  • Hi once again, for this one I have been pulling my hair out. I am at wits end. I am attempting to install IE11 onto a Windows 7 SP1 machine. After running Windows Update and applying all available updates I am left with IE11 as my only available update left,
    which always fails with a Code 9C57 error.

    I have seen that this issue does appear to be common but the resolution being a reinstall of Windows which is a bit overkill. 

    I have run the Windows Update Troubleshooter serveral times, I have tried the offline installer as well only for it to say that it needs prerequisite updates to be installed. It then points me to the site to download these updates and they are either not
    applicable to the system or already installed.

    I have run the update troubleshooter once again, it seems that there is one thing that cannot be resolved, but I am unsure if that is the root cause, clicking detailed information does not bring any information regarding the error.

Are you facing Code 9c57 Windows Update Error?

This guide is for you.

Windows Error Code 9c57 generally occurs due to a failure to correctly run one of its normal operations by a system or application component.

Here at Ibmi Media, as part of our Server Management Services, we regularly help our Customers to fix errors which occur during windows updates.

What triggers Windows Error Code 9c57 ?

1. When there is a failure of installation, incorrect or uninstallation of software leaves invalid entries in the Windows registry.

2. May occur as a consequence of a virus or malware attack.

3. Due to improper system shutdown as a result of power failure.

4. Someone accidentally deletes a necessary system file or registry entry.

Methods to resolve Code 9c57 Windows Update Error ?

Following are methods to fix this error:

1. Windows update troubleshooter

To troubleshoot the issue with Windows Updates, we can run the Windows update troubleshooter and then try installing the updates.

2. Troubleshooting a failed installation of Internet Explorer 11

i. We need to ensure that the system meets the minimum system requirements

ii. Check whether prerequisite updates are installed.

iii. After that we need to ensure that the video card driver is compatible.

iv. Finally we need to ensure that the installation of other updates is complete.

If we have ongoing activity, we have to do the following before trying to install Internet Explorer 11:

– If an update installation is in progress, let that installation finish.

– If all updates are installed but a system restart is pending, restart the system.

After that, we can ensure the correct installer version.

And then uninstall Internet Explorer 9 before installing Internet Explorer 11

3. Install the updates one at a time.

Follow the steps:

i. First open Windows updates.

ii. After that click on the option where it says “important updates available”.

iii. And then uncheck all the updates except one and then install it.

iv. Finally, check if we get the error on all the updates or only a few of them.

4. We can run DISM to fix the Windows update error.

To resolve this problem, use the inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool.

Then, install the Windows update or service pack again.

i. Type Command Prompt in the Search box, right-select Command Prompt, and then select Run as administrator.

ii. Type the following command, and then press Enter.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

However, if the Windows Update client is already broken, use a running Windows installation as the repair source, or use a Windows side-by-side folder from a network share or from a removable media, such as the Windows DVD, as the source of the files.

To do this, run the following command instead:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\RepairSource\Windows /LimitAccess

Replace the C:\RepairSource\Windows placeholder with the location of the repair source.

iii. Type the sfc /scannow command and press Enter.

iv. Close the command prompt, and then run Windows Update again.

DISM creates a log file (%windir%/Logs/CBS/CBS.log) that captures any issues that the tool found or fixed.  %windir% is the folder in which Windows is installed.

I’ve got a handful of systems (all Windows 7 Professional) that are getting an error trying to install IE10 (or 11, for that matter) with an error of 9C57.  Everything I’ve been able to find regarding the error code has to do with hybrid graphics systems on laptops, and every one of the problem machines is a desktop.

I’ve run the System Update Readiness Tool and SFC to no avail.  Any ideas?

    Stop the Windows update service

    Delete the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore

    run ccleaner — http:/ Opens a new window/www.piriform.com/ccleaner

    Restart your computer, then try updates again

    No dice.. it took a while to search for the required updates, but it failed again with the same error message. Other updates NOT having to do with IE10 or IE11 have installed without problem — there was just a security update that installed with no issue whatsoever.

    I’d already tried SFC to no avail.

    I downloaded the executable for IE11 (since that’s where we’re going to end up anyway) and when I run it (clean mode and/or safe mode), I get an error message — «Internet Explorer needs an update before installing».  When you click to access the update, it takes you to

    go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=299206

    Which basically tells me about 6 different prerequisite KBs that need to be installed. When I run them, they either say they are already installed or don’t apply to my system.  The KBs in question are 2729094 (already installed), 2731771 (not applicable), 2533623 (na), 2670838 (na), 2786081 (na) and 2834140 (na).

    The mats/windows_update tool didn’t find any problems and thus no fixes were applied — same with the reset update component tool.  I tried the manual version and still nothing.

    **Edit to add** There are no IE9 updates available, no.  There was one when I started this process but it installed with no problem. The 9c57 Error has something to do with IE10/11 specifically, at least as far as I can tell..

    I’ve had the 9C59 error on two of our machines — trust me, I’ve tried a ton of things with no luck.  Somewhere deep in the logs, it’s trying to say something is missing, but the closest I got was some hotfix that wasn’t applicable.  All other updates are working fine on the machines, and it’s all coming from WSUS.

    Uninstalling IE9 didn’t let me jump the gap (doesn’t hurt to try, right?) so I’ve now reinstalled IE9 to try again and (you guessed it!) same 9C57 error.

    There has GOT to be some simple little something that’s hanging this up..

    Sorry for the delay, other projects took lead and I just got back to this last night.

    No, a Windows Repair didn’t fix the situation. I have found one instance that suggested using my install disk to «upgrade» the installed Win7 instance.. thoughts before I try? I have a test system that I could attempt this with..

    I, too, am running into this on a handful of machines.  All are running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.  I’ve searched for hours on Google and tried just about every fix posted.  I really prefer not formatting all of the computers if it can be avoided.  Has anyone found a solution to this that actually works?  Started with IE10 and now is applicable to IE11 as well.  All other updates install just fine.

    Unfortunately that did not work either, but thank you for posting.  When I run sfc after changing administrator/system permissions on those specific font folders:

    sfc completes without error (I forgot to run it prior to changing those permissions, so I’m not sure if it would have completed then or not).

    Also tried the batch file fix from that URL (RebuildIconCache.bat), but it didn’t work either; Still getting Error 9C57 when trying to run either IE update.

    Yeah, I didn’t touch anything and ran SFC and it came back clean, so I’m not sure this is the root of my problem either.  Tom, what kind of PCs are you working with? Mine are all Dell Vostro Desktops — 430s and a 230, to be exact.  I know some of the issues I’ve found online seem to be model-specific, but it seems to lean towards laptops with integrated graphics, not desktops.  I have add-on graphics cards for all of mine and it doesn’t seem to be Nvidia or AMD/ATI specific either, I have some of each that aren’t behaving..

    We are mostly running into this error with Sony Vaio laptops (with integrated graphics).  The one I have next to me for test purposes is Sony Vaio Model: VPC-EV2MGX/BI.  The graphics card is Intel64 Family 6 Model 27 (core i5) and the driver version is 8.15.10.2827.

    There have been about 4-5 other computers across our organization that have had this issue and while most are Sony Vaio, I think we’ve seen it on a few HP laptop models as well.  I agree that we have not run into this on any desktops, but about 95% of our inventory are laptops.

    I also have the same problem on about 30 computers. Manufacture and models differ from dell Fujitsu and HP. in most cases SFC comes back clean. I also tried almost everything above but no result.
