation and reboot the computer once.

Adobe’s suite of programs is one of the most popular creative tools on the planet covering everything from basic photo editing to advanced visual effects. However, as popular as these programs are, they’re notorious for random crashes and bugs.

Fixing Error 183 for Creative Cloud apps
If you’re facing an issue with Creative Cloud or Creative Cloud desktop app, try the following fixes.
Disable your antivirus program
Invasive third-party antivirus programs often get in the way of other applications, primarily if they’re functioning with admin privileges, as is usually the case with Adobe installers. This is especially true in the case of Segurazo antivirus; a program Adobe recommends you uninstall. Try disabling your antivirus and running the installation again to see if that resolves the issue.
Kill the installation daemon
Killing any active Adobe processes in the background before attempting the reinstall is also a good idea as it prevents any conflicts. Follow these steps.
Step 1: Head over to the Task Manager (or Activity Monitor on macOS), find the CCXProcess process and kill it using the End task button.
Step 2: You should see a folder in the installer error code, head over to this path and delete this folder.
Now try reinstalling the program, and the error should be gone.
Check your hard drive
Problems with your storage drive can also cause the Adobe installer to lose access to the files it needs to run the installation. If that’s the case, run a disk scan to check your drive and take appropriate action.

Fixing error 183 on Adobe XD or Dreamweaver
Follow these steps if you see error 183 when installing Adobe XD or Dreamweaver.
Use an admin account
If you aren’t already, use an account with admin privileges when installing XD of Dreamweaver. As mentioned before, improper permissions can revoke the installer’s access to the files required to complete the process, causing this error in the process.
Repair Visual C++ Runtime
Repairing the Visual C++ Runtime library can fix any corrupt or damaged files triggering the error.
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R to open the Run prompt. Type appwiz.cpl and hit enter.
Step 2: Find the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime (2012 and onwards), select them and click the Change button. Follow along with the instructions to repair the library.
Restart your computer and try running the installer again.
Update the environment variables
Adobe recommends updating the environment variables to fix the installation issues.
Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for environment variables. Click the corresponding search result.
Step 2: In the Advanced tab, click the Environment variables button.
Step 3: Click the New button.
Step 4: Add the following paths to the list if they’re missing.
- %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\
- %SystemRoot%\system32
Restart your computer and try running the installation again.
Correct permissions on CSDKConfigurator.exe
Fixing permissions on Adobe’s configurator can also help resolve the error.
Step 1: Head over C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe XD, right-click on CSDKConfigurator.exe and choose Properties.
Step 2: Under the Security tab, click on Advanced.
Step 3: Click on Change in front of the current Owner.
Step 4: Enter the username of the account you want to make the owner of the file/folder. Use the Check Names button to ensure you’re using the right username. Click OK when done.
Step 5: Make sure you have all the required permissions for the file. If you don’t, use the Edit… button to modify said permissions.
Restart your computer and run the installer again.
Correct permissions on Adobe.CC.XD_9.1.12.3_x64_adky2gkssdxte
Fixing permissions on a hidden folder Adobe uses to run its installers is also recommended as a troubleshooting step.
Step 1: Head over C:\Program Files\WindowsApps, right-click on the Adobe.CC.XD_9.1.12.3_x64_adky2gkssdxte folder and choose Properties.
Step 2: Under the Security tab, click on Advanced.
Step 3: Click on Change in front of the current Owner.
Step 4: Enter the username of the account you want to make the owner of the file/folder. Use the Check Names button to ensure you’re using the correct username. Click OK when done.
Step 5: Make sure you have all the required permissions for the file. If you don’t, use the Edit… button to modify said permissions.
