Intel Optane maximizes your computer’s speed by caching and indexing all your most used applications, pictures, music, and other files. This is particularly useful when you’re using an old slow mechanical drive.

Intel Optane gives off the illusion that your hard-drive is reading faster.

  • Quick tip: If you want to quickly fix this issue, you can get a new hard drive. 

The Intel Optane Pinning Service Extension not having access to the iaStorAfsServiceApi.dll is what causes the memory pinning error.

DLL stands for Dynamic Link Library. It contains important information, functions, and code to help processes or programs run smoothly.

After a major Windows update, Windows tries to reinstall all your system devices with drivers that match them the best. As we all know, sometimes this process can get a little wonky.

Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken.
We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is.

There may be a version mismatch or a compatibility issue.

As a result, Windows throws an error and leaves your device half installed.

This means that files and libraries such as the iaStorAfsServiceApi.dll were not copied across correctly when Windows was trying to reinstall the device drivers for the Intel Optane.

1. Repair the Intel Optane Explorer Extension

  1. Run Programs and Features
    The easiest way to do this is to open the run dialog (win + R), type Appwiz.cpl into the open text field, then click on the OK button.
  2. From the list of programs, look for one labeled Intel Optane Pinning Explorer Extensions.
  3. Once you’ve found it, right-click on it, then select Repair from the short context menu.
  4. Once the repair process is complete, restart your computer.

2. Uninstall the Driver

The first solution should have fixed your problem but if it did not, then try this:

  1. Run the Device Management console (Device Manager).
    Once again, the easiest way to do this is by opening a run dialog, typing devmgmt.msc into the text field and then clicking on the OK button.
  2. Scroll through the list of devices, until you find the field labeled Software components and expand it.
  3. Right-click on the Intel Pinning Shell Extensions field and then select Uninstall Device from the context menu.
  4. A dialog should appear. On this dialog, ensure that the Delete the driver software for this device checkbox is ticked and then click on the Uninstall button.
  5. Once the process is complete, restart your computer.

Hey all,

I’ve ran into an issue due to my own stupidity, I’m afraid.

Before I go any further, I should explain how my storage devices are set up.
My system mainly comprises of four disks.

  1. NVMe SSD (boot)

  2. NVMe SSD (games)

  3. SATA SSD (storage)

  4. Intel Optane Memory (accelerates drive #3)

I am aware that accelerating an SSD is probably really ineffective.
I just happened to get the Optane memory for free with my motherboard, and when messing about I came to the conclusion it’d be pretty funny to accelerate my 1 TB Samsung 850 EVO, seeing as I didn’t use any HDDs in my system at the time. So that’s what I did.

Now, today I was doing a routine clean install of Windows 10, which I tend to do every 6 months to a year and I had noticed that there was an MBR partition on drive #2 and #3. I was under the (incorrect) impression that this was where my Windows bootloader was installed and because I wanted my bootloader to be on my primary SSD, I deleted the partitions. No biggie, I thought and I continued on with the installation which went smoothly as per usual.

I suspect that the MBR partition I deleted from disk #3 had something to do with the Optane acceleration I had configured all that time ago, as I was unable to view drive #3 when finally booted into Windows. It is detected in the Intel SSD toolbox but I can’t view it in explorer or Disk Management.

Disks #2 had to be wiped clean regardless, so this wasn’t an issue. However, disk #3 contains most of my back-up data and as a result it would be optimal if I could access the data once again.

I’ve tried downloading Intel Optane Memory application.
I am then greeted with the following error upon launching the application.

Unsupported System Drive Last Partition

The last partition on your system drive cannot be resized, which is required to enable Intel Optane memory. (0xA0010055)

Please ensure the last partition on your system drive is at least 20 MB with 5 MB of continuous free space.

I’m kind of at a loss here, does anyone have any suggestions?
In the worst case scenario, would it be possible to recover the data without rebuilding the partition somehow?

  2. When the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) screen displays, click Advanced and then click the SATA tab under Device.
  3. Change Chipset SATA Mode to Intel RST Premium with Intel Optane System Acceleration.
  4. Press F10 to save changes.
  5. Set the Windows 10 20H2 installer (USB key) on the USB port and restart the computer.
  6. Press F10 consecutively at startup to open the boot menu screen.
  7. Follow the Windows Installation Wizard.
  8. At the Where do you want to install Windows screen, select Drive 0 and click New.
  9. Adjust the storage size to a number with 0 as the last two digits.
    • For example, change 114473 MB to 114400 MB
  10. Click Apply > click OK > click Next for the installation to begin.
    • Follow the instructions on the screen
  11. When the desktop screen appears, open the Disk Management.
  12. Confirm that an unsorted item on the last partition is greater than 5MB.
  13. Download and install the Optane driver.
    • Unzip the file and right-click iaStorAC.inf to install
  14. Restart the computer.
  15. At the Microsoft store, search and install Intel® Optane™ Memory and Storage Management.
  16. Launch the software and enable the Optane Module.

Intel RST works best with 10 and 11 generation CPUs.   Your system as 8th generation from reading the spec.

When your system was built it should have had the correct intel drivers for rapid start technology and configured for use with Optane.  I do not know if HP has a system restore for your configuration.  If they do, then be sure to bring up the BIOS first and make sure that RST is selected and  not  AHCI before re-installing.

Some info but really only for 10 and 11 gen intel is here 

IMHO, Intel’s RST was good for windows 7 but the latest SSD and M.2 make it old technology.  Intel has come up with much larger Optane like 256gb and higher and in the $500 and up range.

My Area-51 had option for Optane but I switched to AHCI and made the M.2 a cache to speed up all my hard drives.

Consider one of the following (select AHCI boot instead of RST and uninstall all RST and Intel management drivers)

1.  Install a 1tb M.2 and boot from it as the new «C» drive.  This assumes you M.2 is 2280 or the price will go way up.

2.  Boot from your existing hard drive then

     Install a cheap but fast 256gb M.2 (or even smaller) and configure Primo Cache to use it to speed up all your hard drives.

Microsoft is working with game developers for «direct store» game speedup.  This is being discussed at the PrimoCache forum and Microsoft has not released technical info to anyone else.  I believe this affects windows 11 only.

    Hey all,

    I’ve ran into an issue due to my own stupidity, I’m afraid.

    Before I go any further, I should explain how my storage devices are set up.
    My system mainly comprises of four disks.

    1. NVMe SSD (boot)

    2. NVMe SSD (games)

    3. SATA SSD (storage)

    4. Intel Optane Memory (accelerates drive #3)

    I am aware that accelerating an SSD is probably really ineffective.
    I just happened to get the Optane memory for free with my motherboard, and when messing about I came to the conclusion it’d be pretty funny to accelerate my 1 TB Samsung 850 EVO, seeing as I didn’t use any HDDs in my system at the time. So that’s what I did.

    Now, today I was doing a routine clean install of Windows 10, which I tend to do every 6 months to a year and I had noticed that there was an MBR partition on drive #2 and #3. I was under the (incorrect) impression that this was where my Windows bootloader was installed and because I wanted my bootloader to be on my primary SSD, I deleted the partitions. No biggie, I thought and I continued on with the installation which went smoothly as per usual.

    I suspect that the MBR partition I deleted from disk #3 had something to do with the Optane acceleration I had configured all that time ago, as I was unable to view drive #3 when finally booted into Windows. It is detected in the Intel SSD toolbox but I can’t view it in explorer or Disk Management.

    Disks #2 had to be wiped clean regardless, so this wasn’t an issue. However, disk #3 contains most of my back-up data and as a result it would be optimal if I could access the data once again.

    I’ve tried downloading Intel Optane Memory application.
    I am then greeted with the following error upon launching the application.

    In the worst case scenario, would it be possible to recover the data without rebuilding the partition somehow?
