You will see that the screen will simply turn blue or the system will completely fail to boot. 

What causes error 0xc0000034?

1. Bad sectors on Hard drive

All the critical system files will not be readable if you have bad sectors on your hard drive.

2. Corrupted Windows installation

Damaged BCD is a possible cause of the 0xc0000034 error. It occurs because your boot-related files are either corrupt, missing, misconfigured and damaged.

If you are a Windows 10 user you will see the following error message on your blue screen:

Recovery. Your PC needs to be repaired.
The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.

1. Run Windows automatic repair

Windows provides an Automatic Repair tool that uses the Windows installation media (DVD, CD or USB drive) to fix the issue in a few steps. Here are some simple steps that you need to follow:

1. Insert the Windows 10 DVD or USB stick and restart your system.
2. Make sure to boot your system using the Windows installation media instead of your hard drive. You need to constantly press the specified key (F8 or F11 key depending upon your system) and choose the correct boot device.
3. You will be navigated through the startup menu, select Next > Repair your computer.
4. On the next screen select Troubleshoot and then click Automatic Repair.
5. You will see a list of operating systems, select the one you currently have. A repairing process will start to check your Windows for problems and fix them.
6. Wait patiently until the end of the process.

If the first solution fails to fix the error, try the next solution.

2. Manually repair the error

This method requires a Windows 10 setup bootable media, so you can fix the error by following these steps.

1. First, plug in Windows 10 DVD or USB stick after starting your PC. The system will prompt you to select your keyboard and language settings.
2. Select the Repair your computer option.
3. On the next screen select Troubleshoot and then click Advanced Options.
4. You will now see a Command Prompt option.  Click on it.
5. As soon as you see a Command Prompt window, enter the following commands and press Enter key after entering each of them.
   • bootrec /fixMBR
   • bootrec /fixBoot
   • bootrec/scanos
   • bootrec /rebuildBCD
6. At this step add the installation to the boot list by typing A and pressing the Enter key.
7. Finally, exit the setup by closing the Command Prompt window and click the Continue button.
8. In the end, you will proceed to the Windows 10 home screen.

As you have finished the entire process the Windows 10 Error Code 0xc0000034 should be fixed and your system should boot normally. If the problem still persists try the next solution.

3. Refresh Your PC

Fix 0xc0000034 in Windows Vista

Fix #1: Is SP1 Installed

If you installed SP1 for Windows 7, follow the instructions from the 0xc0000034 appears after I install Service Pack 1 chapter below.

If you don’t have SP1 installed or haven’t installed it recently, go to Fix #2 below.

Fix #2: Run chkdsk

To run chkdsk on your Windows Vista computer in an attempt to fix this boot error, follow these steps:

1. Reboot your computer with the original Windows Vista installation disc and boot from the disc

   If you don’t have your original Windows Vista installation disc, go to Fix 0xc0000034 with Easy Recovery Essentials

2. Click Repair your computer
3. Click Command Prompt
4. Type this command:

   chkdsk c: /r

   Replace c: with the letter of the drive where your Windows Vista is installed on.
   Press Enter

5. Restart the computer

Fix #3: Run Startup Repair

Follow the same steps from Fix #2: Run chkdsk until you boot into the Windows Vista installation disc:

1. Click Repair your computer
2. Click Startup Repair

Fix #4: Restore

If Startup Repair didn’t work to fix the 0xc0000034 error, you can also try to restore your Windows Vista to a date before the boot error appeared.

Follow the same steps from Fix #2: Run chkdsk until you boot into the Windows Vista installation disc:

1. Click Repair your computer
2. At the System Recovery Options screen, click System Restore

Fix 0xc0000034 in Windows 7

Fix #1: Is SP1 Installed

These steps apply only to Windows 7 systems who recently installed Service Pack 1 (SP1).

If you installed the SP1 for your Windows 7 system, follow the instructions from the 0xc0000034 appears after I install Service Pack 1 chapter below.

If you don’t have SP1 installed or haven’t installed it recently, go to Fix #2 below.

Fix #2: Run bootrec

You can run the bootrec utility to rebuild the BCD:

1. Boot from the Windows 7 DVD
2. Click Repair your computer or press R
3. At the System Recovery Options window, click Command Prompt
4. When Command Prompt loads, type this command:

   bootrec /rebuildbcd

5. Press Enter

Most Windows 7 systems have the System Recovery Options installed which can be accessed without the installation DVD:

1. Restart the computer
2. Press F8. You need to press the F8 key before the Windows 7 logo appears
3. Select Repair Your Computer
4. Press Enter

Fix #3: Startup Repair

If bootrec doesn’t work, you can try to run the Startup Repair utility:

1. Boot from the installation disc (CD or DVD) and click Repair your computer or press R
2. System Recovery Options should now be available
3. Click Startup Repair

Fix 0xc0000034 in Windows 8

Fix #1: Run Automatic Repair

Windows 8/8.1 comes buit-in with the Automatic Repair that will attempt to find and fix various errors that prevents your computer to load. On Windows Vista and 7 it was called Startup Repair.

To run Automatic Repair, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 DVD/USB and reboot your system

   If you don’t have your original Windows 8 installation media, go to Fix 0xc0000034 with Easy Recovery Essentials

2. Boot from the media
3. Click Repair your computer at the Install now screen
4. Select Troubleshoot
5. Select Automatic Repair
6. Follow the wizard instructions to complete the process

Fix #2: Run bootrec

If Automatic Repair didn’t fixed the 0xc0000034 error, try running bootrec to rebuild the BCD:

You need to have the original Windows 8/8.1 install media. If you don’t have it, go to Fix 0xc0000034 Easy Recovery Essentials

1. Restart your computer and boot from the DVD/USB
2. Click Repair your computer
3. Select Troubleshoot and then select Command Prompt
4. Type these commands in Command Prompt:

   bootrec /FixMbr
   bootrec /FixBoot
   bootrec /ScanOs
   bootrec /RebuildBcd

5. Once the last bootrec finished, type:

   exit

6. Press Enter
7. Restart your computer

Fix #3: Refresh

Performing a refresh of your Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 would not affect your personal files. To run the refresh operating, follow these steps:

1. Restart your computer
2. Press the F8 key or the F11 key
3. Click Troubleshoot

Troubleshooting

0xc0000034 appears after I install Service Pack 1

The 0xc0000034 error code can appear on Windows 7 or Server 2008 systems as a black screen error after installing Service Pack (SP1).

The usually error text is:

!! 0xc0000034 !! 142/53007 (_0000000000000000.cdf-ms)

Depending if you can boot into Windows, you have the following options available:

• Restart the computer using the original installation disc
• Run a VBS script from Command Prompt using the original installation disc
• Install the KB 2533552 update
• Reinstall the Windows Service Pack

If you can boot into Windows and the 0xc0000034 error isn’t preventing you from using your computer:

• Install KB 2533552
• Reinstall SP1

If you can’t boot into Windows, follow these 2 fixes:

Fix #1: Restore your computer

1. Restart your computer and press the F8 key to boot into the Advanced Boot Options
2. Select Repair your computer
3. Press Enter
4. Select a language, keyboard and click Next
5. Enter the Administrator password
6. Click OK
7. At the System Recovery Options screen, select System Restore
8. Click Next
9. Browse the available restore points and select the restore point titled as Windows 7 Service Pack 1.If there is no such restore point, select a restore point dated before the date when you installed Service Pack 1.
10. Click Next
11. Click Finish at the Confirm your restore point screen
12. Click Yes
13. Click Restart to restart the computer

Fix #2: Run a VBS script

This method is recommended for advanced users. Go to Fix 0xc0000034 with Easy Recovery Essentials for a quick and easy way to fix this error.

1. Save the following text as Script.vbs on a USB flash drive:

7. Insert the USB flash drive with the Script.vs file
8. Select Command Prompt, at the System Recovery Options screen
9. Navigate to the USB flash drive by typing the letter of the drive:

   F:

   F: is the USB flash drive

10. Then type this command:

    Cscript Script.vbs C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml

    Replace C: with the letter of the drive where your Windows 7 is installed.

11. Press Enter
12. You should see a confirmation message:

    2 POQ nodes removed. Script Completed

13. Type exit
14. Press Enter
15. Restart your computer
